Yamaha XVS 1300 A MIDNIGHT STAR 2012

A page turns, a generation disappears, a new era dawns for Yamaha customs. The Dragstar family is slowly slipping away to make way for this new family with a warm and deep name: the Midnight Star. The imposing XV 1900 built the first foundations and is now supported by the more accessible but equally interesting XVS 1300 Midnight Star.

New generation, new engine. The 1300 skips the traditional air motorization – Its twin is a water-cooled 4 valves per cylinder with variable injection and ignition. The forged pistons stir in cylinders with super-square ribs. A mill delivering its 73 horsepower muscle at 5500 rpm, assisted by almost 11 mkg of torque at 4000 rpm.
As with the 1900, Yam held filtered vibrations and used the same type of double balance wheel as on the big Midnight Star. Each balance is placed on either side of the crankshaft, a guarantee of compactness. The XVS 1300’s engine is also fitted with rolling rockers to control its valves – this is the manufacturer’s second model to be equipped with this technology (the XT 660 was the investigator). This system would allow better engine performance at low speeds as well as a “greater feeling of pulsation”..
Concerned about the mechanical look, the engineers endeavored to hide the elements of the liquid cooling as well as possible. Thus, with this concealment work and its fins, the 60 ° twin plays the card of modernity in a stylish old-fashioned outfit..
According to the manufacturer, “the muffler has been developed to produce a low-pitched tone which perfectly complements the character of this motorcycle”. It is true that Yam had distinguished itself with the original sound of the last generation of R1; but with current noise standards, Euro 3 pollution, and other castrato hacks, it will be necessary to rely more on the character of the twin than on its vocalizations. To be checked during a road test.

New double cradle frame using the engine as a stiffening element, shock absorber hidden under the frame, triple brake disc 298 mm in diameter … the technical argumentation is not lacking but it is on its plastic “Streamline” that the spectators will cast their glances. Its refined lighthouse optic invites you to discover a machine that takes up the elegant aesthetic canons unveiled by the 1900 Midnight Star. Mounted on the handlebars, the dashboard in the soft light provides you with the essentials without the hassle of a tachometer (not really useful on this kind of machines).

The drag stars have lived – the Midnights are taking up the torch. After its offensive on the sports niche (new R6, R1 SP), big hairy roadsters (MT-01, FZ1) and that of finally fun and offbeat (250 Tricker, MT-03), yamaha positions on the chessboard a new generation of customs with a beautiful appearance. In 2011, Yam introduced its U.B.S (Unified Brake System) brake system on the 1300 Midnight Star (as well as on the 1900). This system improves braking by simultaneous braking force on both wheels, front and rear, when the driver applies the rear brake.
