2020 brings ASC traction control as standard on the Urban G / S … as on all NineTs elsewhere. The Heritage gradually enriched itself in electronics. Previously, in 2019, the most retro of trails wins a small electronic bonus, the Dynamic brake light. Its range of colors opened up an excursion into the ‘Spezial’ department to display a distinctly marked personalization. It thus secures its ground, where no one dares to follow suit.
Since the trails have become maxi, they have taken a strategic place in the hearts of riders and backpackers. And each time the R 1200 GS is cited in one way or another. La Gelande / Straße – Cornerstone of the category that it invented, moreover, almost 40 years ago with the R 80 G / S. It was making 50 horsepower at the time, winning Dakar races, and paving the way for a new generation of motorcycles. Today, rather than declining yet another tribute series, BMW has decided to recreate the 80 G / S with its now famous neo-retro base, the NineT. And the result is startling. Propelled in time, the GS plays at traveling between two borders: one cannot say if it is a NineT which has eaten an R 80 G / S or the reverse. The fusion is called R NineT Urban G / S and sends sand back to our nostrils.
Style side, it’s nickel. The nostalgia effect plays its part because BMW has been able to highlight the key elements. The red seat of the first model, the white dress embellished with the blue tones of Bavaria, the unmistakable curved duckbill, the nose screen inspired by the 1000 GS and the gussets protecting the fork tubes. Just add the big square flashes and we believe it.
Suddenly, one would easily think that the manufacturer has designed a brand new machine, greatly enriching the Heritage range. It is not quite that. Although the silhouette is certainly striking, the undersides reveal a NineT Scrambler dressed in enduro sauce. A bit like the Racer which is the sport version of the same Scrambler. One base, several philosophies. What makes it possible to satisfy the fashions and the thrills without spending years of development there. It pleases, and that’s the main thing.
Too bad, really a pity that spoked wheels fitted with studded tires are optional. Certainly, very few owners will go wandering in the stones; but for the look, it’s the icing and the cream on the cake. The Urban G / S pays little attention to this kind of remark. She already sees beautiful walks to the melody of her big flat twin.
Known, even widely known, he is the last child of an air-cooled engine line. What corresponds better to the philosophy of the machine than a boiler with hoses, radiator and all the bataclan. With 1170 cc of displacement and the technology of the previous decade adapted to today’s standards, it has character and character. The Urban G / S advances at the rate of 110 horsepower obtained at 7750 rpm. The torque reached at 6000 revs its maximum of 11.8 mkg. As for the speed, it can be pushed up to 8000 trs if necessary; but we won’t need it. This 1200 Urban G / S will be appreciated by rolling and winding, not by scouring.
There was already a single-sided gimbal on the R 80 G / S, the Monolever. The tradition continues on all R models, but obviously with a technical gap. The Urban G / S accommodates the essential Paralever to connect the Boxer to the rear wheel, then is built around a tubular frame in three parts: the front section, the rear section, and the passenger frame. The fork is a classic 43mm model with 2 piston calipers. Far from the fork derived from the S 1000 RR that the standard NineT reserves; but would this sporty front end be fashionable on this neo-vintage-enduro-heritage? ?!?
Moreover, this G / S intends to afford some paths. For this, it carries a 19-inch front wheel and offers a little more suspension travel. The damping slides over 125 mm at the front and 140 mm at the rear on the Urban G / S; respectively 120/120 on the NineT.
The braking has something to be convincing, with discs of 320 mm at the front and one of 265 mm at the rear, suppressed by the ABS. For added safety, ASC traction control is available as an option..
A trail must be simple and uncluttered. The Urban G / S comes close enough but cannot match the slim look (seen today) of the 80. For the instrumentation, it is successful. The simple all-round counter is satisfied with a needle for speed. For the rest, a small digital window provides onboard information. When it comes to driving, don’t go wrong: it’s a NineT, not a GS of yesteryear. Between the stumps, it’s twice the power, 40 kilos more, and a roadster that smells of off-road, not who practices it. Question charm, impossible to remain insensitive. The concept ‘Lac Rose’ presented in early 2016 left no doubt when the arrival of this R NineT Urban G / S. Those who kept a poster of the Dakar with Thierry Sabine and Hubert Auriol can now put it back in the garage, and believe that this bike came out.
