The 2017 MotoGP season is driving statistics
The San Marino Grand Prix this weekend in Misano (Italy) marks the thirteenth stage of an exceptional 2017 MotoGP season: only 26 points separate the first from the fourth in the provisional general classification, unheard of since … 1993 ! Other records are also exceeded, which shows an exciting tightening of the level of pilots and motorcycles in the premier class. Explanations.
Since his victory at Silverstone during the, Andrea Dovizioso has taken over the reins of the world championship from Marc Marquez: casually, this change of leadership is already the fifth this season, since the classification has been successively led by Viñales, Marquez (two times), Rossi and Dovizioso! In fact, very clever the one who can designate for sure the: who will complain about it ?!

As the MotoGP season entered its last third, it was impossible to give a decisive advantage to a rider or a motorcycle … Maverick Viñales and his Yamaha started off with a bang before falling into line, while Marc Marquez continued tough races with resounding victories on his Honda. The two Spaniards are certainly a cut above in terms of velocity, but they regularly suffer the onslaught of competition and tire-related broadcasts, not always to the taste of their motorcycle.
Dovi passes the 4, Ducati, Honda and Yamaha too !
As for Andrea Dovizioso, he spent the start of the season railing against his Ducati – according to him not as good as in 2016 following the abandonment of the fins – before giving the lie to his observation by winning brilliantly. The Italian already has four victories, whereas he had previously won only twice in the premier class: in, then in. The n ° 4 has therefore already quadrupled his balance of annual victories !
And here he is now at the head of the provisional classification with 9 points ahead of Marquez and 13 over Viñales, tiny gaps at this stage of the season! Even stronger: Valentino Rossi, fourth, is only 26 lengths behind his compatriot, barely more than a victory gap. A scenario that had never occurred since the introduction of the current points system in 1993 !
Unfortunately, this highly disputed match takes a lead in the wing with the unfortunate, forced to forfeit in front of her family in Misano and most certainly also for the race in Aragon (Spain) on September 24. The Doctor will probably be overtaken in the standings this weekend by Dani Pedrosa, still mathematically in contention for the title with his 35 points behind the leader.

Another proof of the competitiveness of this 2017 season: the three manufacturers who have won this year – Ducati, Honda and Yamaha – each have four successes. Note, however, that the Bologna brand owes its four victories to "DesmoDovi" alone, when Honda and Yamaha have distributed them over their two pilots: three for Marquez and one for Pedrosa, three for Viñales and one for Rossi..
It balances in front … and behind !
The last time that three different brands scored at least three successes dates back eleven years, in 2006! This near equality translates into equally tight gaps in the "constructors" championship since Honda and Yamaha are currently holding 19 points, the smallest gap since the appearance of the MotoGP 4-stroke category in 2002 !
Moreover, it is interesting to note that this tightening of levels is not observed only at the outposts: four times already, the difference at the finish between the first and the fifteenth was less than 35 seconds. In the last race at Silverstone, Loris Baz finished 33.901 sec behind Dovizioso on his private Ducati, though two years older. !
For many, unique electronics are partly responsible for such a tightening of forces, which also benefits builders who are struggling to get to the top of the pyramid. The progress made by Aprilia demonstrates this, as does that of KTM with its new RC16: Pol Espargaro again finished at the gates of the Top 10 at Silverstone (11th), having already clinched a 12th place at Le Mans, an 11th at Assen and a splendid 9th in Brno !
Finally, how can we not be delighted with the repeated performances of certain satellite pilots, sometimes faster on their private motorcycles than the official prototypes ?! We think of course of Johann Zarco and his teammate Jonas Folger (second in their respective national Grand Prix on their Yamaha M1 Tech3), but also of Danilo Petrucci, third in Italy then second in the Netherlands on his Ducati-Pramac n ° 9 !

So much proof, if needed, of the tight and homogeneous character of this fantastic 2017 MotoGP season which will certainly go down in history! And another reason to protest against the which places a tenth title out of the reach of Valentino Rossi, him whose record and charisma move the crowds every weekend…
