Standing noise: Is not limited by law, but is part of the homologation and is also specifically specified on the motorcycle nameplate, for example.

Driving noise: Euro 4 bikes have become quieter on paper.

Of course, Euro 4 systems can still be converted into a pure “racing system” with just a few screw movements. Anyone who does it anyway drives without an operating permit: a fine of 50 euros!

In this test there were no assembly problems with any of the slip-on dampers.

5 candidates in the comparison test
Since Euro 4, stricter regulations also apply to exhaust systems. It’s high time to give the MOTORRAD exhaust test a thorough overhaul. With a BMW R nineT Urban G / S, we are daring the new approach. Five silencers undergoing a tough performance and noise check.

If we take a close look at the MOTORRAD exhaust tests of the past few years, two things in particular can be stated as a fixed rule. First: No accessory silencer can offer a real increase in performance. The times when another slip-on muffler really increased the power are long gone. Huge front silencers and flap controls ensure that there is hardly anything that can be influenced from the rear. Second: The legally permissible limit values are regularly exceeded – sometimes very clearly, depending on the provider. Now the whole procedure has not been simplified in the course of Euro 4, on the contrary, even stricter sound level values apply.
Which is why we made an elaborate criss-cross comparison last year with a BMW R 1200 GS in Euro 3 and Euro 4 versions (see issue 26/2017): The Euro 3 bike measured according to Euro 4 and that Of course, the other way round too. Conclusion: Although the Euro 4-GS is quieter on paper, in practice it is just as loud (or quiet) as its Euro 3 sister, depending on the measurement method. For us, this is a reason not to measure the extremely cryptic Euro 4 decibel aria in the future. A mundane re-testing of the norm makes little sense.
We want to proceed differently for our MOTORCYCLE exhaust tests in the future, we introduced something similar for the MOTORCYCLE helmet test many years ago. From our point of view, it makes more sense to use a test method that is relevant to everyday life.
This MOTORCYCLE noise measurement method is now celebrating its premiere in the exhaust test on the BMW R nineT Urban G / S. In the following article we describe exactly how it looks. The basic rule is: All test systems must be homologated for the test motorcycle – which can also be traced back to the labeling requirement. How loud (or quiet) they actually are: That is an essential part of our test procedure.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfying
This is how MOTORRAD tests
A lot has been a regular practice for years, but with the change from Euro 3 to Euro 4 we have thoroughly reconsidered the noise measurement process. These are the test points for the new MOTORRAD exhaust test.
Out and about on the test bench and test track. We do not need to shake the type of performance appraisal. As always, every accessory system first moves to the MOTORRAD test bench in order to be able to assess the kW / HP output and the course of the torque curve in the tried and tested form. The test crew continued to focus on: assembly, fit and quality of workmanship. We have seen a significant increase in quality here in recent years. Almost all accessory pots win on the scales: insulation wool is lighter than the reflection chamber principle of the original parts. Our noise measurement method contains a mix of old and new. The principle of stationary noise measurement at half the nominal speed at a distance of 50 centimeters and at a 45-degree angle is not shaken. Anyone who exceeds the manufacturer’s specification receives point deductions. In terms of driving noise, we assess the city noise based on Euro 3 on the one hand, which we determine when pulling through from second and third gear at 50 km / h on a 20-meter-long test track. On the other hand, we check the maximum driving noise as “Environmental checkpoint”, which is calculated from the average of four drives past in second gear shortly before the vehicle’s rev limiter was activated.
Conclusion
The hit parade of the MOTORRAD testers:
Jorg “Dr. Music” Lohse (48): A really difficult decision with this compact test field. Every sound has something special, even the original Urban pot turns on. My favorites: 1. Hattech Oyk 2. Akrapovic Slip-On HP-Line
Tobias “The Voice” Wassermann (43): Phew, they are close together, all of them nice and fat and heavy on bass. But if someone stands out with a special note, it’s Zard. If I were 25, then: 1. Zard High Limited Version 2. Akrapovic Slip-On HP-Line
