Yamaha YZR-M1 2018

Yamaha presented its YZR-M1 2018 in Madrid on January 24, 2018.

The new version of the prototype from Yam ‘aims to bring the manufacturer of Iwata back to the forefront of the MotoGP World Championship. Of course, the Yamaha are still in the game. But after a difficult year for the official riders, it is more important than ever for the blues to come back with a machine ready to win.. And this from the first race. It will be recalled that in 2017, the two official drivers Maverick Vinales # 25 and Valentino Rossi # 46 finished respectively 3rd and 5th with 4 cumulative victories on the clock. This is the worst result for the brand with three tuning forks since 2007. Blame it on a Yamaha M1 2017 much less homogeneous than usual which will have falsely deluded at the very beginning of the season before becoming a real headache for the pilots and engineers. Especially since on the track, the two men often felt threatened by the French rookie Johann Zarco, immediately at ease and competitive on the Yamaha M1 … 2016 !

So exit this M1 2017 with its inextricable chassis. The team is thus presenting a 2018 model derived from the 2016 machine. A return to a proven base that Sir Rossi called for. And although the version presented will change during the next pre-season tests, we can still make several observations..

Starting with the color of the motorcycle (the famous livery). Despite the rumors, there won’t have been any surprises this year. Very close to the 2017 version with its deep blue, we nevertheless immediately see THE big novelty of this M1 2018. Wahouuuuu !. The Movistar logo changes from green to white. For the rest nothing very special, all the sponsors remain identical and we only observe that the borders of the front face change from white to dark gray.

We also note that the version presented remains very sober on the aerodynamic work. No inner fins or whiskers on the horizon. But we can be sure that these will appear periodically during the various tests … We will not tire of contemplating the magnificent oscillating arm machined to be able to accommodate the exhaust, a solution adopted in 2015 which still remains to be seen. news on this new M1.

On the technical side, the M1 still carries its famous 1000 cm3 engine with cross-plane technology. Appeared for the first time in 2004 on this same M1, this technology is based on a crankshaft setting with crossed planes (cross plane in English) where the crankshaft crankpins are positioned at 90 ° with respect to each other (against 180 ° traditionally). The ignition sequence is also asynchronous, which has the virtue of making the 4-cylinder more full at low and mid-range, more torque and easier to operate. A character close to V4 to tell the truth. Widely proven, this technology ‘made in Yamaha’ also nicknamed ‘Big Bang’ has since found its way to the general public with the transplant of it into the R1 from 2009. To the delight of its users.

More than 240 horses are therefore at the rendezvous. But such a surge of power is nothing without a chassis that allows it to be exploited. And it is on this parameter but also on the electronics that the engineers of Iwata have largely worked during the offseason. The Deltabox frame and the aluminum swingarm were therefore redesigned on the basis of 2016 in order to work on the regularity and on the wear of the tires, two parameters which will have caused many problems the previous season..

For the rest, you can imagine that the manufacturers are not very talkative in detail. We therefore know the minimum on this M1 2018, which is also closely linked to the regulations: unique Magneti Marelli electronic box, 6-speed seamless extractable gearbox with anti-dribble clutch, Brembo brakes with 320 or 340mm front disc (in carbon or steel) , two four-piston calipers, full Ohlins suspensions, 17-inch magnesium rims with Michelin tires and dry weight of 157 Kg which corresponds to the minimum accepted in the Championship.

This 2018 packaging is therefore the working basis for this season which will perhaps be the one of the return to the highest step of the podium. And it will take all the motivation of an aging Valentino Rossi who sees his opportunities to win his 10th title melt away. As for Maverick Vinales, he will want to prove that he has his place in one of the flagship teams of the paddock. On the side of Yamaha, it is the constructor’s title that takes the place of objective, the last two dating from 2015 and 2010. But the task will be difficult. Very difficult. The performances of the acrobat Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) as well as the return to favor of Ducati could well complicate the task of the firm in tuning forks. Let’s not forget that in 2017, Ducati almost stole 2nd place from Yamaha in the manufacturer’s ranking. But Ducati will not have finally been able to take the advantage in the home stretch, due to the mediocre results of Jorge Lorenzo … he who had brought the last title to date at Yamaha ….
