Argentinian GP – Miller (4th): "The race management had to make a difficult choice"
Surprising in many ways, the 2018 Argentinian GP was also harsh towards Jack Miller, an unfortunate poleman who could not pocket all the fruits of his daring even if he did not criticize the "flexible" application of the regulation. However, the Ducati Pramac rider saved 13 points for fourth place and finished 6th overall, just behind Marc Marquez. Debriefing.
Jack Miller, Ducati Pramac (1st in qualifying and 4th in race) : "I have to admit I’m a little disappointed because I didn’t manage to fight for the podium after leading the race for a long time. I made a mistake that cost me dearly. But to be honest, I am very happy with this weekend. We did an incredible job with the team. As for the race management’s decision on the grid, I think they must have made a difficult choice at a time of great stress"…

Site analysis : If Molière had analyzed the riders’ statements after the motorcycle Grand Prix, he would no doubt have found "that in gallant terms these things are put" … Because if wisdom and reason have often been lacking throughout this GP of Argentina, the words of the Australian about the incredible circus that played out during the start procedure appear by contrast as particularly diplomatic and measured !
By admitting only "a little disappointed" not to have been able to fight for the podium, Jack Miller concentrates on his race and evades the astonishing decision of the race direction which he could however have taken badly. Remember: Saturday afternoon at Termas de Rio Hondo, the Australian from the Pramac Racing team made a daring bet by competing in the slick tires, while the track – drying – is still largely wet following the rains of the morning.
- Argentinian GP MotoGP 2018 :
The bet works wonderfully since despite several, Honda defector Marc VDS, who scored his first – and only to date – MotoGP victory in, manages to turn in 1’47.153 while most of his rivals are still in rain tires! The Ducati-Pramac rider then signs his very first pole position in the premier class, the first for an Australian rider since Casey Stoner.
On Sunday, the daring 23-year-old driver persisted and took the start of the race on slicks – on a track that was always dry, with numerous traces of humidity which limited the choice of trajectories – while most of his competitors started out on tires rain. Except that just before the start, the pilots change their mind and return to the pit to set off again on slick tires! Jack Miller, who wisely took his first place on the grid, finds himself all alone waiting for the lights to turn green…
Normally, when a driver is absent on the grid at the time of the start, he has to start from the pit lane, which wastes his time. But considering that there was suddenly a "safety problem", the race management preferred not to apply this rule and decided to delay the start, in order to allow the whole field to start from the grid … D ‘incessant palaver then took place between the different teams, and the decision was taken to move everyone back three lines – except Miller of course, who kept his dearly acquired place !
Finally, the course of the race shows that Miller would not necessarily have benefited so much if the others had started from the pit lane: from the start he retained his advantage for two laps, but Marc Marquez then took the orders.
Thanks to the penalty inflicted on the HRC official – who had during the starting procedure and returned to the pits – the Ducati Pramac rider then resumed "his" place of leader, which he kept until the 17th lap before come out of turn 1 too wide. Crutchlow then takes the lead with Zarco in his wheel, while Miller is also passed by Rins.
Jack Miller’s performance is no less remarkable, especially as the two Ducati officials, Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo, did no better than 6th 22.5 seconds behind the winner for the Italian and 15th at more than 42 seconds for Mallorcan…
Finally, concerning the decision of the race director on the starting grid, Carmelo Ezpeleta remembers that "we had encountered a situation quite similar to the Sachsenring a few years ago (it was at, Ed) and almost all the drivers ( , Editor’s note) had started from the pit lane ". Unsurprisingly, the CEO of Dorna Sports who manages the rights of MotoGP believes that the decision to "launch a new starting procedure, shared by a large majority of teams, was taken for safety reasons and that it was the good choice".
