World Superbike riders’ statements at the Lausitzring
The ninth round of the World SBK 2017 took place this weekend at the Lausitzring, Germany. To complete our near-live reports, here are the statements of the Superbike riders at the end of their two German races.
#GermanWSBK: statements from the 2nd round
Chaz Davies (Ducati n ° 7), 1st:
“It was a great race and I enjoyed every minute of it. It was different from yesterday as we had to start from the third row on the grid. We got off to a good start and from the first laps we got the outposts in my sights. So when I saw Rea tack the lead, I tried to chase him and Marco out. It wasn’t easy to pass them, but once I did, I tried to take my own pace, to drive clean, and not to make mistakes. I was surprised by our pace today, in the highs of 1 ’36. We have really improved since the tests here a month ago, and it shows the effort that everyone is making. I am confident for Portimao, but for now we will take advantage of this double. After that we will prepare for a new battle ".
Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki n ° 1), 2nd:
“Chaz was really solid in the second run and his pace was good. I felt strong at the start with the really good grip, but as soon as I started to lose traction the bike got very physical to ride. had to force the bike and the track is so bumpy. Yesterday’s race has also started to kick in too. I didn’t scare myself, I just tried to pretty much master the bike. saw that my gap on Marco was progressing, tenth after tenth, we just had to consolidate until the end. When I lost grip on the angle, I just couldn’t stay in front, but I have tried. I am happy with the results of this weekend as the bike has never really performed well here and we started off on the wrong foot on Friday so I am really happy with my team, the changes we made and the great progress made. We are leaving the Lausitzring with an additional 40 points, that suits me very well ".
Marco Melandri (Ducati n ° 33), 3rd:
“After the problems we had yesterday, I wouldn’t have thought I could get on the podium. But we did a great job with the team, changing the weight distribution and the overall balance of the bike. Panigale R was much easier to ride today, and I felt comfortable. Unfortunately the bike was still moving a lot in a few corners and I was losing ground under acceleration. I tried to brake later for catch up, but I made a few small mistakes and decided to secure the podium, reflecting on what happened during the first race in Misano (Marco had crashed, Editor’s note …). was a positive test: we are continuing to learn new things on the bike and we will soon be riding on tracks that better suit my riding style. I am confident for the next meetings. ".
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki n ° 66), 4th:
“From the start, things didn’t go as planned by any means. I started well but I hit Savadori’s back in the first corner, so I lost all the advantage of the good start. when I had clear laps towards the end that I started to pull myself together again. Before that I didn’t have the confidence to pass the other guys on the brakes and I struggled every time I tried to tackling them. I was struggling just because I couldn’t get out of the corners as well as I wanted. This hassle got in my way the whole race and I’m disappointed that I didn’t have enough confidence to pass on really, really hard braking . I wanted to get on the podium but unfortunately we did not make the best of our situation. We will continue to work, there are still four events remaining ".
Alex Lowes (Yamaha # 22), 5th:
“I’m disappointed with my start to the race. I wanted to improve my start yesterday and make the best use of my first row but it didn’t work! My pace was a little better than at the start of the first race. In the end, it was a good race for me, I had fun on the R1 despite this track so strange. I really enjoyed the fights. I’m happy to have got a sixth and a fifth place this weekend , but we can definitely improve on those results. So I’m going to work with the guys and see if we can make some decent progress for Portimao. Honestly, I really enjoyed the way we worked this weekend, I think that the guys did a great job and I’m looking forward to Portugal! "
Leon Camier (MV Agusta n ° 2), 6th:
“Unfortunately I didn’t have a perfect start, and I think we need to work on adjusting the clutch to start better. Despite that, the bike was perfect again today and I had a very good pace. I tried to pass Sykes at the start and we started to fight for 4th position. His pace was very strong too. I made a little mistake on the last corner and Lowes beat me for fifth place. I’m a little frustrated with this ball but at the same time I’m happy with our performance and I’m looking forward to the next races in Portimao ".
Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia n ° 32), 7th:
“I’m generally happy with how the weekend went. In the race today I tried with all my might to stay with the leading group, and struggled to pass the drivers in front of me. in a good pace and I knew my opponents were very close behind me. I defended myself well and concentrated on my pace. Towards the end of the race I tried to attack again and regain some places but we had a little grip problem and I lost acceleration. I think the team had a good weekend. We made good progress with Aprilia RSV4 RF and we know how to improve more. Portimao is a great track, but quite difficult. So we will have to work hard. I want to thank SMR and Aprilia Racing for their hard work. ".
Jordi Torres (BMW n ° 81), 8th:
“The race didn’t go too badly. The bike and I had to give it our all. The pace was crazy and we struggled to keep up. I was able to stay close to the group in front of me, but not quite did at his level either. I had a great time and can say I did my best anyway. The bike wasn’t turning the way I wanted it to, or like the bikes of the faster guys. will continue to work to be more competitive in Portimao ".
Michael van der Mark (Yamaha no.60), 11th:
“It was a tough race. At the start I struggled to overtake a few riders and wasted a lot of time. I struggled to get the bike going open and it was hard to find a way around that. To be honest my run was pretty consistent, but not fast enough. I have to find a way to get the bike to turn again because that’s usually one of its strengths. to work very hard and, hopefully, achieve better results in Portimao. Because this weekend, we did not achieve the expected results ".
Stefan Bradl (Honda n ° 6), 13th:
“It was good to be in the race (Stefan forfeited the premiere, Editor’s note). I felt able to drive because when the adrenaline starts to build up in you, you don’t feel too much pain. not taking the start yesterday in order to be in good shape today was the right decision. Unfortunately, my feeling on the bike was not perfect: she was nervous on the many bumps and I also suffered a little in corner exits. The lack of rolling yesterday certainly didn’t help. I had to control my pace most of the time, but in the last laps I was able to push a little harder and pass De Rosa before the line I am a little disappointed with this race, and the weekend in general of course, but I hope we can make more progress in the next event ".
