Comparison test BMW F 700 GS Vs Kawasaki ER-6f Vs Yamaha Tracer 700: on the road !
To complete our first test of the Tracer 700, Yamaha’s new mid-capacity roadster, Site measured it with the BMW F700GS road trail and the Kawasaki ER-6f streamlined roadster… Comparative test.
The Tracer 700 versus the F700GS and ER-6f
"The Tracer 700 is a road vehicle offered at an affordable price, which is designed to get you away from everyday life and live unforgettable moments" … It is by re-reading this commercial catchphrase, as well as our, that Site decided to organize a new comparison.
At the origin of this confrontation is therefore the arrival, this summer, of a road and medium-displacement motorcycle within the range of the number one sales of motorcycles in France (Yamaha, what else?): " stickee "MT-07 Tracer, it is of-fi-cially called Tracer 700…
The new road from Yamaha
Closely derived from the "short" MT-07, the Tracer benefits from the two main strengths of the Yamaha roadster: its engine that is both lively and sober, and its light and therefore easy cycle part, which have enabled the small MT to dethrone the ‘and the ranking of sales (read our).
At the heart of the new Yamaha road beats the very latest generation "CP2" (Euro4 homologation), the one that has been equipping the, "neo-retro" version of the. The maximum values are unchanged: 74.8 hp at 9000 rpm and 68 Nm at 6500 rpm (see the technical sheets on the last page).
Iwata’s in-line twin cylinder set at 270 ° – hence its name "CrossPlane" – thus develops power and torque slightly greater than those of the smallest Kawasaki watermill (649 cc against 689): 72, 1 hp at 8,500 rpm and 64 Nm at 7,000 rpm for Akashi’s in-line twin cylinder set at 180 °.
Compared to 700 798 cc (!) Of the on the other hand, the engine of the Tracer 700 must bow, on paper at least: the Bavarian inline-twin set at 360 ° is the only one to reach the bar of 75 horsepower (at 7300 rpm / min). Above all, it has a maximum torque of 77 Nm available from 5300 rpm. "Sehr gut" ?
The differences of 0.2 hp (!) And 9 Nm which separate the Yamaha and the BMW should however be erased by the weight difference when fully loaded: 196 kg for the Tracer against 209 kg for the GS. We observe that the ER is still a little heavier than the German with 211 kg.
The little Yamaha is therefore likely to win the "acceleration" and "recovery" heats of this new match … MNC readers – who, as everyone knows, are a little more fortunate than the others – know that at their out, the MT-07 had given the ER-6n a hard time (read our) and that the XSR700 had won over the Scrambler Ducati (read our)…
BMW’s smallest GS
In the family of BMW trails, the F700GS represents the youngest: the lightest and the most accessible physically and financially. But the Bavarian brand focuses its sales pitch above all on the versatility of its motorcycle, designed "for all styles of rider, whatever their level"…
Despite its prestigious – statutory! – GS designation, the BMW "kleine" and its twin are commercially dominated by (the!). Le Journal moto du Net, however, excluded from this comparison the small English, because the latter is both too "expansive" (3-cylinder 95 hp) and "expensive" (10,750 € minimum)…
Of the three motorcycles that we are opposing today, the BMW is therefore the most adventurous. All-terrain enthusiasts will still point out the surprising – disappointing, annoying, distressing? – absence of cardan transmission, spoked rims, engine guard and / or crankcases, hand guards, windshield worthy of the name, solid inverted fork or luggage rack !
Despite – all – that, the front wheel of 19 inches and the fitting of thinner and more "off-road" tires (Michelin Anakee III) are enough to catalog the German in the road trails, category with which the new small Yamaha flirt. and many recent "road" motorcycles.
If the front suspension of the BMW is as basic as those of its rivals, the rear is more practical thanks to the dial allowing to easily adjust the spring preload. It can even become sophisticated if the customer checks the ESA in the extensive BMW Motorrad "Options and accessories" catalog….
Taking into account the packs (Comfort and Dynamic) selected by BMW France, the price of our test model is close to € 11,000! But with the F700GS being updated for 2017, it might be possible to get a discount on the latest 2016 models – "Hey, Popeye, a little 10%?" -, or to benefit from a few options without exceeding the floor price ?
Kawasaki’s sporty mini GT
Question price, it is the which ensures the most – finally the least – since it is currently displayed in the dealerships and on the official site Kawasaki France to 6999 € (even 6649 € in promotion). That’s 1400 euros less than the "affordable" Yamaha roadster and 2500 € less than the "versatile" BMW trail…
It is to further spice up this new comparative test that MNC preferred the economical and road version of the ER-6 roadster ("f" therefore) to the, higher on legs and more expensive of 900 euros. Yamaha, which has enjoyed considerable success by launching its MT-07 without ABS for just € 5,700 (€ 6,200 today), can it lose at its own game? ?
In addition, under its – false – road trail airs, the Tracer 700 does not gain anything in terms of travel at the front (130 mm) and only grabs 14 mm at the rear (144 mm) compared to the MT original. We are therefore halfway between the values of the ER-6f (125 and 130 mm respectively) and the Versys (150 and 145 mm).
In addition, the ER-6f does not do things by halves: we note for example that it is equipped with a complete fairing – only "semi" on the Yam ‘-, high half-handlebars and a large adjustable screen – with tools, we will come back to it … Also, it seemed relevant and interesting to oppose this "real" small road to the Tracer 700.
Site readers – who, as everyone knows, are more observant than others – will have noted on our test model the presence of luggage racks (as on the BMW). By entrusting us with a motorcycle equipped with valos, Kawasaki France does not miss the mark: even in this configuration (+ € 781, ugly supports included …), the ER-6f is less expensive than the Tracer !
The Kawa therefore presents itself as the "sporty mini GT" of our trio. Is it the same in terms of driving position and dynamic behavior? Where does the new Yamaha road stand in relation to this streamlined Kawasaki roadster and the BMW road trail? Answers on the following pages !
