Below are the statements of the drivers who distinguished themselves on Saturday during the second Superbike round. Honor to – double – winner !
Michael van der Mark (Yamaha n ° 60), 1st:
“It was amazing, a wonderful race! We always say that after the first win it gets easier, but I didn’t expect to win today. We made some minor changes on the bike, I was losing still in some areas, but overall my R1 was doing really well and I was able to push as hard as I could. I had to start from ninth place and stay calm during the slightly chaotic first laps. I headed for the fronts. -posts and I followed Alex for a long time. Johnny passed me but I stayed calm and used my head. Towards the end I managed to get him back and walk away! It was amazing to get my first victory, but I really don’t have any words to qualify the double this weekend. The Yamaha is running so well, we had a really good test in Brno, so I can’t wait to race there. This weekend is clearly giving us a lot of motivation and now we know we can go. to win !"
Toprak Razgatlioglu (Kawasaki n ° 54), 2nd:
"I’m really very happy! It’s my first Superbike podium, in my first year, and I’m also the first Turkish rider in history to achieve this result. Today my feeling with the bike was really good and already in the warm-up this morning I had had a good time, the best! I started from tenth place on the grid so it was not easy, I tried to follow Sykes and Rea. At first it was a lot of traffic, but after making a few passes I found the rhythm and started to attack until I hit the top three: I passed Lowes first, then Rea. Donington is a track that I really like and it has definitely helped me, but I hope I can continue in this direction and achieve other good results in the next races..
Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki n ° 1), 3rd:
"It was a tough race because at the start all the riders were very aggressive. The guys who aren’t usually at the front were super aggressive. When I got my place back on the track, I was able to be very gentle and do my job. Michael passed me, attacked a good shot and was able to widen that gap a little. I wasted a lot of tires and energy trying to catch him. also experienced a kind of arm cramp on braking towards the end so it was hard to think of attacking Michael. I could see on my pit board that Toprak was coming back, but I couldn’t do anything against him at the time. "There, because he had a better pace. The goal here at Donington was to leave the weekend over 50 points clear in the championship and we got past that. So it was a positive weekend for me." ".
Alex Lowes (Yamaha n ° 22), 4th:
“It was a tough race, although I was leading for so long. I was hoping to sort out the problems we had at the end of the first run, I knew I could be strong enough. It was a bit better than it was. yesterday but I still have the same handicap which just prevents me from maximizing my performance at the end of the race. What is frustrating for me is that historically my strongest point has always been the last part, or it’s not currently the case. It’s really frustrating but I did my best and rode well. Well done to Michael and his whole team. It’s good to see that we are ahead and that ‘is great for everyone. Now we have to focus on Brno and try to do a little better. ".
Chaz Davies (Ducati n ° 7), 5th:
“Today is clearly an improvement over the first race, although our goal is to finish higher. I feel like I had a good race overall. When the first drops of rain started to fall , I was totally ready to go full throttle, but there wasn’t enough rain to worry the guys in front of us. I did all I could to close the gap and got it on. done to some extent but we struggled a bit too much here. I had to burn a bit of tire to come back and we couldn’t do better today. Hope we can take advantage of what we have accomplished here and learned important lessons to apply to Brno ".
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki n ° 66), 6th:
“Looks like we got the wrong tires today. We selected the standard rear tire again and we really suffered with the traction. The guys in front used the bigger tire. So that disappointed me. . I felt we had good speed, we could be a lot closer, but we were fighting with Savadori, and the lap times were not very good then. I also suffered from the strong wind at the top of Hollywood . I know where to go fast in Donington and I couldn’t hold the throttle like I did in the past so we have to adjust the bike setup. It was a bit mixed today and it wasn’t it. what I expected. We have to move forward, we have a lot of good leads to come ".
Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia n ° 32), 7th:
“We tried something different today which didn’t work perfectly in the race. The first part of the race was pretty good, but when the fuel level dropped I had a really hard time. attacking. The rear tire also looked weird and I had some unusual sensations in the race. I’m quite happy with the results at Donington, we all worked really hard together and the bike felt great. We had a have a good weekend and the fifth place yesterday was a very good result that we deserve. I can’t wait to go to Brno now, Aprilia should be quick there. There is still work to be done on the bike to be faster, but all the guys from SMR and Aprilia worked really hard this weekend and I think we can do something good next time. ".
Leon Camier (Honda n ° 2), 8th:
"I’m really happy with today’s result. We weren’t really sure we could finish both races so finishing in the Top 10 yesterday and today is a big bonus. In today’s race , I didn’t attack too hard from the start, I just tried to get into a rhythm and see which parts of the track I could push more on. I had a good fight with Loris and Marco, we changed positions several times, given my condition it was great to be able to fight. Aside from the results, the team and I worked hard to develop our electronic set-up and we made a lot of progress. which is another positive point to take away from this weekend. Things are going in the right direction with the bike, so I will rest now, and continue my recovery before Brno ".
Loris Baz (BMW n ° 76), 10th:
“It was a tough race. It’s really frustrating because my start was pretty good. I managed to overtake Eugene Laverty and stand up to Jonathan Rea, but I quickly realized that I had no feeling and no grip at the rear. However, the settings had not changed compared to yesterday. However, I put on the 1050 tire whereas yesterday, I had opted for the SC0. This perhaps conditioned the race. I was charging close to 10 km / h on some corners compared to Saturday. We tried this different tire in the warm-up, but it didn’t work: we need to make adjustments to the bike to use it. I went through the whole race, but I didn’t give up to get a few points. It’s a shame because our weekend was off to a good start. We haven’t yet identified our problems. We are going to analyze the data to try to understand. One thing is certain, we must learn to work with this new tire which seems to work pretty well. We just need to adjust the bike accordingly. Once again, it’s a shame to end the event like this, but we have made significant progress this weekend and will do our best in two weeks in Brno ".
Marco Melandri (Ducati n ° 33), 11th:
“I was hoping to be able to keep up yesterday’s pace which would have brought us closer to the top five, but unfortunately the changes didn’t give the expected results. Today the bike was quite nervous and physical to ride. , which affected our performance. I just tried not to make mistakes and take as many points as possible. Let’s focus on Brno, where we were very competitive in practice, although we still have to make some progress to fight again for the best places ".
