Austrian GP – Marquez (2nd): ” I thought I would find myself facing Andrea ”
Third in his 100th MotoGP race a week ago in Brno, Marc Marquez hoped to celebrate his 101st with a victory, on an Austrian circuit that is missing from his collection… The No. 93 Honda was wary of Dovizioso, as quick as him in qualifying. It was finally Lorenzo who beat him, once again.
Marc Marquez, Honda (1st in qualifying and 2nd in race): “I had decided to attack early on, so that I only had one Ducati with me on the final laps. At one point, I was the equivalent of a second ahead of both Ducatis and then as feared, my tire started to deteriorate. That’s what allowed them to come back to me ".
"I thought I was facing Andrea. All in all it was Jorge and he was very strong, the battle was really good! However, it is very complicated to fight against him. At each end of the straight line, he me was passing. I tried to defend myself as best I could by varying the trajectories, but nothing to do ".
“When I got to turn 3, I was pretty far away, but I said to myself ‘come on, let’s try’. I came in really hard and my two wheels started to slip. So I lost speed. , which allowed Jorge to come out better […] Anyway I gave everything. We did a good job, our bike was very efficient and especially under braking. In the end, I am therefore I’m pretty happy. I’m only losing five points in the championship, at least against Jorge. However, my lead now stands at 59 points ".
Site analysis: Taking into account the tire selection made by the drivers from the front row on the grid, then the first twelve laps achieved in the race, Marc Marquez fans believed that their idol would finally win on the Red Bull Ring, only circuit on the calendar (with Buriram, of course) to have resisted the quadruple MotoGP champion.
Armed with a hard tire – badass? – at the rear and benefiting from a small second lead shortly before halfway, many observers indeed considered the race folded, especially as Lorenzo with his pair of soft "rubber" tires seemed then stopper Dovizioso … After the halfway point, however, the physiognomy of the race has radically changed !
Reassembled like a cuckoo Swiss Austrian and taking advantage of a small gap of "Desmo Dovi" in the hairpin n ° 3, "Loren-show" isolated in the lead with his compatriot Marquez to fight a daunting battle in the very last laps … More combative that in Brno, the Marquez ant did not spare !
Using and abusing late braking and strong overtaking to try to win, Marc lost the race on the last lap in the famous turn n ° 3: stuck in the middle of the turn after having saved in extremis a loss of the before, the Honda rider was dropped by the Ducati … and by the outside !
Again beaten by Lorenzo – this is the fourth time in six races – Marc Marquez nonetheless adds a magnificent silver charm to his impressive 2018 collection and brings his lead in the provisional to 59 points. Many observers consider the championship folded. As much as this memorable Austrian race? Beware of those who put the cart before the "Red Bulls"…
