The way to serenity

847 cc CP3 engine, 115 hp and 87.5 Nm, steered multi-axles, 267 kg full made, € 16,299

Since 2006, the Piaggio MP3 has masterfully imposed the three-wheeler in the urban world. Available in 125, 250, 300, 400 and 500 cm3, the machine has become particularly popular in France. In particular and above all, because it can be driven by any holder of a car license (B). Faced with the Italian monopoly, Yamaha marketed its Tricity 125 in 2014. A powerful and light machine, equipped with a more technically refined front axle. But the brand in tune still had some under the glove ….

Emerged in 2018, the Niken imposes its aesthetics and its improbable front end to the motorcycle sector. Efficient, surprising and even convincing for those who try it, it gives new motorcycling sensations. But some thought that this first version was wrong for lack of success. Its design made it naturally intended for long outings, even for travel. Problem, the Niken was not a road. Extra short windshield, missing suitcase and saddle comfort largely improved for the passenger encumbered its versatility.

A year later, Yamaha revised its copy and offered a GT version of its technological creature. In addition, the Japanese firm was able to convince the A.S.O. and RCS Sports, organizers of the three Great European Cycling Tours (Tour de France, Giro and Vuelta) to make the Niken THE official assistance bike for these events until the end of the 2021 season. of 30 machines linked by radio which survey the Italian race. Thus, 12 Niken GT upstream lead the way, 4 follow for advertising purposes, 4 others carry the inspectors, 2 the signers and 2 again the traffic regulators around the riders. 4 machines mingle with the Giro for live press reports and 2 tri-wheels bring a general radio informant and another for the race. Finally, a Niken GT serves as a parts carrier and the last one, a replacement machine, is on a flatbed truck..

It is therefore by following a stage of the transalpine event, between Lovere and Ponte di Legno, that we take the vintage 2019 GT version of the Yamaha comfort tri-wheel that we had already tried when it was released..

Discovery

The aggressive lines suggest a sportiness specific to the MT range. But nothing new in aesthetics, or mechanics on this variation. However, the bubble now displays a sizeable size. We regret on the other hand that it is still not adjustable…. Although now a little better known to the public, the machine still appeals to the boeotians. It must be said that the two steering arms with double fork impose. And their bluish color with an electric glow reinforces this unusual visual presence. The wide shoulders of the fairing still evoke automotive-style wheel arches. This is because it is necessary to accommodate the parallelogram multi-axle steering technology (LMW: Leaning Multi Wheel). As a reminder, each wheel is equipped with two juxtaposed inverted fork tubes and placed, on the Niken, on the outside in order to maximize the angle grips (up to 45 °).

The long 18-liter aluminum tank precedes much more attractive seating on this GT version, especially for the accompanying. This now has a real saddle, wide and thick, framed by large grab handles. Two 25-liter semi-rigid cases are also fitted to the machine. Too bad, a full face helmet does not fit there. The pilot will benefit from heated grips, adjustable on three power levels. Finally, the central stand is standard.

Dedicated to the Niken, the heavy-section tubular steel frame supports the CP3 CrossPlane unit fitted to the Tracer and MT09, of which it incorporates the major characteristics. This 847 cc (78×59.1 mm), twin ACT, 12-valve three-cylinder is not stingy in sensation. Its injection maps are optimized to best boost the Japanese three-wheeler. With its forged aluminum pistons and connecting rods, it also contains high-end mechanics partially modified for the Niken. It develops 115 hp at 10,000 rpm (84.6 kW) and 8.75 da.Nm at 8,500 revolutions per minute.

To find out in detail the specifics of the front axle and find the technical characteristics of the Niken, go to the dedicated section.

In summary, the three-wheeled vehicle offers, like the MT09 and Tracer, an electronic accelerator (Ride by wire) offering three injection maps (D-Mode). They allow the engine response to be adjusted to driving conditions or the rider’s wishes, while maintaining performance. On the Niken, Yamaha renames these modes. No more letters, but numbers: the 1 gives the liveliest character. The 2 is the "Standard" profile sparing sport and touring, mode 3 reduces the response to opening the throttle.

