Duel BMW R 1250 GS Vs Ducati Multistrada 1260 S: variable valve timing, unique versatility
The R 1200 GS is dead, long live the R 1250 GS! In the race for power in the maxitrails, BMW responds with a larger twin cylinder with variable valve timing. Is this enough to continue to dominate the competition, especially the powerful Ducati Multistrada 1260 which has been using this technology since 2015 ? MNC duel.

7 errors. Want to shine in society and wow your biker friends? Teach them to distinguish the new R1250GS from the old R1200GS! The exercise is not easy because they are aesthetically and technically identical: the only visible differences are the radial calipers from the American manufacturer Hayes (Brembo in 2018), the "Shift Cam" marking on the cylinder heads and the new colors. Yes, you have to have an eye ! |
Multiroutes. La Multistrada ("multiroutes", in Italian) has not changed much either, going from 1200 to 1260 at the end of 2017: its general line is preserved, with this kind of hooked "beak" not very glamorous … Its trellis frame tubular is identical, except for its elongated 48 mm single-sided swingarm and its caster angle which opens from 24 to 25 ° for the benefit of stability. Its spoked rims are also 340g lighter. |
Engine. This is the major change of the R1250GS: its flat twin goes from 1170cc to 1254cc via an increase in the bore (from 101 to 102.5 mm) and the stroke (from 73 to 76 mm) and adopts a new variable distribution called "ShiftCam". Developments which improve its performance (from 125 hp and 125 Nm to 136 hp and 143 Nm) and its approval. The Boxer actually offers more roundness at low revs, reminiscent of the old air flats but with much more responsiveness! MNC also appreciates the mute of certain unpleasant mechanical noises on the old model, helped by the revised exhaust.. The R1250GS now hums less aggressively, but still just as characteristic. In detail, its "Shift Cam" system acts on the lifting of the intake valves – in 5 milliseconds – in order to improve the efficiency of the twin over the entire rev range. The intake camshaft has for this purpose two cams with distinct profiles (more or less aggressive), which the device activates according to the load requested via a switching slide and an electromechanical activator.. |
Engine (bis). The Multistrada 1260 also gained muscle at the end of 2017 by increasing its piston stroke from 67.9 to 71.5 mm (the bore remains at 106 mm). Its dual-ignition V-twin (two spark plugs per cylinder) now cubs 1262 cc and claims 158 hp and 129.5 Nm, which is 2 hp and 7 Nm less than the old 1,198.4 cc block. This drop in performance – voluntary – aims to improve its filling and make it more available ("+ 18%" of torque at 5500 rpm). Since 2015, the Ducati trail also receives a variable distribution called Desmodromic Variable Timing (DVT) which intervenes both on the opening of the intake and exhaust valves thanks to a system of removable cams managed by electronics. As on the BMW, its operation is completely transparent. Thanks to its positive effects on energy efficiency, this variable valve timing allows the two manufacturers to prepare for the upcoming tightening of anti-pollution standards with Euro5 in 2020. |
Good vibes ? The twin-cylinder of the Multistrada and the R1250GS delivers vibrations from 4,500 rpm, or around 130 km / h in 6th gear on each motorcycle. On the BMW, this phenomenon seems to us to be significantly more pronounced than before: its variable valve timing is the cause, due to the greater number of moving parts ? Still, the Boxer sometimes makes the hands unpleasantly "sizzle" at a constant speed after having tickled the buttocks. Fortunately, this vibratory episode fades later. The Ducati develops more pronounced vibrations (V-twin obliges), but ultimately less disturbing because their frequency is lower. |
Serial tablet. Other developments on the R1250GS: the standard integration of the hill start assistant and a (16.5 cm!), Hitherto offered as an option. This full-color dashboard – complete and controlled from the handlebars – is readable in all circumstances and offers a ranking very logical countless information. As a bonus, a Bluetooth connection allows access to certain functions of a smartphone (directory, music, etc.) and to display a simplified GPS on the screen via the BMW Connectivity application. Its only flaw is the laborious resetting of daily trips, which requires groping in several sub-menus: a dedicated key would be welcome to perform this common operation.. |
