Yamaha XT 660 R 2015

The first XT was born in 1976; Both a machine for everyone and a machine that has become legendary, it has traveled on all terrains for 3 decades, evolving with customs and technology. XT 500 at the origin, it will know its great evolution in 89 by passing to 600 cm3 while changing design but not spirit. Yesterday, the XT 600 E disappeared on the altar of pollution to make way for the XT 660 R. This engine is well known because it is the adaptation of the block of the former XTZ 660 (nothing to do with with the current Dakar-type machine). The cylinder head is no longer with 5 but with 4 valves. The internal parts are of course optimized and the cooling is now water. As the XT enters the 21st century, it is entitled to the injection bonus, guaranteeing more flexibility and range of use but above all essential to meet Euro 2 anti-pollution standards. The frame is a classic in tubes. of steel, the design of which is new, and which contains engine oil in its upper part. The plastic of the bike has refreshed but remains in the tones of the lineage. The multi-reflector optical unit and the two exhausts bring a touch of aggressiveness while the mudguard is more unique: one part is raised just under the optics (as on all trails) while the other half licks the wheel to protect the engine from projections. New dashboard also, all digital, but still no tachometer. The suspension travel remains unchanged, the XT still allowing you to dawdle in the countryside, YAMAHA XT 660 Ralthough the city will always be the land where it will be used the most. In this regard, good news: the 660 is equipped with a coded key lock. The braking system is beefier with a large 298mm front disc; almost supermoto. With all these improvements, the XT gains strength but not weight: 13 kg overweight. One of Yamaha’s flagship models leaves for 10 years … and more

On the road, the engine behavior remains faithful to the lineage: needy, with traction faithful to the mono architecture but without real excitement. Despite the injection, don’t think about going too low in the towers. It bangs, it suffocates, and the mill starts again without really sparing. A mono remains a mono. It is still more flexible than the 600, and it climbs calmly until the approach of its top speed. No need to reach high speeds on this machine to get exhilarated. An overly optimistic entry into the curve? The XTR gets you out of there. A very good weight distribution, a rigid chassis, and narrow tires: a good cocktail that allows the bike to turn in a flash. In addition, with a large handlebars and a large front wheel, you can catch up with a hazardous trajectory. The machine does not benefit from the latest technologies as for the R1, such as a die-cast aluminum frame, or an engine without liners; but it shows a beautiful homogeneity. Handy and accessible, it protects the vertebrae thanks to the high travel suspensions and their ability to erase irregularities in the road; without compromising efficiency.
YAMAHA XT 660 RRigorous trail, the XTR fishes especially by a lack of character. We expect more from a big mono. And in history, the price has gone up. Too much can be. For the same price, you can eye out for a Honda CB 500 X, a Kawa ER-6n, a Yam MT-07 or a Suz 650 Bandit. The game is not won but the XT has won back its backpacker soul.