The Yamaha is also fitted as standard with ABS, an anti-dribble and assisted clutch (A&S), a rapid upshift system (Quick Shift System, QSS) without activating the clutch, a traction control TCS (Traction Control System) with two levels of intervention and deactivatable and a speed regulator. The latter can be operated from 4th and over 50 km / h for long journeys and on motorways. The system is automatically deactivated when braking, clutching or accelerating. In addition, it has a “Resume” button which allows the system to be reset to the previous setting..

If the construction is generally qualitative. However, we note a lot of electrical sheaths which are concentrated at the fork crown and the clutch lever is not adjustable in spacing. Cables appear quite clearly alongside the engine whose casings do not have the elegance of those of the MT09. And we would like covers masking the rear brake hoses and those of the radiator, the spaces between the engine and the frame and the lower engine. Fortunately, the finish of the front axle elements mitigates these few points..

In the saddle

With 820 mm in height, the seat is accessible, even if a driver of 1.70 will barely put his feet on the ground. And what comfort! The saddle difference with the standard model is impressive. Bolted on its plates and not adjustable, that of the pilot is particularly large and long and allows a lot of recoil, ideal for very large.

Compared to their cousins MT09 and Tracer, the Nikens display a different riding position. Handles and seats are noticeably moved back and lower, the footrests also shift backwards. The legs remain reasonably bent and the body tilts, lightly resting on the large aluminum hanger with variable diameter. Its width of 885 mm, which is 35 mm more than that of the Tracer 900, allows even better downforce. On the other hand, the tank still significantly spreads the legs.

Dominating the cockpit, the instrument cluster is a large LCD window with negative display. Under the bargraph tachometer, it groups together the tachometer and gear indicator, the driving mode selected (by push-button on the right), TCS level, clock and fuel gauge. On the left stalk a rocker successively scrolls through two partials, odometer, instantaneous consumption, average, engine and exterior temperature. Everything, without frills, is very readable. Note that the TCS traction control only disconnects when stationary.

We appreciate the presence of a warning control and a brake lever adjustable in spacing. Practical, one of the two 12-volt outlets is next to the dashboard. The other is on the left side of the rider seat.

In the city

And we do not go unnoticed on the handlebars of this machine. The frontal structure is a source of almost metaphysical questions from other users and pedestrians. What reinforce the impression of piloting a futuristic vessel.

The width of the front requires a certain anticipation to circulate in traffic, but no more than at the controls of a maxi-trail. Apart from its size larger than that of a conventional motorcycle, the Niken GT is taken with the same naturalness. No heaviness in this double front end that you would think is unique. The mass balance of the mobile structure and its intuitive operation testify to a perfect mastery of technology.

Lively and ample, the melody of the three-cylinder block is always seductive sportiness. And its availability gives the Yamaha a lot of ease on a daily basis, allowing urban evolutions on the last report at less than 2,000 rpm. Flawlessly docile, she also maneuvers in a rather small space. Its specific geometry naturally facilitates its stability at very low speeds. U-turns are therefore effortless.

This ease of handling is also due to the smoothness and precision of the controls. The pressure to be applied to the assisted clutch lever is minimal and the gears lock precisely. However, in town, the quickshifter seems resistant to work…. Finally, the large mirrors return a clear and effective field. Efficient in the city, the performance of the Niken GT quickly needs to be tested towards the broad horizon.

Motorway and expressways

High screen and suitcases in no way affect the stability of the road. Well camped on its two wheels, the machine spins at 200 km / h without the slightest movement. In fast curves, the feeling of superior security is noticeable. And on the GT version, the handling seems strangely better. You can now let go of the handlebars without making permanent corrections. Unexplained but much nicer.

The new windshield provides much better deflection, both in width and height. My meter eighty-four shelters easily behind the bubble. Only the arms remain a little more exposed. The dimensions of the front provide appreciable protection against bad weather. The lower legs are also more humid, despite the large mudguards. In good weather, the Niken GT now provides imperial comfort.

At the legal motorway, the mechanics turn at 5,300 laps. One or two reports should be entered for dynamic reminders. On tariffed tracks, cruise control will then be welcome. Another solution, to go to the secondary network, the claimed playground of the Japanese maxi tri-wheeler.

Departmental

The pouring rain, stinging the mountain roads where the Giro sneaks, makes it possible to gauge the interest of the double front axle. At the controls, serenity is total as you invest your capital confidence in the grip of the two front wheels. And as during our first test, the effect felt is astonishing: on a motorbike we tilt on the angle, on the Nikens we tilt…. And this movement is clearly perceptible, truly bringing new sensations on a large displacement. The progressiveness of the angle takes part in this feeling of assurance.

