Airbag compulsory in motorcycle Grand Prix from 2018
Wearing an airbag becomes compulsory in the three categories of motorcycle Grand Prix (Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP) from the 2018 season, in agreement with the three manufacturers who currently provide wireless protection devices: Alpinestars, Dainese and Ixon, in partnership with In & Motion.
"In order to improve the safety of the pilots, the suits must be equipped with an airbag system. This proposal effective from 2018 has been validated by all the suppliers involved", reveals the report of the Grand Prix Commission gathered during the, which also specifies that the modifications affecting the design of the fairings and front fenders will now be limited to "one update" per driver and per season from 2017.
The airbag suppliers in question are Dainese, Alpinestars and In & Motion, a Haute-Savoie company. Thanks to supply agreements, other brands can benefit from their technological advances in their own colors: this is the case in particular for Moto2 riders Johann Zarco and Sam Lowes, whose Furygan suit receives a Dainese airbag. This sharing – obviously paid! – can also be done with the equipment manufacturer Vircos, who dresses Mattia Pasini.
The wireless airbag in motorcycle Grands Prix: 10 years already
Introduced in motorcycle Grand Prix by the wireless airbag has since been enormously improved and democratized. Now, the most efficient systems fully deploy in less than 100 milliseconds after a fall is detected via multiple sensors (accelerometers, gyroscopes and GPS in most cases). Alpinestars also equips its pilots with its Tech-Air device, similar to the design of the D-Air Dainese. The two companies have also started a patent war on this subject,…
Since this year, Ixon has joined the two Italian manufacturers in this field thanks to based in Chavanod (74), In & Motion. By using the motorcycle Grands Prix as a full-scale laboratory, manufacturers have been able to develop increasingly safe and efficient electronic airbag systems, now available in versions for use on the road. These devices come in the form of a waistcoat to slip under your jacket, with a cushion that inflates above the shoulders, chest and neck under the impulse of integrated sensors (no sensors to attach on his motorcycle, as with the Bering system).
Their interests in terms of protection are undeniable, but their popularization is hampered by a still high price, higher than 1000 € at Alpinestars and Dainese. At In & Motion, the “road” version is called Revolution and should be marketed “for 2018”, informs us its spokesperson Anne-Laure Hoegeli. The French company is currently carrying out a fairly original development program through 500 motorcyclists voluntarily registered on one to test it for free for 180 days from next spring..
