The best for last?

With the Aprilia RSV4 RF, Aprilia is the last manufacturer to send its commercially available superbike into the race for the 2015 season. Because of the world championship title alone, people in Noale are very self-confident. Rightly so, that had to be seen on the Misano race track.

The Aprilia R.SV4 RF is the best superbike ever “, the Aprilia marketing department made clear at the press presentation. This self-confidence comes from the fact that the small bike manufacturer from Noale does not necessarily sell most of the super sports bikes, but with the current title in the Superbike World Championship and the strengthened RSV4 series machine, it is on par with BMW, Ducati and the Japanese.

The best for last?

Aprilia RSV4 RF and the new top injection. The variable intake funnels have been redesigned. The same applies to the cylinder heads, the inlet and outlet channels of which are machined to optimize flow. The valves are now made of titanium and the springs are new. The combustion chambers are also finely finished. The compression ratio is now 13.6: 1 (previously 13.0: 1).

The basic shape of the crankshaft housing has not changed

In addition, the moving masses in the cylinder head and crankcase have been significantly reduced. In the case of the camshafts with new cam profiles alone, the mass was reduced by 600 grams. While the basic shape of the crankshaft housing of the Aprilia RSV4 RF was not changed, the technicians used a new casting process to remove 1.3 kilograms from the upper crankcase with greater rigidity. The entire oil circuit is new, more volume was created in the engine for optimal oil distribution, and the oil now sloshes significantly deeper in the engine, which is why the previous sight glass had to be replaced with an oil stick.

A long list of measures that does not end with the drive. The engine sits a few millimeters lower in the chassis to lower the Aprilia RSV4 RF’s center of gravity. As with a real racing motorcycle, the motor position as well as the steering head angle and the position of the swing arm are adjustable. The swing arm grew in length by four millimeters, the fork offset by two. The RF as a limited series naturally offers the Ohlins fork and the shock absorber, which RR customers can order in a Race Pack, as well as the RF forged wheels.

The Aprilia RSV4 RF greedily rushes into battle

From the first corner it becomes clear that you have jumped on a racing motorcycle. Greedy, almost a bit nervous, the Aprilia RSV4 RF rushes into battle and underlines after the first few laps that it has fantastic handling that allows almost anything. But that also makes work on the chassis necessary, because in the basic setup the Aprilia wobbled mightily on the brakes towards the turning point. The RSV4 also pumped heavily out of the corners at first. The latter may be due to the powerful engine that delivers full power in all three modes, but even in race mode it now accelerates very gently and shoots very homogeneously through the speeds.

Finally, the pumping could largely be stopped by making corrections to the chassis. It turned out that, on the one hand, a broad setting range is offered, on the other hand, even the smallest changes have an effect. The first impression: absolutely professional material that requires the appropriate know-how for the very fast laps. The feedback was definitely a dream, the Aprilia RSV4 RF let you immediately feel what was going on under the pilot.

Bosch ABS is very sporty

The brake of the Aprilia RSV4 RF is easy to dose. The Bosch ABS is very sporty and allows heavy stoppies, especially in race mode. Nevertheless, the Aprilia’s electronics package, which has been further optimized, is a stunner on the racetrack. The traction control, which can be adjusted while driving, works so well that even a pumping tail does not prevent the driver from opening the gas very early at the exit of a curve.

If you order the extended Race Pack, you can even enjoy corner-to-corner voting on 15 routes in Europe using the data from the Superbike World Championship using an app and smartphone. It worked so well in Misano that almost two seconds were found straight away. The new Aprilia RSV4 RF is definitely a real racer that will be able to prove its qualities against the current superbikes in the next edition in the big track test at the Lausitzring. She is undoubtedly one of the best.
