WSBK Germany (2): Davies and Ducati, lords of the Lausitz ring
Deprived of a probable double at the Lausitzring last year by heavy showers, Chaz Davies and Ducati were not disturbed by the fine drops that appeared at the end of this second round of 2017.. No.7 wins another masterful victory ahead of Rea and his No.1 Kawasaki….
Fourth in the first German round yesterday, Marco Melandri posted his Ducati n ° 33 this midday in pole position in front of five machines from four other brands: the MV Agusta n ° 2 of Leon Camier, the Yamaha n ° 22 of Alex Lowes, the ‘Aprilia n ° 32 by Lorenzo Savadori, Ducati n ° 12 by Xavi Fores and BMW n ° 81 by Jordi Torres.
The winner Chaz Davies places his Panigale R at the back of the third row. He is preceded by his podium neighbors: the two official Kawasaki n ° 1 of Jonathan Rea and the n ° 66 of Tom Sykes. Tenth in the first race, Eugene Laverty will try to take the wheels of the championship leaders…
Departure : Melandri started very strong, far ahead of Fores, Savadori, Camier, Rea, Davies, Sykes, Lowes, Torres, Laverty, etc. Jonathan began his ascent from the first series, easily overtaking Camier. Davies imitates him in the middle of the course but the ruthless "JR" already passes Savadori !
Melandri completed the first lap a third of a second earlier than Fores. Rea is already on the podium, then overtakes the private Ducati n ° 12 at the end of the first sequence of the German route! Davies climbed to fourth place moments later while Sykes collided with Camier, sixth behind Savadori…
Lowes was a few steps behind the n ° 66 Kawasaki but moved away from the n ° 50 Aprilia of Laverty and the n ° 81 BMW of Torres. The latter are fighting for ninth place. In front of his own, Reiterberger occupies the eleventh place, his compatriot Bradl the fifteenth.
In front, Sykes blew the Camier lock in the 3rd lap. The English Ninja is in the wake of Savadori, but is one second behind Davies who climbed to third position ahead of Fores, and two seconds behind Rea still second in Melandri’s aspi.
Rea sets the best time in the race but it is immediately erased by Davies … The Welsh is on the north Irish! Warned of Chaz’s return, Jonathan decides to take control of the race in the 5th lap.
The n ° 7 achieves a new cannon trick and finds himself in the pots of his Italian teammate at the famous n ° 33. Less swift in the stretches, however, Davies could not surprise Melandri on the brakes. Rea has the opportunity to breathe a little.
Four seconds behind the leading trio, Xavi Fores is under pressure from … six pilots! Lorenzo Savadori, Tom Sykes, Leon Camier, Eugene Laverty, Alex Lowes and Jordi Torres form a dense peloton and suitably animate this second Superbike race.
On the 8th lap, Davies took advantage of a slight gap by Melandri – and a significantly higher corner speed – to overtake Melandri. Instantly, "Chazie" drops his colleague and joins his best enemy "Johnny" !
Laverty fell on the 9th lap and despite himself split the peloton into two: Savadori, Fores and Sykes on the one hand, Camier, Lowes and Torres on the other. Reiterberger, who rolls a second and a half behind his Spanish colleague (also on S1000RR), reaches his national Top 10.
In front, Davies remains lurking behind Rea, allowing Melandri to come back. Shortly before the halfway point, Chaz launches a lightning attack in the first sequence of the German route and takes the matter in gloves … Convinced that he can win a second victory, Chaz hopes that Marco will have the capacity to bicker with Jonathan.
Eight seconds later, Fores suddenly lost several places. Savadori and Sykes are joined by Camier, himself chased by Lowes who leads a second group made up of Fores, Torres … and soon Reiterberger! The two BMW riders quickly devoured the Panigale n ° 12 then in full distress.
Two-thirds of the race are reached and the pace in the lead does not weaken: Davies and Rea are still running under 1 ’37, while Melandri is just above. Marco therefore lets go slightly on the Kawasaki of the "Number One", but has nothing to fear from the n ° 66 located at 10 seconds. Sykes drives ahead of Camier, Lowes, Savadori, Torres and Reiterberger.
Six laps from the end, a few drops appear on the screens! If the rain were to intensify, the pilots would have to return to the pits to put on rain tires … This is out of the question for the moment: the track remains dry and the pilots continue to put – very – heavy gas.
Mainly Chaz Davies, is the last to maintain his lap times in 1’36. In three laps, the winner of the first round built up a lead of almost two seconds. White flags with a red cross then reappear to signal to the drivers that rain is falling on the last sector of the circuit..
It would take more to cool the "Red Dragon". The marshals also put away their flags two laps from the end: Chaz’s double became clearer! Second place for Rea also since the double world champion has a second ahead of Melandri.
Eleven seconds behind Marco, Tom Sykes gradually moves away from Leon Camier. The latter focuses on Alex Lowes who is behind him … and overtakes him a few turns before crossing the finish line! Lorenzo Savadori finishes in MV Agusta aspiration, a good distance from Jordi Torres.
The "wild-card" Reiterberger allows himself a long wheelie to celebrate his ninth place in front of his home crowd. Van den Mark is much less satisfied with his eleventh place, just behind Fores and far ahead of Mercado, Bradl, Ramos, De Rosa, etc..
As relentless as in the first round, Chaz Davies took advantage of this second victory to nibble five more points on the – wide – leader Jonathan Rea (381 points). The n ° 7 Ducati goes back above all to the second place occupied by Tom Sykes: the Welshman reduced his delay by 21 points (311 to 276)…
In the background, Melandri (218) distances Lowes (169), Fores (146) and Van der Mark 135). Deprived of a second fifth place on the finish line, Leon Camier nevertheless made a good operation in Germany (120), just like Jordi Torres who moved away from Laverty (109 against 95).
Next distribution of points for Superbike – and Supersport – riders: in three weeks, on the hilly circuit of Portimao (Portugal). Stay connected any time: the main declarations of the weekend will be published tomorrow on Site !
