While the CBR 1000 RR SP brings the most important technological evolution that this sport has known for the past 10 years, a more accomplished version of world competition. Bewitched by the vapors of the HRC, an even more refined CBR completes the Honda offer: the SP2.
Without forgetting that it is above all the homologation model to engage in Superbike, let us be drunk: 500 copies will be available, and as many reasons to smoke ZX-10RR, GSX-R 1000 R , Aprilia RSV4 RF, Ducati 1199 R or Yamaha R1-M. Since the SP, Honda has pushed the plug a little further and we can guess between its aluminum walls memories of VTR SP-2 and some hints of RC45. Competitors who are fans of the winged brand, you have your desire here.
The decor is beautiful but … almost identical to that of the SP. Not even a little exuberance, a specific dress, or a replica?!? Honda could have cracked something more original to mark the occasion. However, on closer inspection, certain elements underline the more exceptional aspect of the SP2. The gold graphics under the CBR Fireblade logo, the carbon texture embedded in a more electric blue, and the rims with different spokes concentrate most of the visual specificities.
As with the ZX-10RR, the real added value of this special series is hidden at the technical level. Don’t think that the wheel spokes have changed shape just for fun. These Marchesini forged aluminum rims reduce inertia by 18% and 19%, resulting in better liveliness for the SP2.
But the main interest is in the engine. With 192 horses, there is enough to make big arsouille on the road. For the competition, this is far from sufficient. So, this CBR receives modifications to allow it to receive a muscular preparation. Without changing its internal dimensions, the 4-cylinder block benefits from larger valves, 31.5 mm (+1 mm) at the intake and 25.5 mm (+ 2.5 mm) at the exhaust. In addition, they have an included ADM / ECH angle of 10/12 ° (against 11 ° / 11 °). This won’t mean much to you, but for an engine manufacturer, there is a clear interest in brewing power at high speeds..
Under the cylinder head, we are also preparing for more watts. Drawing on the experience of the HRC and RCV 213, engineers optimized combustion chambers, modified pistons, fitted longer spark plugs and improved cooling.
Go back to the top of the block; turn the cylinder head cover and look at the pushrods: wider, less high, less thick and lighter, they are just waiting to receive nastier camshafts.
The SP2 recovers all the electronics of the SP, with a few small adaptations. Specific settings, a speed limiter for the pitlane, a Launch Control standing start aid, and 5 driving modes instead of 3.
We therefore also find the crowd of electronic modules stung, like all the competitors, in Star Wars: electronic accelerator, 5-axis IMU inertial measurement unit, traction control, adaptive cornering ABS, color digital dashboard 3 display modes, semi-active Ohlins S-EC suspensions, wheeling control, up & down shifter … phew !!!
And let’s not leave out the purely mechanical delicacies, like the Brembo monobloc brake calipers, the titanium reservoir, the aluminum swingarm and perimeter frame mosses, as well as the Pirelli Supercorsa tires ready to stick (a little) the road and (a lot) the track.
Ready to receive upgradeable kits to go for the win at the highest level, the SP2 gives pride of place to selected parts (Ohlins, Marchesini, Brembo), while retaining components unworthy of such a level. Classic rubber hoses hooked up to M4-30 / 32 calipers are a waste of efficiency. For this level of performance, braided hoses should be mandatory. No clutch lever adjustable in spacing … and since we have the Brembo top at the bottom of the fork, why not complete the package as it should with a master cylinder of the same temper ?!?
Ah yes, I was telling you about the kits. To fetch seconds, you will have the choice between Sport Race and Full Race. Two ways to optimize the CBR 1000 RR SP2, and many more trajectories to cut with a scalpel. Honda wants revenge. The tool is there !