The Yamaha Niken GT on a curveThe Yamaha Niken GT on a curve

When the road dries a little, the 45 ° maximum angle is also reached without difficulty. We can then come back hard in a curve, while maintaining a little brake rather late. We then gradually release to let the steering fully tilt, while putting the gas back very early…. The drifts of the rear wheel then allow a new play when one flirts with the limits of the grip on the angle.

Especially since the mechanics are in tune with this ease of neutral and frank cycle part. The CP3 block reveals another side of its personality when the tachometer attacks its second half of the dial. Because the three-cylinder likes to take turns to let its 115 horsepower gallop at will. Certainly, they have more to do with the 267 kilos of the Niken GT. But this engine is full at all speed. The torque available over a wide engine range makes it possible to boost the relaunches on the intermediates, from 5,000 revolutions / min up to its maximum peak at 8,500 revolutions. Power then takes over ideally enough to bombard effectively. If necessary, entering a report lets express the ardor of the three cylinders. Thus, tight pins require switching to 1 to ensure exits from sporty turns. And, playing the shifter, we then increase the speeds on the fly in the roar of the exhaust turbine.

The Niken GT is a great tool in the winding. Well-configured, its adjustable suspensions easily optimize its behavior. In particular to limit mass transfers. Carried out at a good pace, the novelty ensures high-level dynamic behavior. Thus, whatever the state of the asphalt, dirty, wet or degraded, one passes in curves with ease. Without apprehension, but still keeping in mind that the machine is subject to the laws of physics.

Part-cycle

Remarkable frankness and neutrality, the front axle of the Nikens is surprisingly efficient. Coupled with a perfectly rigid frame, the machine combines precision, comfort and permanent pleasure. Remarkably suspended in the GT version, the elements seem to have benefited from an adjustment both at the front and at the rear. Which would also explain a better holding of course.

Braking

Progressive implementation of radial callipers ensures good control of decelerations, leaving the pilot the possibility of modulating his pressure on the lever. With its front discs of smaller dimensions than usual, the three-wheel maxi may be missing a bit in very sporty use. Overweight is also the cause.

Yamaha Niken GT front brakeYamaha Niken GT front brake

The specific geometry of the Niken GT offers unusual stability under braking. On the angle, we feel the steering lock slightly and we compensate for the rear brake to let the steering tilt freely and smooth the trajectories. Well calibrated, the ABS is triggered only wisely and the best suspension adjustment limits mass transfers and therefore rear wheel locks..

Comfort / Duo

The GT variation clearly resolves the sticking points of the first version. Saddlery and equipment are progressing widely and the passenger is finally celebrating. Strange, however, not to have provided larger suitcases. Optional top boxes will increase your carrying capacity.

Consumption

On our varied route, the Niken GT consumed 6.5 liters per 100 km, in mixed driving. An appreciable value for a machine weighing 267 kilos with a strong character.

Conclusion

In its GT version, the Yamaha Niken takes a good step towards its destiny as a traveler. More homogeneous in dynamics and more comfortable in every way, better equipped, the three-wheel maxi seduces over the kilometers.

Its watchwords remain grip, stability and efficiency, the basis of the path to serenity according to Japanese tuning forks. The additional support and guidance provided by the two front wheels are a real plus at all times, without compromising agility. This point is undoubtedly fundamental for many motorcyclists who ride without any real confidence in the grip of their front wheel. A feeling that generates stress and frustration; this is often one of the causes of stopping motorcycling. They will find or rediscover the pleasure of evolving in all serenity, at any time. Maybe even having access to sensations they had never had on a two-wheeler.

Priced at 16,299 € (1,200 € more than the standard version), the Niken GT offers you medium-haul Zen. In the meantime, again, larger suitcases to extend the distances…. Undoubtedly to test to incline towards new horizons with confidence. And that’s good, Yamaha is organizing tests in all these dealerships at the moment.

  1. In the MAINTENANCE section, it is stated that SP 95 and SP 98 are not recommended. In fact, no, the Japanese women of the 70s already accepted unleaded for the US market and therefore also for Europe. The GS750 was the first model at the end of 1976 with spoke rims, and it was because the engine was unbreakable that in the following years there was the GR850 and then the GS1000 on the same basis.
