Duel Goldwing Vs Roadmaster: carriages with agile feet !
The Honda Goldwing and the Indian Roadmaster satisfy, each in its own way, the desire for absolute comfort on a motorbike, large engines generous in sensations and luxury. With a bluffing common point on such ultra-road: an amazing dynamism ! Duel.
MNC bonus: benchmarks against the Electra Glide
To enrich this comparison of “ultra-road” motorcycles, MNC also planned to include the, worthy representative of this “heavy-duty” category..
But despite our efforts and different proposed dates, impossible to put the glove on an Electra at this period with HD France or one of its dealers … However, the Motorcycle Journal of the Net can engage in some "virtual comparisons "interesting since we recently completed one with the new Road Glide Ultra, very close to the Electra design (identical engine, cycle part and luggage).
Like the Goldwing and the Roadmaster, the Electra has all the comfort expected on this type of motorcycle. Its finish and presentation are sumptuous – like that of the Indian, a cut above the Honda -, while its equipment includes among other things regulator, storage compartment, alarm, full instrumentation and very efficient LED lighting..
The ultra-road brand from Milwaukee – founded in 1903, two years after Indian as the challenger likes to recall! – also has a sophisticated multimedia set including a GPS (absent as standard with its rivals) and a sound system with Bluetooth connection with exceptional power: no other installation currently matches it in terms of pleasure and listening quality !
Two full-face helmets fit into its classy top-case, while its hard-shell suitcases are deep enough to fit, for example, two pairs of motorcycle boots and gloves. Only – big – criticism to make this luggage "Tour Pack": the absence of central locking with remote control, standard on the Roadmaster and the "Gold".
This option is reserved for – even more – luxurious CVOs: rather petty, insofar as the Electra is already priced at € 27,650 in Ultra Classic version and € 28,950 in Ultra Limited! We also regret the absence – even as an option – of a reverse gear (hard to reverse the 414 kg with only the strength of the legs!) And of an electric adjustment of its windshield, which is also very protective..
Without having unfortunately confronted it directly with its rivals, the Harley seems less intuitive and above all less "sporty" than the Indian, surprisingly dynamic thanks to its more modern design (aluminum chassis incorporating the airbox, in particular). The less convincing balance of the Electra and the inferior rigor of its steel frame are also questioned..
The Harley’s front axle, falling at low speed, is also heavier and less precise. Suffice to say that the Electra almost passes for a "truck" compared to the Goldwing, incredibly maneuverable with regard to its size. The "Flat-6" is a precious ally for the distribution of the masses, of which the Honda takes advantage brilliantly !
On the other hand, we appreciate the coupled ABS braking of the Electra, sufficiently powerful and well calibrated: its specific Brembo calipers ensure, in addition to being super pretty. Supple and full of charm thanks to these "Good Vibes", its partially water-cooled "Twin Cam 103 Twin Cooled" is nevertheless less energetic than that of the Roadmaster with equivalent performance: 87 hp at 5010 rpm and 138 Nm at 3750 rpm.
Like the Indian, the Harley would therefore have undergone the law of the Goldwing during our relaunch tests, at all speeds. In addition, the "big block" of the Roadmaster heats less and enjoys a much more pleasant selection: the harder Harley box suffers from a hellish dead point! The Indian also offers a pleasant burst of energy around 3500 rpm, a regime where the twin H-D suggests a gear change to plunge back into its maximum torque zone..
Finally, it should be noted that to match the displacement of 1800 cc of the Goldwing and Roadmaster, it is necessary to turn to the elitist Electra CVO Limited, to date the only motorcycle in the Harley "Touring" range to receive the Twin Cam 110 cooled by air / water 1801 cc (the twin 103 of the Electra "standard" cube 1690 cc).
But the price then literally explodes since this Electra CVO appears at € 40,920, or 11,520 euros more than the Indian and 10,221 euros more than the Honda! So many reasons which suggest to MNC that the flagship road Harley-Davidson would have had a hard time winning against the "ultra-homogeneous" Goldwing and the "ultra-well-born" Roadmaster…
