World Superbike riders’ statements at Donington Park
The sixth round of the 2017 World SBK took place this weekend in Donington Park, Great Britain. To complete our near-live reports, here are the statements of the Superbike riders at the end of their two British races.
#UKWorldSBK: statements from the 2nd round
Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki n ° 1), 1st:
"I had an incredible first lap today. I was really frustrated because I was twice penalized without it being my fault: by not scoring any points yesterday and today because of my place on the grid I ended up in tenth. I knew I had to have a good start or else my race was ruined. I was really calm today, but after the warm-up I was really nervous . I was going through all of these scenarios in my head, if I was having a good start or a bad start, and then what would my strategy be. My guys worked really hard to build me a brand new bike because yesterday’s was completely destroyed. The first time I rode it this morning, with the changes made by Pere (Riba, his chief mechanic, editor’s note), the bike gave me a new answer. I knew that this day was mine, on condition to get off to a good start ".
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki n ° 66), 2nd:
"I was getting closer to the front of the race (of the leader Rea, editor’s note), but three laps from the end, I started to ask too much from the bike in some portions. If I could have benefited from three more laps, I could have continued my ascent in a more measured way. I was inside on the starting grid and the first curve was a real disaster. I almost had to stop the bike because some were trying to win the race in the first corner. We had to deal with that, then a crash in the last corner made us all hesitate: the race started very badly for me. I’m disappointed to interrupt my streak winning record. at Donington in that way. But all things considered I was fairly beaten and Jonathan rode really well. That day had to come, unfortunately it was today, although I consider our race to be very solid. ".
Chaz Davies (Ducati n ° 7), 3rd:
"It would have been nice to get away with both Kawasaki, but we couldn’t ask for anything better than third place today. We had a terrible start, which made the race very difficult. We had to face off against it. a lot of traffic, I had to avoid pilots fallen in front of me: it looked like a game of Mario Kart. To stand there on the podium, in front of the fans and compatriots, was the most important thing. I didn‘t have much left. grip at the end when I got back up on VD Mark, because I asked a lot of the back to come back up. I just attacked, tried not to make any mistakes and figured out very quickly where to pass. It was a Tight race. Anyway, I’m confident for the rest of the season as this track has always been difficult for us. We are retaining a lot of good things in view of Misano ".
Michael van der Mark (Yamaha n ° 60), 4th:
“My start was not perfect. But in Donington you have to be ahead, especially in the first corner. In the second lap, I passed Leon Haslam in Melbourne, then I passed Mercado in the last corner, and I I ended up second. After that I kept attacking. I could see Jonathan Rea was too fast, but I kept pushing and doing my own run. I improved my pace significantly yesterday, which makes me particularly happy. I had managed to widen the gap, but in the last nine laps Chaz Davies kept coming up on me. He passed me one lap from the end. I tried. to retaliate, in vain, and unfortunately I missed the podium. I’m really happy with my race and the bike. We have shown that we can get on the podium in a normal race and I am very happy. should be strong in Misano. We know where we need to improve now: in the slower corners. Chaz was stronger than me, and unfortunately it was the last section of the trail. It’s good for us to realize that we are strong in the faster areas, and to know where to improve. We have a good test in Misano this week. We therefore hope to be able to arrive at the race weekend having made progress ".
Alex Lowes (Yamaha # 22), 5th:
“Today’s race was obviously not as fun as yesterday with all its overtaking! My start was not great and I got a bit stuck in the first laps. had a hard time passing Mercado on the Aprilia. I tried a few times, I widened at one point, so that the delay on Michael (Fri der Mark, his teammate, Editor’s note) reached a few seconds. clear track in front of me, I lined up constant lap times, but honestly I couldn’t go any faster. At the end of the race I couldn’t do anything against Chaz because he was faster than me. I had to be reasonable. Of course it would have been nice to push until the end and join the fight for the podium, but I didn’t feel capable today, so I had to make sure points. A third and a fifth place at home is really good, I’m happy. We closed the gap on the fourth in the championship (Lowes is 16 points s of Melandri, NDLR). It was a really positive weekend. A huge thank you to everyone who came out because it’s really, really nice to run in front of my fans. I think we can say we did a good job and I’m looking forward to Misano. One of the good things about this race is that the best drivers in the championship overtook me, so I was able to follow them to see where we are strong and where we need to improve. I can’t wait to do our tests in Misano to try to improve ".
Leon Camier (MV Agusta n ° 2), 6th:
“It was a good race for us overall, and it’s a positive result for the championship. We had a few minor issues during the weekend, but luckily I had a good feeling with the bike in race and I was able to stay with the guys in front. I am looking forward to the next event in Misano: I hope we can have another positive race weekend for all our Italian fans ".
Xavi Fores (Ducati n ° 12), 7th:
“It was our toughest weekend this season. It went better today, I had more confidence in the bike. Seventh place is also a positive result for the championship. Now we are starting to think. in Misano, a circuit that I really like and where our Ducati can be fast. Our aim is to stay close to the first group, as we were in Imola ".
Roman Ramos (Kawasaki n ° 40), 8th:
"It was a great race for us: starting from 19th place on the grid and finishing 8th, that means we did a good job! The track conditions were not very good, but I tried to go up without damaging the tires. It paid off and my race pace was better than in the first run. I’m happy, we are going home with another good result. In that I have to thank my team ".
Raffaele de Rosa (BMW n ° 35), 10th:
“The conditions today were different: it was warmer than yesterday. I tried to improve the pace and although I did a little bit, I was honestly hoping for more. I continue to work. to be able to reward the team, because they all work so hard for me. I hope we can take a step forward in Misano ".
Stefan Bradl (Honda # 6), 11th:
“We made a few changes to the chassis before the race to improve the rear grip and it was indeed a bit better. Right after the start however, on the first lap, Krummenacher fell in front of me. I had to brake. , almost stop, so I lost a lot of time. I ended up last and had to do my best to get as many places as possible. Eleventh place is a decent result, but there are still a lot of work to do. Fortunately, we have tests in Misano, they will be very important for us ".
