Two-cylinder supermoto runabouts

Supermoto look and powerful middle class V2: Aprilia’s Dorsoduro 750 has always been the fun mobile of the Italians. With the update to 900 cubic capacity and an expanded equipment package, the grin on the Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 should now be even wider. The driving report shows whether that works.

This is how workdays can start: A sun-drenched Alpine panorama spreads out in front of you, delicious cappuccino is steaming in your hand, and your eye is looking at a neatly lined up parade of the new ones A.prilia Dorsoduro 900. The next moment the men from Noale announce: “Grab some, they are full. Follow the guide and have fun. ”Who can say no to that? Quickly put on the helmet and occupied one of the two-cylinder Supermoto runabouts.

New TFT display is convincing

What is immediately noticeable: Aprilia has given the Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 a boost in terms of display, donated a fine TFT instrument that changes between light and dark depending on the incidence of light. The readability is great. Adjustable levers for the brake and clutch on the handlebars and for the feet round off the good first impression. As if by themselves, the hands grab the comfortably wide, butted handlebars, and the bottom finds the right place on the 870 millimeter high, flat-cut bench.

There are three driving modes to choose from

After the first pressure on the starter, the 90-degree V-engine is immediately there, babbling sonorously from the pert pots in the rear. With manual force reduced by 15 percent, the new clutch should score points, but it is still a long way from servo-assisted models. The first gear engages safely, the engine hangs cold clean on the gas. Since the first few meters are more relaxed, there is time to take a closer look at the features in the cockpit. Sport can be read there and refers to the driving mode. The Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 has three of them on board, Touring and Rain are still available.

Standard 95 hp

The latter cuts the standard 95 hp to a good 70 horsepower, and speaks rather cautiously. From touring mode, the Aprilia Dorsoduro 900’s engine, which has grown from 750 to almost 900 cm³ by increasing its stroke by eleven millimeters, can develop its full potential. Since Aprilia has also adapted a new, lighter ride-by-wire including ECU from the V4 models (Marelli 7 SM), the unit reacts with a 90 degree cylinder angle, but also in sport mode with the most aggressive response, still without jolts and load changes on gas commands, which is why the most aggressive engine mapping can remain in it.

Three-stage traction control new on board

Another new feature of the Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 is the three-stage traction control, which can be turned off completely if necessary. Even the first short sprints from the curves around Madonna di Campiglio make it clear: If the three appears on the display as the most defensive variant, it just flashes excitedly in the cockpit and the propulsion is cut off too early. There are no such complaints in stages two and one. Whereby the mounted Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier D 209 offer full grip, even with the now brisk line of the guide. What they lack, however, are feedback and self-absorption. And with their set-up moment via longitudinal grooves, they do not collect any plus points.

Displacement plus did really good

The Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 is responsible for this again, which is mainly due to its engine. The increase in displacement did her really good. In addition: In contrast to the Shiver 900 (driving report edition 14/2017) it has a shorter final gear ratio, has a 15-tooth pinion, while the naked sister has one with 16 teeth. This is less noticeable when pulling through in sixth gear than when firing out of the bends and turns on site. The engine quickly turns towards its torque peak of 90 Newton meters at 6,500 revolutions. That is eight Newton meters more than the 750 predecessor on which the engine is based.

Weight savings

In addition to the extended stroke with the same 92 millimeter bore, the Italians donated even lighter pistons and bolts to the supermoto two-cylinder and revised the oil supply, which now makes an oil cooler obsolete. So that the dynamics can collect even more focus points, a new, 41-series Kayaba upside-down fork is used in the Aprilia Dorsoduro 900, which is almost a pound lighter than the previously assembled 43-series model. In addition, there are even lighter rims, which are intended to reduce the weight of the rotating masses by more than two kilograms.

Reliable thanks to narrow and wide radii

Good prerequisites for jagged curve fun, which can only be felt in direct comparison. Because right now, with the joyful exploration of the lean angle, the chassis demands attention – namely at the rear. In contrast to the fork, which guides the front wheel comfortably and tightly enough in spite of 170 millimeters of travel, heavy riders can sometimes slip out of the curve at the rear, as the Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 wants to choose the wide line by itself. The Sachs damper with 160 millimeters of spring travel at the rear can be adjusted in terms of preload and rebound, i.e. the former can be quickly increased and the rebound damping is closed by half a turn. The Dorsoduro, which, according to Aprilia, weighs 212 kilograms, is already turning more precisely around the corner, flies – enthusiastically moved – reliably through narrow and wide radii.

The new one is available from dealers for 9,990 euros

That puts you in a good mood, to which the brakes do their part. The radial pliers on the fork bite firmly into the two 320 washers. At most, the dosability should be more sensitive. If the pressure in the system rises too spontaneously, a two-channel ABS from Continental intervenes to prevent the front wheel from locking. The bottom line is a big grin after the first contact, if one or the other would like to get a few more horses out of the top, after all, the 750 had a similar top performance. But: Aprilia also wants to offer the Dorsoduro to A2 beginners despite its sporty and aggressive look, which is why 95 hp is over. You are more pleased about the lid at the price. The Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 is available from dealers for 9,990 euros. That is exactly as much as for the previous model, only that there is now a full torque surcharge including upgraded equipment. Aprilia’s street supermoto fans will be delighted.
