Sexy: Up until then, hardly any motorcycle tail had that much charisma. Seat, chrome bar, duck tail and taillight blend harmoniously into a classically beautiful image.

Grumpy: The four slide carburetors feed the double ocher enough. With 79 hp it was at the beginning of its development in 1972, later it grew and strengthened to 1100 cc and over 100 hp.

Perfect forms that you rarely find. Slim tank, high handlebars, pretty spoked wheels and probably the most beautiful exhaust system of all time. A worthy dream bike, then as now.

Dream bike election 2014, 4th place: Kawasaki 900 Z1
One of the most beautiful motorcycles of all time
One of the most beautiful motorcycles of all time, once a monster of power and danger: the Kawasaki 900 Z1 – Frankenstein‘s daughter, as it was called by MOTORRAD – still impresses today with a line that current designers would like to find. And thus lands in fourth place in the 2014 dream bike election.
Hardly any machine before and only a few after it struck it Kawasaki 900 Z1 a. At IFMA 1972, the predecessor of today’s INTERMOT, motorcycle fans rubbed their eyes in amazement: 903 cm³, 79 hp, top 230 km / h, how, please, should you control this monster? MOTORRAD tester Franz-Josef Schermer tried it later. And gave her the nickname Frankenstein’s daughter, which is still valid today. With its top speed of 217 km / h, the 900 had pulled his arms out quite a bit – and in terms of driving stability, it really taught him to fear.
Frankenstein’s daughter still enchants today with its incomparable appearance. The slim drop tank, the inimitably long rear rump, this monument of an air-cooled row of four – a motorcycle could hardly be more beautiful. In addition, these four lovingly curved, chrome-plated mufflers nestle against the Kawasaki 900 Z1. Just glorious how they sparkle in the sun, freshly polished.
Kawasaki 900 Z1 was hell on wheels
And how they sound! Dull growling in idle, dirty barking up to mid-speed, greedily screaming up to the limit at a good 9000 rpm. The twin-cam engine with roller bearings has nothing to do with today’s four-cylinder engines. It starts with the square stroke-bore ratio of 66 millimeters each and does not end with the four 28-gauge slide carburetors that seem puny nowadays. What was hell on wheels 42 years ago is now something for a leisurely trip with friends. The first-class seating position with the comfortably high handlebars can be perfectly enjoyed, as can the rich pulling power and the perfect performance of the grumpy four-wheeler. Thanks to the wide sail pole, the Kawasaki 900 Z1 even looks really handy.
The worst bad habits can be cured with modern tires. Franz would certainly have had a lot of fun and would never have come on the Frankenstein trip. More like the famous wolf in sheep’s clothing. Because thanks to contemporary adhesion promoters, the Kawasaki 900 Z1 is fed up and takes the roads under its wheels, greedily. Even the ground clearance is enough to turn corners rather cheekily.

Doesn’t really brake by today’s standards
Still, she doesn’t like bumps. The jerky fork rumbles over it, and unrest comes from the rear wheel into the framework. And you don’t want to have to do a shock braking with the somewhat lost-looking single-disc brake in the front wheel. Where: Actually, with the Kawasaki 900 Z1, every braking turns into a shock braking, because the 900 does not really brake by today’s standards. Many have retrofitted a second disc over time. Our copy is almost perfectly original. That’s why we roll back grumbling, but rather comfortably, and are happy about this wonderful machine that once taught the world fear.
