Anniversary model BMW R nineT / 5
50 years / 5 series and production in Berlin
The BMW R nineT / 5 is the anniversary model that BMW is bringing to the celebration of the 50th birthday of the BMW / 5 series and the Berlin Spandau plant. And in a limited number – but the manufacturer does not reveal how high this is.
Knee pads, double lining, chrome-plated mirrors and exhaust manifolds, wire-spoke wheels and the folds on the BMW telescopic fork R. nineT / 5 should be reminiscent of the original line five. The fender also gets the lupine blue metallic paint with double lining. The bench of the anniversary model is contoured according to the / 5 model and equipped with cross embossing, retaining straps and white reinforced edges. The market launch for the BMW R nineT / 5 is September 7, 2019; it will cost from 14,600 euros.
Since bright body colors were used for the first time for the original / 5 series, BMW opted for the lupine blue metallic paintwork for the R nineT / 5 anniversary model. In addition to the double lining, a dark gradient on the tank creates a three-dimensional effect. The engine, gearbox, fork dip tubes, wheel hubs and wheel spokes are made of aluminum silver or black.
Further features of the BMW R nineT / 5 are:
- 320-millimeter double disc brake at the front
- ABS as standard
- ASC (Automatic Stability Control) as standard
- Heated grips as standard
- Boxer engine with 1,170 cm³ displacement and 110 PS (81 kW)
- maximum torque of 116 Nm at 6,000 rpm; Maximum speed 8,500 / min
- Spoked wheels, 3.5 x 17 inches at the front, 5.5 x 17 inches at the rear

The 17 liter sheet steel tank is provided with knee pads, double lines and a “50 years / 5” badge.
Despite the anniversary model and limited number of pieces, the BMW R nineT / 5 can be customized ex works – for example with a different exhaust system or a single seat. Like all R nineT models, the anniversary model also has a frame concept that consists of three components: a front main frame, a rear main frame with an integrated frame part and a pillion frame. Thanks to the detachable pillion frame, the new R nineT / 5 also offers scope for changing the visual appearance according to individual requirements. The seat height for the driver is around 825 millimeters.
BMW / 5 series and the factory in Berlin Spandau
In the mid-1960s, automobile production in the BMW works in Munich increased sharply, whereupon motorcycle production was outsourced to Berlin Spandau in 1969. Production started there with 400 employees who made 30 models per day. At the same time, it started with the / 5 series, which was a completely new development at the time: a new double loop tubular frame made of steel and a swing arm with two oil pressure struts at the rear and a hydraulically damped telescopic fork at the front, long spring travel and significantly greater ground clearance than the previous BMW motorcycles Features of the most innovative BMW series. The light alloy rims with lower unsprung masses and the large-sized duplex full-hub brakes were also an important innovation.

The folding bellows on the telescopic fork, which protect against stone chips, for example, but also against fine-grained dirt that continues to clog the Simmerrings to this day, are completely based on the historical model.
The two-cylinder boxer engine was also a completely new development, with 32 hp in the R 50/5, 40 hp in the R 60/5 and 50 hp in the top model R 75/5. The engine’s crankshaft is forged in one piece and has slide bearings for the main crankshaft bearings and the bearings for the connecting rods, while the previous models still had roller bearings. In addition, the camshaft was now no longer above, but below the crankshaft, so the pipes for the push rods for valve actuation are located below the cylinders made of light metal.
“The mixture preparation is carried out on the R 75/5 by new constant pressure carburettors with a vacuum membrane instead of the slide carburettors used previously. As a result, the R 75/5 shines with a particularly direct throttle response, very good acceleration behavior and low fuel consumption. And as a special comfort attribute, the R 75/5 also has an electric starter ”, so the passage in the press release.
The production figures at the Berlin BMW plant rose quickly, and in 1970 there were already 12,287 vehicles leaving the factory. When the / 5 series was discontinued in July 1973, BMW had already produced a total of 68,956 motorcycles in Berlin.
