Has been around for a long time and therefore a lot of experience: the SL 750 Shiver is rightly Aprilia’s best-selling bike. In the test, it surprises with an excellent chassis, improved throttle response and good handling.

I would never go to Bavaria in my life! But why not? The harmonious chassis tuning, the potent in-line twin and the low fuel consumption speak for the BMW. The ergonomics, the mediocre sound and the high price are rather less.

It all depends on the interaction, and this is where the Honda can score: good ergonomics for driver and pillion, stable and easy-turning four-cylinder, inconspicuous chassis. In processing and steering behavior, however, there is still a need for training.

Who do moderate mid-range motorcycles with 90 hp lure away from the TV chair during a soccer World Cup? This comparison test explains why the four naked bikes Honda CB 650 F, Ducati Monster 796, Aprilia SL 750 Shiver and BMW F 800 R still have what it takes to be cheered in the fan curve.

D.he German men’s national soccer team has become world champion, the first round of the DFB Cup has been completed and the first national soccer league is already in the starting blocks. Even after the World Cup, many fans are affected by soccer fever. Cute flags are tucked into the car window and the motorcycle is disregarded despite constant sunshine? Never mind, because now is the opportunity.

For 1000-point customizing for MOTORCYCLE HEROES

Honda CB 650 F.

The Honda CB 650 F is the cheapest candidate in the test field.

The new Honda CB 650 F definitely brings a breath of fresh air to the middle class – even if the key data of the Japanese naked bike does not suggest a superior march against the opponents Ducati Monster 796, Aprilia SL 750 Shiver and BMW F 800 R. With a displacement of 649 cubic centimeters distributed over four cylinders in line, measured 89 hp and 65 Newton meters, nobody would be afraid. But be careful: if you underestimate your opponent in advance, you may lose out on the field. Anyone who gets on the Honda immediately feels this feeling of arrival. Everything fits together here: the knee angle is not too acute, the knee joint is not too wide, the handlebars at the optimal height – the CB is not only bearable, it could also be used until the final game.

A range of a sensational 402 kilometers with just one tank of the 17.3-liter fuel barrel makes it possible. The 212 kilograms of the 650s are comfortably compact in the steel bridge frame, which is why the Honda CB 650 F does not strain the driver either in the city or when driving overland. Accurately and playfully, you wag the Honda through honking car corsos and benefit from lively handling despite the moderate chassis geometry. Left past, right past, right through: You are promptly on pole position at the next set of traffic lights. But then it is time to pay attention. Because only the clutch could spoil the urban sprint duel with the evil-looking Mercedes driver. As with the machine that took part in the top test, the clutch engages very spontaneously. So either you drive off the traffic light with too much gas, or you choke the Japanese woman off. Both are embarrassing – and neither should they be for a Honda motorcycle.

Delicacies for four-cylinder fans

Complete production takes place in Thailand

The same applies to the gearbox. Because gear shifts and bony gear changes are by no means foreign to the 650. The gear ratio, which is finely graduated to the four-cylinder, cannot hide this. Accordingly, one cannot completely avoid the thought that all of this could have something to do with the new production facility in Thailand. This is where the complete production of the Honda CB 650 F takes place. However, you have to hold the manufacturer accountable for negligence such as decorative stickers that have not been painted over on the tank and side panels. Well, moaned enough. The newly developed engine gives little cause for criticism apart from strong vibrations from medium speeds. The moderately short-stroke engine makes it easy for beginners and professionals alike to immediately make friends with the little Honda. The four-cylinder hangs well on the gas and acknowledges every turn of the whisk with spontaneous and jolt-free propulsion.

From 3000 tours, the heart really comes to life, pushes forward vigorously up to 5000 revolutions and then pulls with verve in the direction of the rev limiter. Despite the smallest displacement, it is not difficult for the Honda CB 650 F to keep up with the competition. However, she does not succeed in driving them away. Nevertheless: The timing, which is designed for more torque at low and medium speeds, has a positive effect in practice. Likewise, the tight basic setup of the chassis. Both the directly hinged shock absorber and the non-adjustable telescopic fork keep the Honda safely on track, even on bumpy terrain. And because of the good feedback and the perfectly harmonizing Metzeler Z8 Interact (special specification “F”), the 650 turns pretty quickly around the corner. The Ducati Monster 796 has to do some magic to keep up with the pace. You have to accept that the suspension comfort of the Honda is not a hit and the steering behavior is not absolutely neutral. Also that the brakes decelerate properly, but do not come close to the high level of the BMW F 800 R, for example. But the Honda also costs a whopping 2200 euros less than this and is the cheapest of the quartet at 7955 euros. But whether that is enough in the end to keep the F 800 R from the next championship?

BMW F 800 R.

The BMW can be thrown very precisely in an inclined position and then rushes through the curve as if on rails.

