Yamaha MT-07 700 2016

The MT-07 is entering its third season, with all the keys to continue its surfing on success. If serious, make way for fun. Used to offering us many variations of its 4 cylinders on a host of machines and roadsters (FZ and similar), Yamaha puts a dose of sparkling in its range. With the MT-07, things move in the clan of roadsters in tune. The passport for the medium displacement becomes less chubby, divides by 2 the number of its cylinders, the twin invites itself to the party, and the dark side of Japan invades the entry level of the manufacturer. New twin-cylinder, cross-plane spirit, street lieutenant of the MT-09, this little imp is coming to shake the ground:

Beginner’s motorcycle? A little, and above all an introduction to the pleasure of driving, with this little character offered by the twin cylinder. Kawa understood this a while ago with his ER-6, which has been in the top of the market for a while. A little further back in time, the Suzuki SV 650 had taken the industry by storm. The recipe that works for these 3 machines: a nice twin, a light motorcycle, a mouth that flies !
Yam therefore enters this space, leaving the XJ6 to work out with the flexibility of its 4 legs. The MT-07 is drier, more playful, with pieces of cross-plane in its nice mill.
Some figures to whet your appetite: 75 horsepower and almost 7 mkg of torque. Data that we are used to seeing on this kind of machine and engine. The Yam block is distinguished by a 270 ° setting, as on the TDM 900 and XTZ 1200, and unequal ignition intervals. This in order to distribute the torque optimally, a philosophy adopted by the M1 then the R1, the MT-09 and now the MT-07.
The other technical elements of the CP2 unit are more traditional while remaining modern: 4 valves per cylinder, forged pistons, centralization and lowering of the masses with an exhaust under the motorcycle, big work on the fuel, and a 6-speed gearbox..

Yamaha MT-07 700 2016

The MT-07 twin promises responsive and predictable behavior, with that roughness that makes this architecture more engaging than a polished 4-cylinder. The traits of this character are moreover expressed by the design of the machine, nervous and tortured. A bit as if pieces of MT-09 were captured by the Harajuku neighborhood to create this silhouette of angles, rebellion and manga. The frame would almost be lost in it, with its worked pieces and its striking minimalism.
The engine plays an essential role in this, as the main tubular steel structure rests on it, as does the swingarm. The latter, asymmetric and monocross type, is anchored to the housings. A very nice and rewarding element, much more flattering than the rotten square section arms that we had on the basics of yesteryear..
To complete this chassis, Yam installs fairly standard peripherals, from sufficient to serious. No need for an inverted fork here, a standard 41mm will do just fine. Two 282 mm petal discs are located at the front, wedged by monobloc 4-piston calipers. Nice stuff for a machine of this size. Especially since there is not much to brake. The motorcycle weighs only 179 kilos … all wet. It’s 26 kilos less than an XJ6.
The MT-07 is fitted with 17-inch 10-spoke cast aluminum rims. The rubber measures 120 mm at the front, and a surprising 180 mm at the rear. An odd dimension for the watts distributed by the CP2 – a 180, that’s what you find on an R6. But the look, always the look.

Not stingy with emotions, escaping from gloomy or trendy corners, the MT-07 brings a nice boost to the entry-level Yamaha. This machine for young bikers, those who want to escape from conformism, or night people looking for a different taste, will not fail to find a place in the pack of Cubs. The tariff is placed at the level of the daisies, with the key to a great success in 2014; 2015 took the same turn. To be followed closely, because many competitors are pulling their heads. And for those looking for a vintage fragrance with the same pep as this MT-07, there is now the XSR 700 version..
