KTM has established solid positions in the big trail segment. Its 1290 Adventure are the most muscular in the category. As for their reputation, it is well established. Now is the time to carry an offensive in intermediate territory, as the 790 Duke does in roadsters.. For this, a new 790 Adventure enriches the family of adventurers.
Katoche obviously decided to approach the field with a different face. Some cultivate the trail physiognomy, others are inspired by rally-raids … The Austrian wanted to stand out, with an aspect combining an equine and a grasshopper. The upper profile is slender, the head eccentric, the belly bloated; daring plays with mischief for a motorcycle with strong expectations. Because she wants nothing less than to lead her crew on the daily, the roads, the paths, the week and the weekends, with this belief that adventure awaits at every turn between home and work. Or behind every stone hidden by an avenue. In short, Adventure for everyone, everywhere. With the welcome accessibility of an engine perched between power and reasonable.
Because if the 1290 is salivating with its 160 nags, its size nevertheless intended it for an informed clientele. The 1090 is already more accessible but still impressive. This is where the 790 plays one of its master cards, with a template and an engine that flirt with anyone wanting to set foot in the stirrup..
This 799cc LC8e first cut its teeth than the Duke. Do not think that the Adventure is a trail like any other. KTM is a specialist in machines cut for infinite horizons. This translates into tips, solutions drawn from the enormous experience of the manufacturer. Take the air filter: on most bikes (except cross and enduro), you must turn the tank and then open the air box. On the 790 Adventure, its housing is hidden under the saddle for unparalleled accessibility and change.
Another element, the tank. We were surprised by the biasse leaning against the belly of the motorcycle. It is actually the lower part of the said reservoir. By storing the fuel so low, the designers lowered the center of gravity and brought multiple benefits. More agility, more knee room, easier to stand up when driving off-road. The manufacturer announces about 450 km of autonomy thanks to the 20 liters of the tank. Enough to cross New Caledonia in one go.
The 790 Adv wants to put its pilot in good conditions. Already by optimally organizing the space of the seat (design of the tank, saddle adjustable in height to 830 or 850 mm) but also with a series of appreciable elements: handlebar with six adjustment positions over 30 mm, rest notched feet with removable rubber inserts, pair of hand guards and high screen. On the R version, the bubble is much smaller, in order to clear the visual field. Just in case, the bindings are compatible if you have a preference.
Most trails today believe only moderately in glades or surprises with bodywork. Their 19-inch front wheel also betrays this compromise between road and earth. This is not the case with the 790 Adventure, opening in front of it with a 21-inch wheel. The step is closed with 18 inches. Let’s check the circles … No ambiguity: spoked rims and Avon Trailrider tread tires mean that the shoes on this machine will allow it more spacewalks than the competition. In the right proportions; to go further, more off-road, the R version has studded gums and a large suspension travel.
Superior to that of our Adventure here, yet already properly equipped with 200 mm of sliding front and rear. With 23 cm of ground clearance, it is not on the first pebble that she will break the hoof. WP being unhooked from Austrian machines, it provides the inverted 43 mm fork and the shock absorber, without adjustment for one and that of the preload for the other. The wheelbase of 1509 mm should promote stability. But if the driving gets nervous, a steering damper will help calm the reactions of the front end. All of this is held by a tubular trellis frame, with the engine as the supporting element. As for braking, it is provided by 4-piston calipers with two 320 mm discs and ABS monitoring..
But not a simple ABS. The Bosch 9.1MP version, with active cornering function and possible rear deactivation when attacking off-road. Multi-stage ABS is almost standard now, as is a good set of driver aids. What’s on the Adventure? Traction control, 4 driving modes including one off-road, 5-inch color TFT screen, ride-by-wire. Plus a few options such as cruise control, shifter, connectivity with a smartphone and a Rally Pack to unlock Rally mode as well as adjust traction-control.
Good surprise on the weight side, which manages to contain itself at 189 kilos. To get an idea, it’s about halfway between an old KLX 250 and a 650 V-Strom. Even the saddle height is correct, although a little leg effort will be required.
With this 790 Adventure, we feel a confirmation from the side of the privateers in the forest. The machine comes to fuck the box between the excursions and the 750/850 GS, 800 Tiger, 700 Tenere, etc … Lack more than a 390 Adventure and everyone will find hikes to their measure.
