Comparison test Kawasaki Z900, Suzuki GSX-S750 and Yamaha MT-09: Election of the best Japanese "maxi-mid-size" roadster
In 2017, Kawasaki further strengthens its bestseller and launches its Z900 in the three legs of the MT-09, updated by Yamaha. Suzuki stays true to its signature "seven-and-a-half" displacement with its new GSX-S750. MNC compares these three new Japanese roadsters … neither maxi, nor "mid-size" ?
Z900 Vs GSX-S750 Vs MT-09 page 1: Between "mid-size" and maxisport roadsters…
At the beginning of the century, the Z750 was classified in the category of medium-displacement motorcycles because it was measured at 600 cc: Yamaha FZ6, Suzuki Bandit, Honda Hornet … Aligned with the prices of its "small" competitors 4- cylinders, the Kawasaki quickly established itself as the queen – the president! – of this segment (read our).
Raised in 2013 to 800 (precisely 806 cc), the displacement of the "Zed" achieved this year exceeds 900 (948 cc!) so that the Kawa clearly no longer belongs to the "mid-size" class where the Z650, a new version of the ER-6n, is already circulating..
But the Z900 does not for all that join the clan of high-performance roadsters which are both significantly more powerful and more expensive, as they are often derived from (top) Superbike models. Why has Kawasaki inflated its best-Zeller in this way? The answer is in two letters and a number: CP3.
Behind this Star Wars droid name hides the 3-cylinder MT-09 that Yamaha updated in 2017. It is mainly "because" of him that Kawasaki decided to release a brand new roadster. the displacement flirts dangerously with that of the Z1000 (1043 cc today, but 953 until 2010 …).
Launched in 2013 and at the origin of the formidable revival of the roadster range – sorry, the "Hyper Naked" range – at Yamaha, the MT-09 today finds itself wedged between the sparkling twin-cylinder MT-07 "CP2 "and the powerful 4-cylinder MT-10" CP4 ".
Honorable, the sales volume of the MT-09 last year in France was significantly lower than that of the Z800: 3740 to 846. However, it should be noted that in the blue dealerships, the road version "Tracer 900" knows a huge success and amply eclipses the original roadster.
Compared to its rivals, the MT-09 has tried a slightly different approach to seduce bikers: in addition to its engine, the Yamaha differs from the Z, CB and GS (R then XS) by its particularly stripped down look and its mid-range ergonomics. -path between the roadster and the supermotard…
Suzuki for its part, has chosen to remain faithful to "its" intermediate displacement by redesigning its GSR750 into a GSX-S750 which does not run on the beds of the GSX-S1000, but is however openly inspired by its appearance. and his "standing", even stealing some equipment !
Due to its rising price (€ 8,899), scrupulously identical to that of the Kawasaki and 100 euros lower than the Yamaha, Hamamatsu’s new machine is therefore faced with Akashi’s two "nine cents" and from Iwata. And on the Tokyo side, what’s going on ?
Far absent from this new 100% Japanese MNC comparator, Honda is currently focusing on – real – medium-displacement models with its CB500F and CB650F. The Tokyo giant is abandoning the maxiroadster sector since its good – but old – CB1000R has not yet been replaced, nor even kept in the catalog for lack of an updated Euro4.
However, with the Kawasaki Z900, Suzuki GSX-S750 and Yamaha MT-09, the Site comparison already looks good. Motorcyclists have thanks to them a varied offer in the segment of "maxi-mid-size" roadsters. Which of the three will win the most votes? Let’s take a tour of these three motorcycles together, before taking the controls !