Bis tablet. The Ducati is not left out in terms of high tech instrumentation with its 5-inch (12.7 cm) panel specific to the most luxurious "S" and Pikes Peak versions (LCD screen on the standard Multistrada 1260). Also in color, this modern dashboard is easily controlled from the stems. As on the BMW, all the important information is clearly visible: speed, engine speed, gear engaged, gasoline, temperatures, driving modes, etc. The Ducati Link application also allows a connection with a "smart phone", in particular to collect information while driving: maximum angle taken by the motorcycle, consumption, maximum speed, etc.. |
Fingertips. The BMW and the Ducati have remote controls on the handlebars that are accessible and practical. MNC greatly appreciates the backlighting of the keys on the Multistrada (right), which is very useful for night driving. On the R1250GS, it is the notched "Multicontroler" wheel on the left stalk which seduced the Journal moto du Net: to date, no competing system – joystick or "arrows" – does better in terms of simplicity. You just have to turn it to scroll through the information, then tilt it to act on a menu. Childish. |
Choice pieces. There is no shortage of beautiful parts on the Ducati, starting with its stylish rear light, its superb single-sided arm and its handguards with aluminum brackets that integrate the turn signals. The Italian is undoubtedly the most refined of maxi-trails ! |
Without contact. Both motorcycles have a "hands-free" system via a transponder remote control, which allows you to start without inserting a key in the ignition switch. On the BMW, this "Keyless" also controls the opening of the fuel flap: all you have to do is switch off the ignition to be able to activate the magnetic closing latch. Convenient. On the Ducati, opening the hatch requires entering the key. Useful clarification: this equipment is standard on the Multistrada 1260 S, but optional on the R1250GS. |
All Terrain. For lack of adequate tires, MNC did not tempt the devil off the beaten track with these maxitrails… But who really risks it on these motorcycles which exceed 230 kg and 20,000 euros ?! Still, on rolling tracks, the BMW was more comfortable than the Ducati thanks to its better mass centralization and its 19-inch rim (17 "on the Italian). MNC also appreciates the precision of its braking and its injection, which promote a smooth ride on soft ground. Under the same conditions, the powerful bite of the "Multi" calipers and its roughness at low revs are no allies. Finally, the German benefits from a better turning diameter (4.46 m against 4.96 m according to MNC measurements): always useful to turn around in front of an impressive obstacle ! |
Options. The R1250GS, displayed at 17,400 euros, presents as usual a list of options as long as the arm: this test model "fully equipped" reaches here the 21,375 euros, that is to say 3,975 euros of options mainly in the form of packs! This is why MNC opposed it to the "S" version of the Multistrada 1260, offered at 20,990 euros (18,590 € as standard). Among the options installed on the "Gehesse" of this duel, let us quote the hand guards (on a trail, anyway ?!), the heated handles, the luggage racks, the cruise control, the keyless start, but also the ESA Dynamic piloted suspensions, the double-acting shifter, certain driving modes (only Rain and Road series), angle sensitive ABS and traction control. BMW’s next step: sell only the production frame and the rest as an option ?! The Ducati offers all the aforementioned equipment as standard on this "S" version, while its advanced electronics are provided by an inertial unit. sophisticated, like on the brand’s Superbikes. However, the intervention of electronic assistance appears as fine and precise on the "Multi" as on the "GS". |
Roads on stilts. The observation is confirmed each year: the maxitrails are transformed into real road motorcycles, even if it means abandoning their all-terrain origins to "get bogged down" shamelessly in a form of bourgeois comfort … Because ultimately, install a heated saddle and a PA on an R1250GS and you get … an R1250RT ! This higher bid wanted by most of the customers pushes others towards more "authentic" trails, like the Honda Africa Twin (in the category). It also explains the birth of new and: much lighter and more fun motorcycles. Trails, what ! |
Big caps. MNC brought out the hat and the big winter gloves to fight against the cold wave very present during this duel! Polar temperatures, freezing rains and even a few snowflakes (!) Played the spoiler. At this price, our "always more maxi" trails could still include a stove to keep the coffee thermos warm. ! |
