Yamaha FZR 750 R – OW 01 1989

The original principle of a motorcycle is to provide pleasure to any being a little passionate who takes his handlebars. This is true for most machines – it is much more so and certainly goes further when looking at the new FZR 750 R. This Yamaha is not just a sports car; it is above all the prestigious showcase of the manufacturer who did not hesitate to invest it with the best of its technology to make a Superbike motorcycle barely disguised as a road motorcycle. Moreover, its small name – OW 01 - leaves no doubt about its vocation, OW being the name of factory racing machines..

While the name and shape of the FZR-R are very similar in appearance to the standard FZR, the OW 01 really has nothing to do with the lambda version. It starts with a completely new engine, still faithful to Genesis technology (5 valves per cylinder). The adoption of hyper-square dimensions made it possible to install larger valves, to create an engine which was less tall and which took more revs. Titanium connecting rods, lighter crankshaft and pistons with 2 segments reduce the inertia of this engine which can take 13,000 rpm of maximum speed – it causes! The two air intakes on the top of the fairing supply cooler air to a manifold of four 38 mm flat bushels. One of the most interesting peculiarities of this mechanism is that it is equipped with the new EXUP system which arrives for the first time in France. An electronic system analyzes the pressure of the exhaust gases and controls a valve installed in the plenum chamber. This, by releasing more or less gas, regulates the flow and increases the torque at low and mid revs. A particularly efficient system. In standard configuration, the mill outputs 120 hp. The assembly of the parts of the racing kit allows you to almost align yourself in competition because the power then reaches 135 hp. Downright mind-blowing for a 3/4 liter !Yamaha FZR 750 R - OW 01 1989

The box that houses this engine is also a little gem. The chassis is inspired by and directly benefits from the experience gained with the endurance YZF 750. The Deltabox frame, which is also brand new, is made up of 2 aluminum stringers connected to castings. This structure got rid of the lower cradles that we found on the FZR 750 and one of its peculiarities is that the engine contributes to the rigidity of the whole. The beautiful, strong piece of aluminum that is the swingarm is controlled by an Ohlins monoshock that can be adjusted in all directions and in a variety of positions. It is even possible to change the attitude of the bike without touching the settings because you can play on the upper mounting of the shock absorber. You can even intervene on the wheelbase, as the rear wheel can be fixed in several places on the swingarm. Add to that a big 43 mm fork that can be adjusted from anywhere, 320 mm floating discs calmed by 4-piston calipers, 17 “rims equipped with 120 and 170 tires, more than beautiful plastic. … and stop drooling like that!.

Yamaha FZR 750 R - OW 01 1989 If the driving position is well on the front (which is required on this type of machine), it is not as pronounced as on a Honda RC 30, its direct competitor. The pilot is well positioned, just enough to feel the nose gear and ready to react to the potential of the beast. From the start, the Yam is surprisingly sociable. The engine responds very well, the controls are smooth, the bike obvious – the lady knows how to hold herself.
But we’re not going to ask this sprinter to sunbathe. It is only time to make the powder speak. Taïaut! We release the nags who will be happy to maintain the dream that the chassis will only sublimate. Flexible at the bottom, it displays good health at mid-range, which we surely owe to the EXUP system. Once the milestone of 8,000 trs has been crossed, the horde is unleashed and gallantly rushes to the assault of 13,000 trs. The revs are worthy of a sporty 2 stroke so the inertia is low. It sends big, it goes fast – a real rocket.
Irreproachable in behavior, the FZR-R has superb stability in all conditions. She places herself alone in the bends, swallows them without ever rebelling, negotiates the big curves at high speed without moving and spins at more than 2XX km / h without batting an eyelid. The front end is incredibly precise and the damping of a very high quality, front and rear. The result is a certain comfort and a high level of rigor..

Of course, when we are dealing with such a machine, there is inevitably one place where it gets stuck: it is that we go to the cash register. Almost 120,000 balls to own the toy. Outch! Especially since production will be limited; there won’t be something for everyone. Well, it’s clear that this is not cheap. But if you consider that this is one of the most excellent motorcycles there is, bringing together the best of Yamaha, very close to the dream and devilishly bewitching, the price does not really matter anymore..
