Duel Ducati 1100 Vs Triumph 1200 XC: Scrambler against Scrambler
Two members of the Scrambler family are opposed on Site: the 1100 Special Ducati released last year and the all new 1200 XC Triumph! Which motorcycle to keep after this duel? MNC carefully studies the question and gives you its answer…
Duel Scrambler 1100 Vs 1200 XC page 2: The more "traditional" Scrambler
"By launching the very first modern-era Scrambler in 2006, Triumph was once again at the origin of a new category", the Brits boast … at the risk of being contradicted by Site readers – who, as everyone knows, are a little more picky than the others !
One in 1997 then launched into production in 2001. In 2004, while the French brand was trying to relaunch itself, (three thousand kilometers!) On the handlebars of this Street Scrambler of the new millennium … But Voxan motorcycles are now the ancient history … let’s move on.
In 2019, Triumph is trying above all to make up for the delay agreed to its great adversary … German! BMW and its many versions of the (including a Scrambler released almost three years ago) have invaded France, to the delight of bikers and their dealers..
In addition to its 900 cc model, the Hinckley firm now offers two new Scrambler 1200: the XE version, top of the range and high suspension (250 mm of travel!), And the XC version, on the program a little more urban – and therefore selected by MNC for this duel – but still very "off-road" oriented.
Unlike Ducati, which does not knock out the crowd with marketing spiel and technical data on its official site (want more info? The Italians connect you directly to a dealer!), Triumph does checkouts on its own site. There are at least eleven reasons to choose a Scrambler … of English origin, "of course".
The Bonneville 1200 cc engine with special scrambler tuning, authentic scrambler qualities, scrambler style, on-road comfort, power and performance, rider-designed technologies, Bluetooth connectivity, details and exceptional finishes, two Scrambler 1200 models to choose from, customization options and inspiration kits ", details the manufacturer.
Tested and approved four months ago by the Moto Journal du Net (crash-tested and proven, can we even write!), The Scrambler 1200 does indeed have some serious arguments. First in the list of Triumph and in the notes of the Journal moto du Net: the engine, always so shiny !
England Vs Italy
Recycling is good for the environment deals ! Unlike Ducati, which brought its Desmodue up to standard (Euro4), Triumph is capitalizing on its in-line twin, which is very recent and terribly well finished. Far from getting bored, MNC asks for more !
Meticulous surface treatments, meticulously camouflaged cables and wires, machined cylinder fins like on old machines, metal shoe to protect the mechanics from off-road stones … or Paul and Jacques crossing when the little guy is red in the city ?!
There is little more than the radiator – because it is a watermill, yes! – which can possibly make the most esthetes grumble. The latter would undoubtedly like small metal scoops to garnish this piece in the raw state and all black … but not discreet enough? Even within the editorial staff, opinions diverge.
Fans of the scrambler will melt in front of – or literally "against" … – the exhaust line that crosses the bike in a very, very high position. The nicely domed tank and its biton or bi-texture color rather (matte and shiny green separated by a thin yellow line on our test model, "so British") also make a very strong impression..
As on the Ducati, the fenders of the Triumph are in aluminum but they adopt more classic curves. Also in aluminum, the swingarm is less imposing. In addition, its less grainy finish seems more noble … and easier to clean? The chain guard is one of the few plastic parts: discreet, light, cheap … but not very retro !
The double rear combination is doubly exciting: in addition to reminiscent of the old Scramblers, it comes from the prestigious house of Ohlins! The Ducati Scrambler 1100 can also benefit from Swedish suspensions, but it is necessary to select its very modern "Sport" version, with stick rims in particular..
The rims of the 1200 XC are spoke, of course, and tangential what is more: the tires mounted on them are of the "tubeless" type. The spokes of the rims of the 1100 Special plunge directly into the center of the rims, which does not prevent the Ducati from doing without tubes too. !
While our two rivals today share the same type of tire – road, studded – their dimensions vary. The difference is rather small at the rear: same height of 17 inches but more finesse in the English camp with 150 mm against 180. At the front, the 1200 XC mounts a 90 mm tire on a 21 inch rim, when the 1100 Special prefers 120 mm over 18 ‘respectively.
The Triumph has a large inverted fork, but it hides it under protection that the Ducati lacks. Even if it is only from the side, the owner of the XC can make his friends believe that he and his motorcycle are ready to escape, the big !
Silver braided brake hoses allow ordering of radial mount calipers supplied by Brembo. A "Monza" type cap throne on the tank crossed in its length by an aluminum strap: we can detect in this English Scrambler a little sporty accent, not to say … Italian !
The Scrambler 1200 is also very modern in terms of equipment: its ergonomic controls allow you to control a very successful color TFT instrumentation from a technical point of view, more questionable from an aesthetic point of view. MNC mainly regrets that the hood is not perfectly round.
The English designers, however, wanted to combine technology – LED – and shapes – round – at the level of the indicators. Some might criticize their size, especially compared to that of the central lighthouse. But Site suspects the British marketers here of promoting the sale of smaller blinkers available as accessories. Smart, no ?
Likewise, the Triumph Scrambler respects the tradition of round mirrors, which the Monster 1100… sorry, the Scrambler 1100 with very "neo" retro! Rare similarity between English and Italian: the choice of a round headlight with a distinctive LED border, with the coat of arms of their own brand in its center. Ready to take to the handlebars? See you on the next page !
