But what is this thing ? A trail? Not really…. A roadster? Uh, neither. In the world of the car, we would call it a S.U.V. At the tarmos, we don’t really have a category to define the Crossrunner. Maybe there’s a guy at Honda who blew a hose and put together pieces of bikes he had in his lab – you remember the Peugeot * ad where cars collide and then explode creating new cars ? The Crossrunner is a bit like that: a mix of 800 VFR, Transalp and CB.
So, who is this “trail-ste” intended for? For those who like the trail riding position and want the driving sensations of a roadster. Not easy to achieve, so a certain challenge and the emergence of a niche that Honda will clear with this machine whose duckling face will leave more than one doubtful. But it is in detailing it that we will ask ourselves the most questions and start to see the horizons that the Crossunner wants to explore..
Show what you got under all that plastic. A double interrupted aluminum frame; like, same technique as that of VFR 800 and CBR 929/954 Fireblade. Oh, nice, a single-sided swingarm like the one on the VFR (again?). And, ah, a nice V4 to propel it all, with the same displacement and identical power to that of the VFR (obviously….). Who would have thought that the block of the RC 45 would one day power a trail? This mill has made many people happy for many years, and today it is discovering a new setting to walk the roads and paths..
Narrower, more lively and with a much nicer sound than an in-line 4, the 782 cm3 V4 is adapted to its new use. It benefits from an evolution of the VTEC system (passage from 2 to 4 valves per cylinder above a certain engine speed) with a variable timing process. A first in the bike world, which allows you to vary the opening and closing times of the valves. The 100 available horsepower can therefore take you at high speed in a relaxed position ’without having to eat too much fuel. Honda announces 350 terminals with the full, that is to say a conso barely higher than 6 liters to 100. A limited thirst and not necessarily easy to obtain when one sees the imposing profile of the X-runner. Except that it spent 120 stays in the wind tunnel to better manage the aerodynamic flows, offer good stability at any speed and optimize protection.
And anywhere? Must not exaggerate. This is not an enduro or a Yamaha XT-R or KTM Adventure style all-purpose machine. By the way, with road tires on 17-inch rims, you’re not going to cross the crevassed paths of the Atlas, but rather the pungent road of the Lones. With its better ground clearance, the machine will be able to continue where sports cars and roadsters stop. In addition, the raised handlebars will allow you to find a well-raised, non-tiring riding position and swing the bike from one angle to another effortlessly thanks to the large lever arm offered by the width of the handlebars. And worse, the Crossrunner doesn’t intend to leave the pilot alone. The saddle has really been designed to take a passenger: a nice flat seat, barely above that of the pilot, low footrests, large passenger handles – It changes us from the ejection seat a CBR 1000.
But is your Crossrunner rigid? Because a trail and its steel cradle, it will twist with my driving and the potato of a V4…. Hey, I just said it’s not trail but a “trail-ster”. The perimeter frame derived from the VFR offers top-notch stiffness, far superior to that of off-roaders and much of roadsters. Active safety is included from the outset with the standard presence of the ABS Handset; acting on 3-piston calipers trapping 296 mm discs.
With his Crossrunner, Honda is exploring a new path, as he likes to try with striking machines (DN-01, Pacific Coast, Goldwing, etc.). The experiment is to be tried, because this genetic mixing surprises at first and then the combination of factors and philosophy arouses curiosity.
