The largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world could not do without a Supermotard model in its range. This category is booming and everyone is coming to it. Sport or fun, the styles differ somewhat according to the manufacturers but the concept is emulated. Direct competitor of the recent Yamaha 660 XT-X, here is the new and promising 650 FMX.
For its first Supermot, Honda wanted to do things right. The look of the FMX is very nice, both player and sport, and even muscular with its large inverted fork of 45 mm in diameter. The frame is a mono-backbone, the same type as that of the Hornet 600 and 900. A backbone which should bring rigidity and lightness to the FMX. It also serves as an oil reservoir. The rear is not the least worked, far from it. There are 2 exhausts (catalyzed) housed under the sidewalls of the saddle, the outlets of which are oriented downwards. Surprising, but according to Honda, the sound of mono is more “exciting”. Between these 2 silencers, there is a diode rear light with a design very close to the brand’s sports cars..
The engine is not that young. This is an antique but reliable and robust 644cc 4 valve mono. Born more than 15 years ago, he fitted the Dominator as well as the SLR and FX. It does not have as many potatoes as many European mills, but it is rather well supplied with a couple. Largely amortized, it will limit the price of the machine.
Supermoto fans will be happy to see the big manufacturers lean on the new wave.
No need to bleed to afford a Vertemati or a supermot prepared for 10,000 €.
But if it is aimed at the greatest number, it will not be able to excel for everyone. Understand that the FMX is aimed at a young audience, who loves fun and who discovers this kind of machines. Precisely, let’s take a look at this relationship that will take place between you, the kid, and her, the Honda supermot..
Already, the look, you got stuck on it. It immediately makes you want to try it and have fun. And the big inverted fork, it throws. Alright, ok, there aren’t a lot of boobies in mono – but you don’t care. You don’t want to master 200 nags like Rossi; you want to put the handle in the corner and please yourself without having to fight with an uncontrollable pack of horses. The good old 650 will never overwhelm you, and it’s proven.
What is nice with Honda as with this FMX is that we have it in hand right away. You get on the (high) saddle, you ride 100 m and you understand everything. Pleasant to drive with just the right amount of pep to have fun, the machine does not intend to compete with more rare models but enthusiastically takes the budding pilot. Braking is in line with the overall philosophy, allowing via a dose of experience to impress the friends with some pretty stops.
Nice FMX, said the youngster. But the initiate with a more keen eye and senses may be less excited. When you have a little bottle, less than 40 hp, it’s frankly just for fun – especially as the mill does not like low or high revs. The chassis is certainly precise but the firm suspension undermines comfort as soon as the road is no longer billiards. Finally, the price, even if it does not reach the top of a Vertemati SM 570, is something to think about: almost the same as that of a DRZ 400 SM, more modern, sportier and more fun. Honda could have made an effort on the price, especially since the engine is not of the latest technology. But there is the inverted fork, the rims, etc….
Fun, nice, obvious, the FMX is a nice machine to discover the motorcycle and / or the supermotard. If his aesthetic is quite relevant, his heart does not have the fry as much. And the Renthal handlebars will not console the sight of the ultra sparse dashboard. Sure that at less than 6,000 €, she would have put a serious asset in her pocket … Thing made for the 2006 vintage – but too late.
