WSBK Qatar (2): victory and records for Rea, second place for Davies !
The last race of the WorldSBK 2017 was won this evening by Jonathan Rea who took the opportunity to set two new records, one personal, the other absolute … Second in this final, Chaz Davies secures his second place in the world championship.
Fourth in the first WSBK round last night, Eugene Laverty has the honor of starting the final race of the 2017 season from pole position. The Irish rider places his RSV4 ahead of that of his teammate Lorenzo Savadori, the official Kawasaki of Tom Sykes, the BMW Althea of Jordi Torres, the Kawasaki Puccetti of Sylvain Guintoli and the MV AGusta "Reparto Corse" of Leon Camier.
Winner of the race on Friday evening, the three-time world champion Jonathan Rea must place his ZX-10RR in ninth place on the Qatari grid, behind the official Ducati of Chaz Davies – who is fighting Sykes for the "title" of vice- world champion – and Marco Melandri.
Fall victims (s!) In the first round, Alex Lowes, Xavi Fores and Michael van Der Mark start in this order from the fourth row. Jeremy Guarnoni, 11th yesterday, gains a place in relation to the qualifications: the n ° 11 of the Kawasaki Pedercini team starts from the 16th place.
Departure : (Due to a technical problem beyond his control, MNC could not follow the race and can only offer his summary. Sorry …) Eugene Laverty took the lead on the first braking before being beaten by Chaz Davies which quickly produces its effort to create a slight gap. Third, Tom Sykes ahead of Alex Lowes, takes over Laverty.
At the draw of the long straight line of the Losail circuit, Tom must bow to his teammate Jonathan Rea, who started from ninth place on the grid … The Northern Irishman is in pursuit of Davies, and it only needs a few curves to make the junction on its rival Ducati.
Sykes, on the other hand, does not manage to get back on his target n ° 7 … The pace imposed by his teammate is too high … While leading the peloton, the Ninja n ° 66 is trapped in turn 14: he loses the front of his bike and with it, all hope of retaining his status as "Number Two" of the World Superbike.
In the lead, Davies, threatened by Rea, is frightened by slipping from behind: the incident puts him in control of the race! Despite all his efforts, the Welshman sees his North Irish cousin move away … and his signaller signals the return of the two Yamaha officials: Van der Mark and Lowes !
The pass of arms between the two team-mates made the business of Chaz Davies who managed to keep safe and secure second place under the checkered flag, far behind Jonathan Rea. Alex Lowes finally completes the podium in front of his teammate Michael van den Mark.
Fifth, Xavi Fores overcame the other factory Panigale R, that of Marco Melandri. Laverty finished seventh ahead of Sylvain Guintoli, and eighth again ahead of Leon Camier and his MV Agusta F4 RC. Roman Ramos completes the Top 10.
The only Honda rider hired following Davide Giugliano’s forfeit, suffering from gastroenteritis, Jake Gagne took 12th place behind Raffaele De Rosa. The Italian’s team-mate, Jordi Torres was unable to finish this final, catapulted by his S1000RR … Lorenzo Savadori suffered a less brutal but just as annoying technical problem.
With this second consecutive success in Qatar, Jonathan Rea improves his record for victories in one season by one unit: 16! A record that remains personal: for the record, Doug Polen won 17 rounds of the 1991 Superbike World Championship which included as many races as the 2017 WSBK.
On the other hand, the ruthless "JR" beats the absolute record of number of points registered in one year: 556, that is to say four points more than Colin Edwards during the season 2002 (26 races also). The "Texas Tornado" consoles itself by keeping the podium record climbed the same season: 25, against 24 for Rea this year !
