Yamaha XT 660 Z Tenere 2016

Menus

Far from the pachydermal madness of maxi-trail-GTs, the 660 Tenere continues its career discreetly. The public has eyes only for huge machines, full of displacement and promises, more intended for the road than for adventure. The 660 XTZ does not care, rather cultivates the opposite, and that’s good. Just by evoking the name of Tenere, many bikers suddenly see large sand dunes, walks between pebbles, the scent of adventure. More than 20 years ago, this name was closely linked to Paris-Dakar. Because the XT range, Yamaha, and rally raids, it’s a long love story. In the civilian sector, it was the XTZ 660 Tenere which was responsible for maintaining the dream until the end of the 90s, although its services played more in the field of the road. And then, the market changed, the trails were ousted, the mono no longer had the coast.

10 years later, the market still gives pride of place to roadsters and machines with character. What a surprise then to discover that Yamaha has decided to revive the 660 Tenere. How will the market follow? He prefers big trails, with a strong GT tendency. But image question, it slams! An adventurer like that, we don’t see much of it. And yet, it can take you far, disorient you in a setting very different from our formatted environment. Head for the track, without the vibrators but with gravel and dust.

YAMAHA XTZ 660 TenereThe builder is used to fine-tuning his creations. And this XTZ appears very convincing as representing the rally-raid spirit. All-road tires mounted on spoked rims, long travel suspensions, fork tubes protected by bellows (as in the good times), substantial saddle height, “big mouth” fork head with double optics, fairing and look trekking – Everything is there to prune the croupier. All you have to do is add a few accessories such as suitcases, aluminum engine guard or hand guards to complete the outfit..

If the appearance evokes southern spaces, the XTZ will certainly have more access to the comfort aspect, as is the philosophy of the Tenere, than on the enduro or the TT. Its large tank of 22 L and its weight of 183 kg keeps it somewhat away from the forest path; the roads of Corsica seem more indicated.
Compared to the XT from which it derives, the Z gains an additional brake disc, a new more complete dashboard, specific plastic frame, engine and tank covers..
But from near and far, it is difficult to imagine that it is an XT which serves as a basis, as the machine seems so different. Launching a machine of this kind given the current market, the bet is daring … But it doesn’t matter. The XTZ 660 Tenere above all embodies a spirit, a smell of hot sand, allows you to escape, no matter whether it is in Paris, Tunis, Tombouctou or St-Pourçain-sur-Sioule.
