Yamaha Niken GT in the driving report

Long distance version of the tricycle

Quadruple fork meets three-cylinder and touring suitability for two: In the form of the Niken GT, Yamaha offers a long-distance version of the three-wheeler, which should prove what it can do in the first test.

The passer-by is perplexed: "Can I drive that with a driver’s license??" Unfortunately no, this is not a three-wheel scooter à la Piaggio MP3 or Yamaha Tricity 125, but a full-fledged 847 cubic three-cylinder motorcycle. First lesson: with every refueling, every break, onlookers flock to the hotel. The built-in safety plus of this exotic three-wheeler is revealed intuitively: Front wheel slide? Oh no. Even on wet tram rails, leaves or manhole covers, one of the two front wheels always ensures sufficient grip. The bike is guided by an exclusive double fork with four golden bars.

Tricycle drives bold, daring and stable

Most of the time, the three-lane vehicle hits some patch in the asphalt. But it doesn’t matter. The hallmarks of the more expensive GT version of the Niken are the luggage rack, higher windshield, comfort seat, two 25 liter semi-soft side cases, heated grips and a main stand. Away quickly good? Well, the great, thousands of times proven triple propellant from MT-09 and tracer also pushes the 276 kilogram (!) Niken GT powerfully. At level two of the three driving modes, the high-torque, easy-revving three-cylinder is directly on the gas, without being suddenly aggressive. When turning up to 10,000 / min, the triple sounds really horny, hissy-roaring.

Tram tracks are not a big problem for the Niken GT.

The Yamaha dances lively and agile over the asphalt parquet. Here comes a cornering artist, the queen of roundabouts! The tricycle drives bold, daring and stable. You don’t notice anything of the complicated kinematics. When the long fear nipples under the footrests take asphalt samples, you’re already on the wrong track. The front handles the road relief in a confident and comfortable manner. Motto: "flying carpet". The more tightly tuned shock absorber passes shocks a little drier. Its spring base can be remotely adjusted using the easily accessible handwheel. Turning is easy. Compared to the standard Niken, the flywheel mass is slightly increased so that nobody has to choke off the trident with the front wheels turned.

Hui in front, ugh in the back?

Oops, the rear of the car suddenly stands sideways in the pouring rain, even before traction control intervenes: the Bridgestone A 41 R rear tire adheres to flooded roads "M." moderate. Front hui, back ugh? Unusual 15-inch front tires prevent other makes of tires. The braking distances are no shorter than with a conventional motorcycle. On the contrary. In addition, the rear wheel sometimes wedges down to zero during emergency braking.

The tricycle is currently offered in three color variants.

The 88 centimeter wide, butted handlebars are ideally at hand. Only its ends should be bent downwards a little less. Unfortunately, the large touring windshield, which is a bit noisy depending on the stature of the driver, is not adjustable. You sit far back as the driver, but also comfortably accommodated. The seat is thick and comfortably padded, its cover is non-slip at the forehead and back. For one passenger, the rear seat cushion turned out to be tightly compact, the knee angle fits passengers up to 1.75 meters. However, the payload of the "Blue whales" off, a meager 182 kilograms.

Heated grips not very convincing

The cruise control is practical. When driving on the highway, the triplet easily consumes seven to over eight liters! The high weight and, above all, the wide, large and rugged frontal area demand immense air resistance on tour. The small 18-liter tank puts a lot of pressure on the operating range: after 175 kilometers of the motorway there is already a reserve. The LED headlights illuminate the road very brightly, and the high beam is sensational. Despite the long arms, the mirrors, which are unusually far below and in front, do not offer ideal consideration. Haptics like the noble, but rather sensitive matt lacquer in terms of care. Two on-board sockets are practical: in the cockpit for the navigation system, in the triangle frame for the pillion’s smartphone. modern times.

Yamaha would like to have 15,999 euros plus additional costs for the Niken GT.

The non-adjustable clutch lever is incomprehensible. The big chunk of chain maintenance is easy to jack up on the main stand. Even at nine degrees Celsius (plus!) The heated grips hardly perform their warm-up function. The frame corner is screwed on for easy repair. The swinging, medium-sized soft cases have waterproof inner pockets. In addition, there are zippers, which are laboriously secured with curtain combination locks at Tedi-Markt. Bumbling through traffic jams is no problem, because the front is wider than the rear.

Conclusion

In 2019, 170 customers in Germany bought a Niken. 45 base dealers offer test drives. Just try it out, driving turns you on. The fully equipped sports tourer, which some motorcyclists do not greet, costs 16,500 euros.
