Bluffing !
Like it or not, the Roadster leaves no one indifferent. The front is the most confusing, with the trapezoidal headlight and the mini windshield. The least we can say is that the V72 is highlighted !
First observation: it is unlike any other. Like it or not, the Roadster leaves no one indifferent, especially in its yellow livery. The front is the most confusing, with the trapezoidal headlight and the mini windshield. The least we can say is that the V72 is showcased! But where is the frame? The double beam design makes it almost completely collapsed to give the lead to the seemingly suspended engine. So much so that one wonders at first if this assembly can hold up…
At the limit of the minimalist
The counter block is simple, all analog (totalizer and partial roller). Six lights aligned in two rows indicate neutral, headlight, oil, water temperature, automatic reserve shifting and turn signals. Nothing superfluous, it’s even minimalist limit. We go up, the seat is rather pleasant, we settle nicely on the backrest formed by the passenger seat. The legs are not bent too much on the footrests located slightly behind, while the hands find the half-handlebars in a sporty position but not in a hypersport position. The half-handlebars are adjustable in height, spacing and angulation are above the upper triple tree. Sport position rather than roadster, therefore.
Contact
With the ignition on, we let the pump bring the fuel to the injection, a little gas: the V72 snorts in a vibration that is all his own, strong and regular while being present. The noise is also unique to the V72 and unlike any of the other 1000 twins, whether Japanese or European. More discreet than a Ducati but more present than an Aprilia: normal: 72 is between 60 and 90! The clutch is more for a man’s grip, you can tell you have to pass the torque! Press the selector, the first is engaged, let’s go.
City
In the city first: at low speed, the bike is very healthy, manoeuvrable, and its narrowness works wonders in Parisian congestion. The limited weight of 205 kg fully loaded does not explain everything, the overall balance is excellent. It’s simple, the only other bike I have found so easy to handle is the VFR! The position is very natural and the handling is easy. The very precise gearbox facilitates maneuvers. However, even if the beast picks up again from 2,500 rpm, we can feel that it prefers not to go below 3,500. So in town, we juggle between 1, 2 and 3 and when the cars are there. stop, we are often on the clutch. On the other hand, we already feel that the balance of the chassis, the gniak of the engine and the powerful braking will make things easier. The bike goes where it is asked, accelerates lively and brakes hard, what more could you ask for? Maybe to pull a bit shorter: the first is long and it is often used in heavy traffic.
If we take a passenger on board, he will be perched high, his legs rather bent, and it would be better if the exercise is not too long to avoid anger. It is as good (or bad) as on a hypersport, no more and no less. The only advantage is the good damping which will prevent it from compressing the vertebrae. !
Highway
Exit the city by taking a little motorway. Of course, if we pull the reports, we are outlawed from the third gear engaged. So we will say that we continue the test on the track or on the German motorway, as desired. Up to 160-170, the nose screen is surprisingly efficient. We stay head straight, the double surface allowing the air flow to pass just above the helmet, even for taller riders (1.81 m). At these speeds, you get the feeling that the bike is feeling good, you are spinning at 6000-6,500 rpm at 160-170 and it purrs nicely. If you accelerate further, you have to lower your head a bit, more because of the turbulence than the opposition of the wind itself. But even over 200 you don’t have your head shaking like a plum tree like with any bubble-free roadster. We control and the bike does not tack. When arriving on big curves, we have only one desire: not to cut! The feeling of precision given by the Voxan’s chassis gives you confidence, and since you don’t have your head ripped off thanks to the surprising nose screen, you stay in big curves at full speed. That said, the highway, eh, there is better way to express the capabilities of a motorcycle! So we’ll quickly – that’s the word – get out of this permit trap. How to ride at 130 with a motorcycle whose cruising speed is 170 ?
Road
Finally, the road, the favorite terrain for pleasure motorcycles. And no doubt that this Voxan distills it, pleasure! The Roadster is simply stunningly efficient on the open road. You accelerate hard, brake late, you can enter a curve on the brakes, even the rear is precise and controllable and can pull back to the rope if overconfident. In addition, in a real emergency, you can brake on the angle without the bike straightening up, that’s great! We want more and we head for the passes to see what it’s worth in tight laces. What to say ? It continues to be stunningly efficient. And even if the asphalt is a bit wrinkled, the suspensions take care of your vertebrae by allowing you to stay in line where a rigid motorcycle is already hopping: a treat! Braking is in tune with the suspensions. In addition, we have the help of the engine brake, as long as you put gas on downshifting otherwise you will block the rear: the torque is present also when decelerating and will quickly call you to order! Fortunately, you can release the rear brake when downshifting and then resume it if you want to reach the rope more quickly. The drill is easy for an experienced driver, and the precision of the transmission even allows you to move up and down on the fly if you master the maneuver. The ground clearance limit is far and the footrests are safe !: Indeed, if you are at the limit, it is the muffler inlet collar that will lick the asphalt first. But the angle taken at this point is almost unreasonable on the open road! On the other hand, if you taste the circuit, it will be necessary to think of reinforcing it under penalty of passing spontaneously in free exhaust at one time or another. !
All this is even better with a crown of 2 or 3 more teeth, as on all motorcycles, exhausts which breathe better and make more filling at mid-speed. In short, you will understand, the Roadster is a pure pleasure motorcycle, precise, comfortable for its sporting abilities. A real success! Wondering the reasons for his relative failure … All those who try him are amazed by his behavior, over to you, now !
Practical aspects
Two U models can fit under the saddle, but the location will have to be dressed so as not to chip the paint. Fairly well supplied tool kit, also under the saddle. The rest ? a rag and / or rain pants under the saddle by turning the tool kit! Bagster has a specific tank cover that will be of great help in your transport. Failing that or in addition, a pair of saddlebags allows the transport of heavy holiday equipment … Autonomy: 15.5 l tank, consumption between 5.5 (road by rolling) and 8 liters in town making a 400DA each fire or attack in the passes.
