Yamaha 300 YZF-R3 2016

YZF-R3! A new R never goes unnoticed in the biker galaxy. Sport at Yamaha is no laughing matter. Since the R1 and R6, it’s radical, adrenaline infusion, without compromise. With the R7, we switched to pure Superbike. Then the time came for the 1 / 8th liter people to know the style with the YZF-R 125. Something to satisfy all appetites.
Well almost. From the 125 driven by 15 ponies to the pistarde R6 at the cleat with nearly 130 units in the boiler, there is a hell of a chasm. Up to R3! Finally a provocative sportswoman, accessible but not radical; with just a few watts.

Those who follow the news from Asia will have a taste of dejà vu. And for good reason: it takes up the design of the R25, sporty 2 and a half intended for emerging countries. Never mind … this YZF-R3 does indeed have the genes of the R family. It is inspired, tense, almost nervous, endowed with a rewarding design and a salient personality. Not even started that it smells of wriggling shark. A sportswoman is not just horses and lap times; it is this desire that it provokes. This sassy little girl really makes you want to be interested in her.

R3 for 3 cylinders?!? No, for its level of displacement. By landing after the others (Honda CBR 300, Kawasaki 300 Ninja and KTM RC 390, this machine must offer the answer. Yam gives it a big 300; 321 cm3 to be precise. Very super-square with odds of 68 by 44.1 mm, the new twin-cylinder spits out a nice 42 horsepower at 10,750 rpm. Side torque, not enough to tear off but a correct value of 3 mkg at 9,000 rpm. Question figures, its watts allow it to tease the KTM (44 hp), provoke the Kawa (39 hp) and outright smoke the Honda (30 hp). If the latter ever arrives in France…
Average YZF does not mean average technology. We find a good part of Yam engineering in this mill: injection, double ACT, multivalves, forged pistons, case-hardened connecting rods, Diasil cylinder (Yam technology integrating 20% of silicone in the aluminum), presence of only one pusher and one pellet between each cam and valve, balancing arm and cylinder offset as in the MT-07 and MT-09 engines.
Let’s make it simpler: the R3 will give you three times more potato than the YZF-R 125 with only 29 kilos more to carry. Yam announces it at 169 kilos all wet.

That’s almost the weight of the R6 dry. But the R3 will not offer you as many refinements as the tracker at the chassis level. Okay, you don’t need a chassis worthy of a SuperSport commitment, either. A more classic as well as proven design will do just fine. 35 mm steel tubes are welded according to a traditional diamond-type pattern. To flatter the owner, some technical comparisons are put forward by Yamaha. Like the choice of a long 573mm swingarm, allowing the R3 chassis to benefit from the same swingarm-to-wheelbase ratio as the 2014 R1.
The R3 is suspended by a 41 mm fork, free from any adjustment and a Monocross type shock absorber directly attached to the swingarm. Question brakes, we find more typical road-GT gear on pure sports. ABS is standard, monitoring one disc per wheel. The front plate measures 298 mm and its caliper is a double piston; the rear has a 220 mm and a single piston.

Yamaha 300 YZF-R3 2016

Total sporting aspect should not rhyme with racing for this R3. With half-handlebars placed above the triple tree, a reduced saddle height (780 mm) and suspensions after all basic, the average YZF seems to favor good rides at a lively pace and a sport-GT driving position. A complete dashboard is also part of the game, with fuel gauge, gear indicator engaged, shiftlight and digital speedometer; a needle will take care of giving you the engine speed.

By taking a strategic place in the popular 250/300 sector of emerging countries, the Yamaha YZF-R3 adds the famous R leg, synonymous with circuit and sporting prestige. Its twin cylinder contains what is needed to ensure a minimum of performance, and its silhouette is very successful. In France, success will match the interest in this category. Colin Edwards, he believes in it completely..

****** Update of May 2019:

On May 9, 2019, Yamaha launched a recall campaign of its YZF-R3 and MT-03 for a problem with the fragile front brake lever..

Nature of the problem:

Under certain circumstances, the front brake lever may break during use due to porosity formed by unsaturated material during the low temperature non-pressure molding process. Further investigation revealed that these suspicious levers should have been identified during the testing process and discarded but they accidentally ended up on the production line due to an incorrect cycle..
During normal use, the brake lever cannot break.

To remedy this, Yamaha is initiating a recall campaign which consists of checking the production marking of the front brake lever and replacing the front brake lever if necessary..

In total, 115 machines are concerned for the French market.

Machines concerned:

· MT-03 (B9A7) with serial numbers between RH125 0010041 and RH125 0010640.

· YZF-R3 (B7P1) with serial numbers between RH12D 0002001 and RH12D 0002315.

Yamaha specifies that customers who own these machines have been notified by registered mail and must make an appointment as soon as possible with their Yamaha dealer in order to have this intervention carried out free of charge..

***** Update December 2018:

Yamaha recalled its YZF-R3 and MT-03 for two faults: one on the radiator hoses side, the other on the selector.

Here are the details of these two recalls:

1 / Faulty radiator hose

Due to non-conforming material properties as a result of an improper curing (vulcanization) process, a crack may appear on a radiator hose and, in extreme cases, coolant may leak. Yamaha is therefore initiating a recall campaign which consists of replacing the radiator hose (s)..

Customers who own these machines have been notified by registered mail and must make an appointment as soon as possible with their Yamaha dealer in order to have this intervention carried out free of charge..

Machines concerned:
• YZF-R3 model 2017 (BR51) with serial numbers between RH121 0001001 and RH121 0003280.
• YZF-R3 2015–2016 models (B023 / B02B) with serial numbers between RH071 0001001 and RH071 0006680.
• MT03 model 2018 (B9A1) whose serial numbers are between RH125 0001001 and RH125 0005280.
• MT03 model 2016 (B082) whose serial numbers are between RH07K 0001001 and RH07K 0006640.

In total, 1101 machines concerned for the French market.

2 / Defective selector torsion spring

Due to insufficient shot peening process of the torsion spring, the torsion spring has insufficient strength. Therefore on some machines it may be difficult to change the gearbox ratio. In extreme cases, the torsion spring can break and it will therefore be impossible to change the gearbox ratio. Yamaha is therefore initiating a recall campaign which consists of replacing the torsion spring..

Customers who own these machines have been notified by registered mail and must make an appointment as soon as possible with their Yamaha dealer in order to have this intervention carried out free of charge..

Machines concerned:

• YZF-R3 2015–2016 (B023 / B02B) with serial numbers between RH071 0001001 and RH071 0006000.
• MT03 model 2016 (B082) whose serial numbers are between RH07K 0001001 and RH07K 0004520.

That is, a total of 731 machines concerned for the French market.