If you want to force the BMW F 800 R to a standstill, you should at least press your legs firmly against the narrow dummy tank. The four-piston fixed calipers bite into the two 320 mm discs with such vehemence that you can redefine the braking points on the home route. This is where the roadster driver feels most at home. As already criticized when it was published in 2009, when you are 1.80 meters tall you sit pretty folded up on the BMW. An extended tour can become an ordeal. If you sit upright and actively on the R with your upper body, the acute knee angle leads to the orthopedic surgeon in the long run. It is a bit strange that the people of Munich have never changed anything about that. Because beyond that, you can only chalk the parallel twin with 798 cubic a little.

Compared to the Honda CB 650 F, the BMW F 800 R not only plays in a higher league in terms of price (10,300 euros including accessories and ancillary costs), but above all in terms of the engine and the chassis. The BMW can be thrown very precisely in an inclined position and then rushes through the curve as if on rails. Motorcycling can be so easy! The F 800 R is initially noticeable at slow speed with a somewhat wobbly straight-line stability. This peculiarity must be due to the standard steering damper. Because as soon as you give the two-cylinder, which has 94 hp well in the forage, a lot of tinder, the blunt poking mutates into a scalpel-like cut. Over time, you catch yourself bending more diagonally from curve to curve and cocking the tap earlier and earlier in order to increase the distance to the competitors. Hach, there is nothing like a neutral steering behavior and good lean angle!

BMW engine with a slight advantage over the competition

But the BMW F 800 R also shows its limits. And unfortunately quite spontaneously. Once again entered the corner at a slight angle, the front wheel suddenly begins to fold in. Only thanks to a quick reaction from the driver can the bike build up cornering forces again at the last second. Phew, lucky! The feedback from the front wheel should be more transparent so that you can better feel the limit area of the Metzeler M5 tire. You don’t have to let it get that far. The BMW engine not only gains an advantage over the Honda CB 650 F, but also over its roughly identical competitors, the Ducati Monster 796 and Aprilia SL 750 Shiver.

From 2500 rpm, the twin pushes the 212 kilogram BMW F 800 R forward with at least 70 Newton meters on the crankshaft and pumps its maximum of 88 Newton meters towards the rear wheel at just under 6000 revolutions. The competition is clearly left behind. Only on slow, winding stretches can the pack regain ground on the 800s. In terms of handling, the Bavarian does not play in the Champions League. And you have to get used to the gritty gear. In the future, BMW should rather use the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver in the parts shelf, which does not want to disappear from the rear-view mirrors of the F 800 R..

Aprilia SL 750 Shiver

As soon as you sit down, the Shiver gives you the feeling that life is just a little easier with it.

There are good reasons for that. Because the bestseller from the Italian manufacturer comes out of the cabin unexpectedly motivated for this test. Is it because of the new soling? For the first time, the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver rolls up on Pirelli Angel ST. So get on the bench and try it out! As soon as you sit down, the Shiver gives you the feeling that life is just a little easier with it. This is largely due to the great ergonomics, which, due to the seat height of at least 830 millimeters, should especially please people from 1.70 meters. With only slightly bent legs and an upright upper body, you not only sit comfortably, but also sufficiently active in the saddle.

With rattling intake noises from the airbox and a gently bubbling V2 sound, the 750 cubic engine promptly reports that it is ready for service. But before you start, you should definitely insert the touring mapping. Only in this does the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver shine with buttery smooth throttle response and reduced load change reactions, so that the driver can concentrate fully on the road. Rain and sport mapping can therefore be safely neglected.

Driving report: Aprilia

Aprilia SL 750 Shiver

The Aprilia cannot deny a slight stoppie tendency

The clutch is not particularly easy to operate, but it has a clear engagement point. Another gentle click and the first gear of the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver is engaged. With a little less thrust than the BMW F 800 R and the Ducati Monster 796, the 225 kilo heaviest motorcycle in the test starts moving. Accompanied by bassy expressions of life from the underseat exhaust system, the V2 merrily grinds its way through the rev range from 3000 tours, continuously increases its power and manages to generate 70 Newton meters on the crankshaft between 7000 and 8500 revolutions. The Aprilia, in combination with the Pirelli tires, turns into a formidable corner scraper, which is not overly manageable, but stable and absolutely precise through the curves. And where you should slowly think about braking before the next bend on the Honda CB 650 F or the Ducati Monster 796, you can still leave the gas on the Aprilia and first have to anchor where the BMW goes into iron.

In terms of braking action and dosage, the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver can absolutely hold a candle to the BMW F 800 R. But the thing has a stale aftertaste: The Aprilia cannot deny a slight stubborn tendency. Especially during braking maneuvers in downhill sections, you shouldn’t put the screw clamp handle on the brake lever at the very last second. To reduce the Aprilia to its athletic skills alone would not do it justice. It is also ideal for cruising, and the sum of its properties is best within the test field. The sensitively appealing, yet tightly damping spring elements make the journey so comfortable that you don’t even miss the TV armchair at home. The Shiver simply turns on, drives great and is also finely processed. Since the price remains within the range of 9276 euros, you can forgive her the highest consumption of just acceptable 4.7 liters. Low fuel consumption has never been a particular virtue of the Italians.

