Duel YZF-R1 / CBR1000RR C-ABS: Sensations or safety, two schools clash !
In a category where performance matters, Site subjected the Yamaha R1 to the famous Cross Plane rigging and the CBR1000RR equipped with the efficient road-proof electronic ABS.. Verdict of this (hyper) sporting duel !
Japanese arm wrestling !
Gently wedged at 130 km / h in sixth, our two stars of the day swallow the motorway connecting Paris to Troyes with the spirit of a college student on the eve of the start of the school year…
On the Honda, the protection is nevertheless satisfactory, the vibrations perfectly contained and the saddle almost comfortable … for a Superbike! The pressure on the wrists is measured and the legs are folded without excess around a reservoir of confusing finesse. We are good what, relaxed, almost serene… .
But as with the Yam ‘- less well off in terms of protection and comfort – the desire to whip the mechanics is omnipresent, as these 180 hp gazelles (in free version) lengthen the stride with conviction at the slightest rotation. throttle grip !
However, as much to break the suspense right away: if the Honda benefits from a significant blast past the 4,500 rpm, the Yamaha sticks a suitcase to it each time! Responsive as a twin, the 2009 R1 has part of the dirty character at the bottom – the mechanics graze below 2,500 rpm – but then tows up to the upper echelons of the tachometer with delightful vigor and sound..
Grave, rocky, almost irregular, the generous vocalizations of the Yamaha have no difficulty in eclipsing the timid melody of the Fireblade! Especially since a valve on the exhaust noticeably suppresses the gentle hiss of the Honda four-cylinder, from idle up to 4000 rpm….
However, if the pilot of the Yam ‘grabs the banana believing to punish the CBR with each acceleration, a glance in the efficient mirrors shows that the Honda also has very sharp claws! Less quick to react, the CBR1000RR then concedes nothing to its rival and even allows itself to gradually nibble its delay !
However, the acceleration of the Yamaha seems much hairier and lasts up to 10,000 rpm (the break occurring at 13,500 rpm), while that of the Honda is linear and loses its vigor from 9,000 rpm (breaking at 12,000 rpm). In practice, however, the R1 is truly unable to get rid of the CBR on long stretches of stretches and cannot compete in top speed: over 250 km / h for the CBR, barely 240 km / h for the R1. !
The explanation is undoubtedly due to our "saving" Franco-French clamping which levels the performance of our two Hypersports and especially to the gearbox stage, much more usable – on the road and in 106 hp – on the Honda than on the Yamaha.
To this very long staging (too much on the road) is added a clutch that is delicate to measure, a significant turning radius and unbearable heat rises along the thighs and the foundation – thank you for the pots under the saddle! – which make the Japanese a real ordeal in the city and at low speeds.
Add to that a stressful position for the wrists, the appearance of vibrations during strong acceleration, a rikiki chest – although equipped with straps to hang a backpack – and a very sensitive go-around in Mode A (the mapping the most aggressive, Mode B bringing more smoothness and Standard Mode a mixture of the two) and the Yamaha would almost pass for a European sportswoman – not to say an Italian – alongside the gentle CBR !
Not temperamental for a penny, the Honda resumes at 1,500 rev / min in sixth, shines correctly for a sportswoman, does not vibrate and bends to the slightest wishes of its pilot with a confusing goodwill. Thanks to better distributed masses, it hides wonderfully its overweight (11 kg) due to ABS – or 210 kg all full against 206 kg for the R1 – and pulls out of the city test with the honors.
Better: its trunk allows you to take a disc block, a pair of gloves and rain pants! Who said "Fayotte" ?!
