Duel Tracer 900 GT Vs V-Strom 1000 Adventure: services included
Yamaha hits a big blow (t) with its Tracer 900 GT 2018 and its ultra-complete standard equipment, suitcases included. This dynamic road with false trail airs is awaited around the corner … by the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 and its Adventure pack, in particular ! MNC duel.

Face to face. The redesigned front end of the Tracer 900 GT appropriately softens its plastic, a bit "Goldorack-esque" in its first version. The reduction in the width of its handlebars (- 16.5 mm) and its hand guards (- 100 mm between each end!) Plays a big role in this perception. More classic, the line of the V-Strom 1000 also appears a bit bland on its front part… |
We don’t bubble. Redesigned for 2018, the Yamaha’s bubble height adjustment is super easy to use: all you have to do is press a kind of pliers on its lower part to raise or lower the windshield while driving. The Suzuki introduced in 2017 a tilt adjustment system, which is activated without stopping by pushing on the screen. However, tools are needed to further vary its height over three levels, via screws and nuts. |
Electro. The Bosch adaptive ABS of the 2017 V-Strom has since 2017 been informed by a 5-axis inertial unit, which takes into account the inclination to modulate its interventions. In theory, this "cornering ABS" avoids crossing the skis … MNC played it small arm, and did not push the vice until planting the brakes full angle! Strangely, this IMU does not provide information on the traction control adjustable on two levels and disconnectable. All these safety nets work correctly and transparently, even if we regret the impossibility of deactivating the ABS during off-road trips … Note that the Suzuki also receives the "Easy Start System" which allows you to launch the engine with a single press on the starter and "Low RPM Assist" which increases the engine speed very slightly to avoid stalling in first. |
Electro (bis). In addition to compulsory ABS – which cannot be deactivated – the Tracer 900 GT is equipped with traction control that can be configured on two levels (1 or 2) when driving, throttle off, via a rocker on the left stalk. This disengageable system when stationary intervenes with finesse and gentleness. In addition, the ardor of its engine can be regulated thanks to three maps (A, B and Standard), a device absent on the Suzuki. The "Standard" mode is pleasant and without jerks, but significantly curbs the reactivity of the 3-leg. For arsouiller, the "A" mode is recommended, even if it is rather brutal. Mode "B" – the softest but very castrating – is not useless in the rain. Finally, the Yam ‘also receives a shifter as standard which operates when the gear is raised. Difficult to do better in terms of electronic staffing in this price range ! |
Pack your suitcase. With 55 liters of capacity, the Givi top-case included in the Adventure pack of the V-Strom 1000 is a real hold, which closes on two full-face helmets including a TT model with visor. Too bad that this adaptable equipment opens and closes with a different key from the motorcycle and that its very round shapes are more reminiscent of a scooter than a trail, was it road like the V-Strom… |
Counted space. Does your significant other not know how to go for the weekend without bringing a wardrobe of clothes and the equivalent of three cosmetic stores? Bad pick with the Tracer 900 GT, whose hard 22-liter suitcases encourage compromise: it will be the designer handbag or the overly chic pumps, but not both ! Joking aside, a full-face helmet does not fit into these suitcases which nevertheless have the quality of being in the colors of the motorcycle and of being locked with the Tracer 900’s ignition key. A very appreciable practical initiative on the go. Note that neither the Yamaha nor the Suzuki have a storage compartment and that their space under the saddle is limited, especially the V-Strom. |
Beats. Thecolor TFT screen of the Tracer 900 GT gives a nasty blow of old to the monochrome instrumentation of the V-Strom 1000. Still, the two are controlled from the handlebars and provide information on all important functions: two daily trips, time, the fuel level, the temperature of the air and the engine, the gear engaged and the consumption (average and instantaneous). All legible and clearly presented. |
Competitive front train. Fully adjustable inverted fork, 4-piston radial calipers and large brake discs: the V-Strom 1000 and Tracer 900 GT have a solid front end, worthy of sports bikes! This equipment is the source of very good directional control on the two rivals and powerful braking, to the advantage of the Yamaha in terms of bite. The Suzuki is however more convincing in terms of the rear brake. |
Spring. Both the V-Strom 1000 and the Tracer 900 GT receive a practical remote preload adjustment wheel at the rear. A significant advantage for adapting the attitude of the motorcycle during duo trips, loaded. Two, the Suzuki will highlight its more progressive damping, the pleasant "roundness" of its twin and its better saddle comfort. The Tracer annoys a duo because of its passenger footrests located too close to those of the pilot. |
A "saddle" that lasts. Yellow card for Yamaha and Suzuki, who did not see fit to install well padded saddles on their road bikes. The Tracer 900 GT is the worst off, because it is narrower and sloping. The Yamaha, on the other hand, is the most accessible thanks to its smaller width: two weights touch the ground in the low saddle position (850 mm), when a 1m75 pilot puts only one foot and one point on the non-adjustable saddle of the V-Strom. (850 mm), wider between the thighs. |
GT not against less vibrations … The 3-cylinder and the twin have in common a certain propensity to vibrate in the towers. Lacking rubber on its footrests, the Tracer 900 GT unpleasantly tickles the boots from 5000 rpm, before spreading to the hands. The V-Strom 1000 ‘, fitted with front-to-rear rubber, is more benevolent at this level. On the other hand, we appreciate the sobriety of each: from 5.39 to 6.57 l / 100 km for the Yam ‘and from 4.71 to 5.64 l / 100 km for the Suz’ measured by MNC during this duel in mode "ride". |
Heat ! Summer is good: the weather is fine, the roads have grip, the landscapes are illuminated … Yes, but it is also sometimes super hot: over 35 ° C during this MNC duel! Obviously, it heats up quickly under the helmet when we have to stop regularly to take pictures, take measurements and notes and share our impressions of the spasms! How do we complain of ease ?! |
