Quadro4 4-wheel scooter test: the Quadroture du cercle
Long awaited, the world’s first 4-wheel scooter is finally on the market. MNC gives you its first impressions of this atypical vehicle, which upsets the codes of the scooter genre and turns heads in its path… First try.
Quadro4: impressive stability !
With the Quadro S, the brand had already demonstrated its know-how and pushed back the limits of scooter angle taking. With the Quadro4, capable of tilting 45 ° to one side or the other, few will fully exploit its potential. As the kilometers go by, the Quadro4 becomes more and more tame and reveals unsuspected qualities.
The driver is more and more confident entering a curve as in the successive series of turns. As was already the case with the Quadro S, the front end of the Quadro4 seems much more stable and better riveted to the ground than a front end of MP3, more inclined to "slip" with its 13 inch wheels closer together..
The use being more sporty, it is necessary on the other hand to help a little to the handlebars by counterbraking to accelerate the inscription in curve and the rapid changes of angle. The Quadro4 bends easily during exercise and even seems to have no limit because it seems so far away !
To reach the tilt stop, you have to enter at good speed on a roundabout or a wide access ramp on the motorway. Stunning! Even Duro tires, sometimes criticized for their perfectible grip, seem riveted to the ground. Difficult to be more secure !
On the engine side, the Quadro4 does better than its predecessor with a small power gain (3 horsepower), a little less torque but a greater range of use and a higher top speed. More than the power – which goes to 30 horsepower and benefits from a new injection map – it is on the transmission that the engineers in charge of the new engine have worked more particularly with a consequent clutch-variator, the addition of a balancing arm and the integration of a differential to manage the traction of the two independent rear wheels. A first on a scooter !
Well launched, the Quadro4 reaches a maximum speed of 140 km / h counter (about 130 chrono), with an intervention of the switch at around 8000 rpm in descent. Amply sufficient speed for regular peri-urban use, especially as the engine approval on intermediate speeds is very satisfactory.
Acceleration, hill starts, mid-revs, everything works consistently despite a good fifty kilos more dry than the Quadro S. The average consumption is 5.5 l / 100 km, which gives the Quadro4 a range of around 240 km. On the motorway, the protection offered by the large gale and the apron is most correct, but hand guards would have been welcome (according to our information, they would soon be optional).
At the end of this test, we cannot remain indifferent to the Quadro4’s proposal in terms of performance and safety. So are four wheels more efficient than two or three? The answer is yes, of course.
However, we particularly appreciate two-wheelers – preferably motorcycles! – but they must be equipped with much better quality tires and a multitude of electronic aids to offer the same feeling of security.
Conquering its market
An elitist product if there is one, the Quadro4 cannot be sold off: sold at a price of 12,490 €, it will have a lot to do to avoid some prejudices such as "for this price we have a car or a good motorcycle".
Certainly, but the first is essentially intended to get stuck in traffic jams while the second requires a specific permit that some are reluctant to pass.
What many motorists want, tired of spending their lives in traffic jams, is precisely an easy-to-access secondary vehicle (just a 7-hour training course to spend, nothing if we can justify the regular practice of one of two -wheels), if possible safe and secure so as not to wallow stupidly at the first roundabout.
Well that’s exactly what the Quadro4, the first four-wheel scooter on the market! As a colleague pointed out, "there is brain juice in there and it deserves respect". And as Michel Audiard would say, "the price is forgotten, the quality remains!", Which could be converted into "the price is forgotten, security remains!"
