Ducati Monster celebrates 25th anniversary

Liberation blow against full shuttering

The Ducati Monster had shown it to these high-end super athletes, had become a top model and saved the company. In 2018 it will celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Before 1993 it was actually the case that you wanted to do this or that with a motorcycle and therefore chose this or this model. So one asked whether 600 or 1000 cubic meters corresponded to his sporting spirit, the other asked whether one or two cylinders would fit the Sahara. Bargain hunters found their luck with Japanese, show talent with American twins. Then came the D.ucati monster. Nobody asked anymore, and there was no better luck.

On the occasion of the 25th Monster anniversary, the new Ducati Monster 821 in the 2018 model year is not only available in red and black but also in historical yellow.

From a technical point of view, it represented a collection of interesting peculiarities with a 90-degree V2 installed transversely, two desmodromic valves and tubular space frames, but when you saw it, even qualified engineers forgot how old this Bolognese Trinity was back then – with a used 900 engine and a stripped-down one 851 chassis: first L-Twin in the 750 GT from 1970, Desmo debut in 1956 at the Swedish GP with the Trialbero 125, tubular space in series in 1979 with the SL 500 Pantah.

Normally something like this is greeted with “old wine in new bottles”, but in the spring of 1993 everyone knelt down and thanked the brothers Castiglioni – at that time owners of Cagiva and Ducati – for the benefits they had given. Golden upside-down fork and oval muffler were revered like relics, even the missing tachometer found admirers, and the craziest thing is: everyone, really everyone was right. The Ducati Monster was the optical liberation against full casing and honesty, it was: the motorcycle contribution to the design language of a late industrial society.

First they wanted to push the project to Cagiva, and when Castiglioni refused, they would build 1,000 of them. And finally, at the IFMA 1992 in Cologne, the whole world cheered, and the production quota was increased to 5,000 pieces.

Ducati

In the December 1993 issue of MOTORRAD-Test the conclusion was: “The Ducati is a motorcycle that a biker’s buttocks, legs and wrists would like. The great strength of the light 900 series lies in its pronounced handiness, its greatest weakness is evident in the fork. “

The technical data from the first test from MOTORRAD issue 12, year 1993.

Regarding the driving report of the new Ducati Monster 821 (model year 2018), the tester writes: “Only release the brake (Brembo radial brake calipers) shortly before the apex, enjoy the tire’s not too strong deployment moment, and swab the pitted asphalt with a boot Say hello, pull the ride-by-wire handle vigorously at the exit of the curve and let the two-cylinder stomp up the speed ladder again. Lovely! With a cheeky V2 staccato from the new, angularly accentuated rear silencer, the new Monster shoots forward with commitment and already runs well below 3,000 tours. “

The new Ducati Monster 821 is available in the 2018 model year, on the occasion of the 25th Monster anniversary, in red and black as well as in historical yellow.
