Performance: The times when the top performance increased brutefully with accessory pots are long gone. That applies once more to this test.

Sound: Meanwhile the main argument for upgrading: more bass, please! If you want to hear that in comparison: www.motorradonline.de/auspuff.

15/21
Driving noise: The legally relevant limit value is very low. Despite the existing homologation, all accessories are covered by us.
Jorg Lohse
16/21
Standing noise: There are no legally relevant requirements here. The F 800 R has 89 dB (A) in the papers. Most of them do.
Jorg Lohse
17/21
Weight: Original parts usually have many reflection chambers and are accordingly heavy. Accessory pots with insulating wool are very light.

Marking: register, take documents with you? No, it is sufficient that the type approval is clearly visible on the accessory exhaust.

Accessory silencer for the BMW F 800 R in a comparison test
The ultimate end pot?
Dear MOTORRAD helpline, is there the ultimate silencer for my BMW F 800 R? That sounds fat. That looks sharp. Who really has a boom. And which the race management agrees to be mild. Let’s take a look around: seven accessory silencers compared to the original from BMW.

Let’s start at the beginning with the end. Because that’s close. Euro 4 will apply to new motorcycles in just a few months. From January 2017 at the latest, a new noise directive will apply. In the future it will be said: become even quieter! The current maximum of 80 decibels (A) during driving will then become 77. Sounds like tough stuff – especially when you look at the very high measured values of all the systems in the test on the following pages.

On the other hand: In the new guideline, the specifications for the measurement method are also fundamentally reorganized. So far, the (legally relevant) driving noise has been determined according to a uniform standard, regardless of whether the motorcycle has 60 or 160 hp. With the new guideline, however, there is no longer a single brush. The specifications for gear selection, constant speed and acceleration result from the performance data of the respective motorcycle. In this respect, it remains to be seen whether new motorcycles will actually, i.e. audibly, be three decibels quieter in the future – or whether this value is only mathematically lower. That is why we, too, are excited to see which numbers will light up on the display of our phonometer during our first exhaust test in 2017.
Only with the original system within the legal limit?
But now back to the present. Now let’s take a look at the current exhaust test for the BMW F 800 R, in which everything runs again according to a form that has been known for decades. Which doesn’t mean it’s easier now. In our series of measurements, the F 800 R only stays within the legal limit with the original system. Although, according to the enclosed documents, every accessory system from this test is of course certified by various testing organizations from Luxembourg, Ireland, Spain or Germany that it complies with the limit values. Officially correct, with letter and seal. As a customer and buyer, you can of course rely on that.
Further actual values from the test: All accessory pots are significantly lighter than the original. But that is no wonder either. Because from the factory there are usually lush silencers with baggy reflection chambers at the manifold outlet. That is a huge part of the weight.
How does that sound now??
The accessories industry usually focuses on absorption dampers that are stuffed with sound-absorbing insulation wool. Lightweight construction as it is in the book. At this point, however, it should not be forgotten that the fibers burn up in the long run. So at some point it will be necessary to refill or replace the rear silencer.
Anyone who thinks that a new peak in terms of horsepower can be expected with the repotting campaign will soberly take note of the performance output of all seven challengers. As a little consolation, however, a look at the torque curves: In the middle, the Bayern twin now pulls much more forcefully – which is much more noticeable in practice on the country road than a relatively abstract high score value on the test bench role. The final question remains: how does that sound? The MOTORRAD DJs have chosen their favorites, but it’s better to hear for yourself in the following video.

Camera? Runs! Volume? Is there. What print can’t do, our digitalos deliver: online it’s on your ears.
Performance and noise are the objective measurement criteria for the exhaust test. Everyone (tester and reader) is only allowed to form his or her personal opinion when it comes to sound.
The first trip leads directly to the photo studio. The systems are screwed directly out of the box onto the test bike and photographed for the magazine. Desired side effect: the assessment of the processing quality and accuracy of fit. Chief mechanic Stefan Gluck from the MOTORRAD test pool has already got bloody fingers on some systems and knows exactly where things usually get stuck. Then it goes to the test. Experience has shown that hardly any system adds a decent briquette when it comes to top performance – on the contrary.
Some even remained below the standard performance. Nevertheless, there is good news to report from the role of the F 800 R: In the medium speed range, all accessory pots increase significantly. And you can really feel that on the country road. But: where there is light, there is also shadow. This is shown when the stationary and driving noises are determined based on the legally relevant directive 97/24 / EC. In our measurements, only the original part from BMW complies with the legally relevant driving noise level of 80 dB (A). Some of the accessory pots are significantly higher and lose points accordingly. Purely subjective and without any influence on the rating: the sound check.
MOTORCYCLE final scoring
MOTORCYCLE final evaluation of the accessories silencer test.
In this exhaust test, we tightened the thumbscrews and shifted the weighting significantly in the direction of stationary and driving noises. This is an anticipation of Euro 4 and the stricter limit values that will apply from 2017. Thus, the balance sheet for the suppliers of retrofit silencers for the BMW F 800 R is mixed. No silencer manages it “very well”, more than half is only “satisfactory”. Will the picture change from next year? We are skeptical …
