An ode to the wasteland

With big enduros on an adventure search in the wasteland of stony desert landscapes. Where space and time are lost in nothing.

Can we do anytime ?? if we want to
would. Mobile freedom is now defined in the subjunctive. For example, through the many martially equipped off-road vehicles with which civilized Central Europeans drive their way through the traffic jams of the big cities to work every day. Huge bull catchers, the coarsest tires and maximum ground clearance
suggest: The world is limitless. Barriers, obstacles? Just put away, there is no limit. In reality-
But the bumper of the car in front sets the speed
first limit. Likewise, the Marlboro-Man wants us
cool face, the cigarette casually in the corner of your mouth, rides through Utah’s canyons that sell unlimited freedom. Obviously, it only exists in commercials, threatened with illusions
and symbols to stifle.
However, everyone has the chance to get out of this game. Take advantage of the opportunities, the advertising industry also tells us that. This is exactly what many motorcyclists do for their own
Machine is not simply a status symbol or an object of prestige.
Isn’t motorcycling basically a little escape too? Whereby the chance to escape has something to do with distance: the further away, the easier it is to leave everyday life behind. Away from the crowds of our well-organized world, away from the concreted cities, out into the great outdoors. Which, however, is usually quite overcrowded in Central Europe. Many find peace and seclusion in distant destinations, especially the most inhospitable, deserted areas exert a magical attraction.
We’re standing on a mountain, somewhere far south, that
Sun at the zenith burns us mercilessly on our backs. At least 40 degrees in the shade, which you look for in vain. The view sweeps over a magnificent landscape. An overwhelming sight. No asphalt, no house, no one to the horizon. A landscape full of magic: the colorful monotony, the deafening silence, the variety of
Wasteland. How did we get here? swam over it,
it was a long, restless journey. Now we are almost waiting for us
as a reward this endless expanse of the desert. Space, space. For thoughts, fantasies. A goal for the day is easy to set: it should go there, to the horizon, into the unknown.
Our machines give us this freedom: with gross
Tires, long-stroke suspension and robust construction ideally prepared for adventure tours. Resilient staff
of course provided. One of the parties: the author, already restless and restless and almost permanently on the run. Stefan, grateful as a tester of the sister newspaper »Roller Spezial«
for every alternative to its usually urban restricted test areas; and finally Norbert, who, as the full-time chief physician, does the moderately rewarded temporary jobs at MOTORRAD, hardly as a salary increase, but rather as a counterpoint to the
Everyday stress uses.
First, the path meanders through a gigantic wadi, a completely dry river bed, towards the mountains. Flat full throttle passages are interrupted by suddenly appearing furrows or deep sand deposits. The energy,
lust has to go. Full capacity, ex-crosser Norbert is in his element here on the KTM. The tightly coordinated Adventure pulls its course, the narrow 21-inch front wheel cuts through the soft ground. We, the two following, not only have to swallow the plume of dust, but also struggle with the deep grooves that the aggressive KTM engine has cut into the ground with the coarse-treaded Metzeler Karoo. Norbert squints at the speedometer: at over 130 km / h through the scree. Ouch, you shouldn’t leave here in the middle of nowhere.
For us drivers behind us, the dust is gradually settling,
Norbert is miles ahead. Aprilia and BMW can never keep up with this hellish pace. But finally
if the journey is the goal, let us console ourselves. The problem in the
Sand passages is just: the slower you drive, the stronger our loads. Especially since both machines with loaded suitcases are a good 50 kilos more than those for transport tasks
Put the exempted KTM on the scales. Stefan meets with it
the Aprilia particularly hard. It looks even more sedate,
although really lighter than the BMW, also top-heavy, unstable.
The classic sand recipe ?? always gas, always speed ??
just doesn’t want to work. The front wheel does not get into a stable gliding phase on the sand surface, wild rolling escapades are programmed. Stefan is plentiful
stressed, makes many an involuntary excursion into the
Botany. The BMW can do that much better, although it also has a 19-inch front wheel.
It is in the nature of such river beds that they gradually become narrower and wilder in the mountains. After all, the wadi ends somewhere in the void, which forces us to do a trial. Large boulders block the way. Krrrrgg, an ugly sound. The Aprilia scrapes along the rock.
The bulging suitcase on the right gets stuck on a stone ledge and throws Stefan off the track. Especially
The Rimowa container does not look stable, the little slip has damaged it badly. Ever just got
the Italian machine plenty of dents and quirks. The ground clearance is not despite the long-stroke spring elements
lush. The steamer is particularly wide at the bottom. It bangs here, it rattles there. One cares about the one behind that
water and oil tanks and pipes located on thin carbon fiber protection. My BMW is more robust and lasts a lot longer
out. With the Boxer, the ground clearance is also limited, but a massive aluminum plate protects the oil pan properly. Norbert has a completely different problem with the KTM: the seat height
is so big that he can only paddle and paddle on one side. Finally it hits him too, who by then
has trumped so confidently, several times on the side. But without consequences. And he succeeds quite easily, the easy one
Bringing the Austrian back to the vertical.
We reach a plateau, a seemingly endless Llano with sparse vegetation. Cacti, agaves, withered bush alternate. Off the beaten path you should
do not drive here, the arid flora is extremely sensitive. A collection of stately palm trees appears on the horizon like a mirage. An oasis? Water, shade? As we get closer, only the ruins of the building can be seen. Thank goodness we have them in the aluminum cases of the BMW and Aprilia
ample water supplies. The machines handle the heat better. With the KTM, the fan hums constantly, but even the deep sand passages didn’t bring it to a boil. The air-cooled BMW cannot cook,
it radiates all its heat on both sides, grilling my legs at a snail’s pace. Temperatures affect the engine
obviously hard to manage. A pungent smell of
Burned-on clutch linings, however, indicate that a dry clutch can only carry a limited load.
Hours later we come across one with gravel and
Occasional strips of asphalt paved path that winds up and down over a few elevations. We’re pretty exhausted now. Thankful that we can now run the machines with little physical effort. The KTM is not that easy here, the high seat requires getting used to. Likewise the aggressive engine. Enormous power, but little torque from the bottom. Norbert catapults himself wildly out of the curves ?? which also has its very special charm. Admittedly, it is expensive fun, in no time at all
erased the studs of the rear tire. My BMW is of a completely different character, grabs from below with a powerful thrust, yet soft as butter. It’s fantastic to accelerate out of the hairpin bends with well-measured, gentle drifts. The suspension is excellent. If she were a few pounds lighter … Although the Bavarian woman usually manages to hide her pounds.
So we drive through a seemingly endless road until evening,
barren wilderness, don’t get a meter closer to the horizon.
An unforgettable experience. Maybe it’s all just a dream,
Imagination? No, the desert isn’t that far away. We were on the south-eastern tip of Spain north of Almeria, one of the driest areas and the only desert in Europe. The chance to see one of these souped-up Germans there
Gencountering off-road vehicles tends towards zero.
