Yamaha 850 MT-09 Tracer 2015

The MT-09 is not just a widely acclaimed roadster. It is also a platform for developing more visually typed editions, and a basis for working towards models affirming other ambitions. Exactly like this Tracer version! A good dose of work allows him to change dimension or even category. If this extension of the name, Tracer, leaves a little doubtful, the American name suits his appetite much better: FJ-09. Because the MT-09 Tracer sees far with its identity and its equipment. A mixture of roadster, road, with a little taste of urban trail in filigree … There is little doubt: it is indeed the descendant of TDM. Although Yamaha never specifies it in its speech. We can understand it: the Tracer still plays a notch frankly above. Let’s see :

Already, the Tracer takes the basic technical and mechanical essentials of the MT-09 (logic …). The assurance of not getting bored on the handlebars: the 3 cylinder sends 115 horsepower with the cross-plane philosophy, and the die-cast aluminum frame knows how to hold and maintain the dynamism of the machine. Just there, we are already a light year away from the TDM 900 and its 86 two-cylinder nags. However, let us leave this lady in her memories. The Tracer is already heading towards a more fiery destiny.
A glance is enough to understand that we are dealing with something quite different from the original roadster. A serious take on styling changes the whole look of the MT, with a fork crown not unlike a certain generation of Fazer. The contours of the tank are completely different, and the most beautiful effect. With its triangular side panels, its widely revised rear end and its sassy road face, the MT-09 Tracer exudes more sex appeal and presence than the original roadster. The effect is not only visual, because Yamaha has worked so deeply: the performance will not be of the same order..

Already, in terms of ergonomics, it has nothing to do with it. Here, the saddle is in two parts. The passenger is entitled to nice handles and the rider can choose two saddle heights. The driving position has been raised and can be further refined because the handlebars can be repositioned forwards or backwards. The protection delegates its effectiveness to a pair of hand guards and an adjustable screen. It can be operated in 3 positions without tools but with gaps of only 15 mm. A little finger each time, not sure that makes much difference. But the attention is commendable.
In view of this build, one would think that the Tracer would have been equipped with a greater suspension travel than the MT-09 … It is not. 137 mm at the front and 130 mm at the rear for both. However, the settings have been revised as a result of his wishes..
And there are those little extras that make your life easier, that quickly make a difference on a daily basis, which can spoil you or save your day. I am thinking of the central stand as standard, the 12 V socket next to the dashboard, sufficient autonomy to drive without thinking about it. The tank of the Tracer is 4 liters more, and Yam announces 300 terminals between each filling.

Silhouette, ergonomics, protection … and electronics. The Tracer really stands out. As on the MT-09, the D-Mode system allows you to choose 3 types of engine behavior; but they are not the same. They are designed to provide a smoother response, something you would expect from a road-minded motorcycle. Active safety is supplemented by a disconnectable TCS traction control and an ABS, supplied as standard. Rather well equipped the MT-09 Tracer, and for a weight in the good measure. 210 kilos fully packed.
Not only is she not ugly, but she looks with LEDs (ah, the good bad pun …). The double optic uses this technology for codes, headlights, and daytime running lights. And it can be adjusted without tools. Note also that the MT-09 Tracer hosts a digital dual window dashboard. The left screen provides information on the fundamental (speed, bar graph speed, time, fuel, TCS, D-Mode, etc …) – the right one deals with amenities (trips, info, gear engaged, consumption, Ambient temperature, and the temperature of the heated grips if you buy them in addition). This instrumentation unit is new in MT, however … A little air of dejà vu … It would not come from the 1200 Super Tenere by chance?!? A tourist’s face and a sportsman’s heart, the promise is tempting.

Yamaha 850 MT-09 Tracer 2015

By becoming Tracer, the MT-09 seems to reconcile the spirit of the TDM and the Fazer by seizing the ardor of the CP3 engine. Yamaha has created a cocktail that is sure to please, perhaps as much as in the era of the first FZS 600 Fazer of the name. The price following the same aggressive policy as for the roadster, the success of the series could indeed accelerate..