Ducati Monster 796

The Monster wants to be led with a hard hand and demands taker qualities from the driver in many ways.

This also applies to the Ducati Monster 796. It treats itself to just 0.1 liters less than the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver. But beyond the fuel consumption, the difference to the Shiver could hardly be greater. The Monster wants to be led with a hard hand and demands taker qualities from the driver in many ways. Even starting with the 190 kilogram bike requires maximum concentration. The clutch, which is equipped with an anti-hopping function, is even more difficult to dose than that of the Honda. In addition, it grabs powerfully when cold and makes starting at low speed completely impossible. Once you get going, you should avoid speeds below 3000 tours completely.

Because until then, the air-cooled two-valve engine is hacking relentlessly on the chain and makes meeting the targeted line extremely tricky. If you want to keep up with the competition in the winding curve, you have to keep the monsters under constant tension. From 4500 revolutions the Desmo-Twin is in a good mood, thunders powerfully out of the two high-positioned rear silencers and puts a strong shovel on top. In the end, the test bench run attests 80 Newton meters and 87 hp – that’s definitely enough for the country road. And that’s where the Ducati Monster 796 belongs too. In the city it may attract a lot of attention with its masculine sound and fine single-sided swing arm, but with the handlebars positioned too low it puts a strain on the wrists in the long run. And the knee angle should also be a bit more generous for long stages. But so be it!

Equipped with ABS, the Monster costs 10,295 euros

Anyone who has come to terms with the seating position and understood the engine characteristics can look forward to the nimble handling of the Ducati Monster 796. Thanks to its low weight, it can be turned quickly from left to right and can stalk the competitors again in alternating curves. However, this only applies if the driver is brave. Because on the one hand the feedback from the front tire is not transparent, on the other hand the monster hits the gearshift lever and the notches comparatively early.

It’s a bit of a shame, because both the upside-down fork and the spring strut, which can be adjusted in preload and rebound, make a decent impression. Oh well. She is just not the youngest anymore, and her successor is already scratching her feet. The fact that the new Ducati Monster 821 then gets the water-cooled V2 engine from the Hypermotard could be a clear selling point for the old one for some fans of air cooling. Equipped with ABS, the Ducati Monster 796 currently costs an impressive 10,295 euros and thus just as much as the much better equipped BMW F 800 R..

Performance measurement

Power on the crankshaft. Measurements on the Dynojet roller test stand 250, corrected according to 95/1 / EG, maximum possible deviation ± 5%.

One look at the performance diagram and it becomes clear: Even within the 90 hp middle class, there are worlds between the individual candidates. As expected, the Honda CB 650 F falls significantly behind the competition in terms of torque due to its smallest displacement and the engine concept. In contrast to the BMW F 800 R and Ducati Monster 796, the four-cylinder shines with a more harmonious power delivery.

As in previous measurements, the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver does not achieve the nominal output specified by the manufacturer. You are missing a proud nine horsepower and eight Newton meters. Apart from that, the V2 pushes forward evenly from 3000 tours and hardly loses any torque at the top. The curve of the Desmo-V2 of the Ducati Monster 796 and the parallel win of the BMW F 800 R are very similar in their course – only that the F 800 R always has five to ten Newton meters more on the crankshaft. The small hole around 4500 tours is hardly noticeable on both motorcycles. The fact that the BMW trumps its nominal output by seven horsepower can only please the customer.

Their drives are as different as the motorcycles. The four-cylinder of the Honda CB 650 F is pleasing on the whole, but its strong vibrations from 5000 revs upwards are annoying on long stages. The V2 of the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver is extremely well-mannered, as it hangs smoothly on the gas (T-Mapping) and runs very smoothly. Quite different: the V2 of the Ducati Monster 796.

MOTORCYCLE test results

Flower picking motorcycles? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! Everyone in this back four can also switch to storm!

In the end, the BMW F 800 R once again manages to show no nakedness in any category. And since, as in football, it all comes down to the points in the end, BMW emerges as the clear winner. But if you are at war with the Munich-based company, you will find two alternatives, both the high-quality Aprilia SL 750 Shiver and the Honda CB 650 F, which are more attractive in terms of price and almost on par with BMW in terms of quality. Well, if that’s no reason to finally get on a moped!

1. BMW F 800 R: In the end, the Bayern Roadster rightly wins. The powerful two-cylinder in connection with the stable and precise chassis makes it impossible for the competitors to stick to the BMW.

2. Aprilia SL 750 Shiver: In this test, it surprises with its excellent steering behavior, great stability and good throttle response. In addition, it scores with comfortable ergonomics and the famous V2 sound.

3. Honda CB 650 F: The newcomer in the 90 hp class delivers a solid performance in all respects. However, it is not enough for victory. When it comes to clutch, transmission and workmanship, the Japanese woman from Thailand makes mistakes.

4. Ducati Monster 796: It is available for replacement and still exudes its air-cooled charm. The rustic V2, the inharmonious steering behavior and the erection moment prevent better placement.
