Aprilia’s updated super sports car, the RSV4 RF is here. Here, too, Euro 4 shows its effects.

Not only the excellent handling is retained, the Aprilia should now be around a second faster on the racetrack.

With the two-chamber system of the exhaust, the RSV4 is not as vocal as the previous model. From 5000 rpm upwards, however, you can hear no difference to the loud Akrapovic.

Overall, the V4 engine actually lost weight and internal friction could be reduced. The Euro 4 exhaust with the chamber system and other attachments are significant.

At 5000 rpm the exhaust flap opens and the exhaust gases are released through the larger of the two chambers.

Aprilia RSV4 RF in the PS driving report
Euro 4 sound check
Content of
So far, the Aprilia RSV4 RF has appeared as one of the most powerful and powerfully voiced super athletes. The test will show whether Euro 4 has stuck with it.
The Aprilia technician looks serious at lunch. Concentrated, he looks at the plate of parmesan and ham in front of him. Then he looks up, takes a deep breath and says: "Very difficult." It’s about the tiresome topic of Euro 4. The new Aprilia R.Trimming SV4 RF to the emission standard was obviously a problematic affair. As a result, the Aprilia weighs an additional 2.5 kilograms in model year 2017. Even the otherwise so tricky engineers from Noale could not avoid giving their stylish superbike a voluminous rear silencer as well as prescribed attachments such as activated carbon filters and tank ventilation. The exhaust has two internal chambers plus a flap system: this flap only opens at 5,000 rpm and allows the exhaust gas to escape through the larger of the two chambers. With this original exhaust, the machine causes significantly less riot than the previous model. Above 5,000 tours, however, the RSV4 continues to have a powerful voice and is only a little behind the open Akrapovic flute from the accessories – almost all bikes are equipped with it during the press presentation.

Euro 4 sound check
Automatic switch with blipper function on board
Regardless of the restrictive emissions standards, the new model should now be around a second faster on the racetrack, according to Aprilia. Although it remained at a nominal 201 hp peak power. However, subtle changes have been made to the V4 unit that reduce the overall weight of the engine and internal friction. In addition to the linear power development, the high level of running smoothness is noticeable. The throttle response is also great: even with the most direct response (mapping "Track") the Aprilia RSV4 RF accelerates smoothly in all speed ranges and with perfectly controllable thrust. The V4 provides enough power in every situation, and thanks to the new ECU, the machine turns even slightly higher than before. Beating the Italian beauty right down to the limiter is not always worthwhile, however, as the performance seems to flatten a little shortly beforehand. The automatic gearshift with blipper function helps when working on fast lap times. The impulse from the switch foot must be clear and precise. Every now and then the system refused to function in a non-reproducible way, the corridor would not go in.
Real handling crack
What has already distinguished the Aprilia RSV4 RF in the past was its excellent handling at the level of a lightweight 600 super sports car. The new model easily holds this level! The machine is known to react sensitively to the driver’s seating position and weight distribution. When accelerating out of the way, the rider would do well to actively lean forward to counteract the wheelie tendency and to keep the motorcycle steady. But the RSV4 hits the cornering points as usual. In addition, the thousand drives in an inclined position over the front wheel with incorruptible accuracy. Correcting a track or driving a few centimeters closer is always possible! The Ohlins components now have softer springs, which should provide better damping properties, especially at high speeds. The machine takes hard braking and accelerating out of it with ease, the previous model exhibited greater sensitivity here. On the other hand, the not quite as sharp brake when throwing the anchor spoils the feeling for the front wheel. The new rubbers will be to blame. Apart from the new 330 mm discs, the braking system has not changed, and it won’t be because of the thicker discs.
Pit lane limiter and multimedia system
The APRC driver assistance systems have also been revised. At level four of eight, the traction control of the Aprilia RSV4 RF intervenes late (tires: Pirelli Supercorsa SC1 rear, SC2 front) and shows the finest control quality. The wheelie control (three levels) works perfectly with acceleration wheelies on the first level and is really helpful. But if the front wheel rises too far, the electronics completely take the juice out for a longer moment. Other electronic gadgets are a pit lane limiter, cruise control and a multimedia system. Who knows, maybe listening to music during race training will have a positive effect on your lap time…
