2008 vintage
The Shiver is Aprilia’s big novelty in the villainous 750 cc roadster segment in 2007. It quickly evolved in 2008 with 3 handlebar behavior settings, a wider saddle, larger passenger grips, the appearance of ABS, an inground saddle available. Very far from a copy of Tuono (from the RSV), the Shiver is a brand new motorcycle, both in terms of frame, engine and lines, benefiting for the first time from the “Ride by Wire” system (electronic control of ignition). And for wheelie enthusiasts, it has been designed not to be afraid of lift-off. Technologically, the injection of the Shiver takes several parameters into account, including engine speed, gear engaged, temperature, air pressure to control the opening of the intake throttles. The L-twin announces in addition to new features on this type of motorcycle and in particular 3 types of injection mapping adjustable on the handlebars for 95 horsepower advertised. The whole thing gives a very sporty general impression, making one imagine an RSV version 750 cm 3. To see if the ramage is up to expectations and how it all operates and on what playing field …..
Discovery
The Shiver immediately impresses with its billhook cut lines, its tubular trellis frame highlighting the Sachs shock, the exhaust under the saddle. Then we notice the thinness of the rim sticks, the radial-mounted brakes, the white indicators, the angular mirrors and we really admire the double exhaust outlet of the most beautiful effect. The finish is excellent without false note. In short, she is a beautiful Italian and she throws it !
In the saddle
On the counter side, we find a Tuono inspiration with the analog tachometer on the left. It is on the right that the digital meter displays all the information at the same time: speed, gear ratio engaged, partial trip, clock, engine temperature, letter indicating the injection mapping setting (T for "touring", R for “rain” or S for “sport”)…. The contrast is even adjustable! Note that the R mode also limits the power to 65 horsepower.
The wide and high handlebars are well placed and the hands are placed there in a natural way. The handlebar and footrest assembly is homogeneous for an instinctive and pleasant overall position.
The wide saddle makes the bike taller than the official saddle height suggests at just 810mm. In fact, the 1.70 rider struggles to touch down and the height is more like that of a trail. Large sizes will immediately find their marks; the Shiver is made for them.
Contact
The Shiver snorts with a deep sound distilling a bewitching tone. First…. it starts on a trickle of gas from 2,000 rev / min smoothly. Soft in the "rain" position, flexible in the "touring" position, the Shiver is dynamic in the "Sport" position, offering what you would expect from a real 750 roadster..
In the city
The engine is a treat, rather generous in sensations and available from 3,000 rpm to then go up regularly or even quickly in the towers. All of this ensures good fun in the city. The handling is there, reinforced by the wide handlebars. Limited turning radius and saddle height are the only downsides.
Highway
The Shiver sets off with will and violence on the motorway. At 5,000 rpm, it is still only 130 km / h and therefore very far from the red zone.
But the lack of protection makes high speeds quickly tiring, from 130 km / h. This is in addition to a small 16-liter tank and a significant consumption that will make it stop every 170 km at the pump: too often.
Departmental
It is therefore with real pleasure that the Shiver is returning to the county roads. Its torque available from low revs – even 2,000 rpm – makes it possible to give sensations very quickly. From 5,000 rpm, pickups are lively and up to 9,000 rpm.
The engine is a treat and she quickly becomes playful when it comes to jumping from corner to corner. Sport mode prompts you to turn the handle with real character and lively sensations. It is the chassis – and especially the front fork and its disunity with the rear – which then forces a reduction in speed, precision not necessarily being there, due to a light front. Do not hesitate to load the front with a more tilted position to improve behavior that could surprise an overly optimistic pilot..
The Shiver is much more enjoyable as soon as the pace slows down or in the "R" position, when the attack gives way more to the willingness to take advantage and reel. And yet, the S-driving pleasure is really huge with a really lively engine..
Braking
The front brakes have borrowed elements from the brand’s RSV sports cars and you can feel it with the ease of handling in addition. Powerful with good progressiveness, they are largely up to the expectations of the bike, or even above.
The back feed is an honest retarder.
Comfort
The saddle, wide, is comfortable for the pilot.
On the passenger side, the space is much smaller and leads the passenger to find themselves seated on their hands. To this is added the happiness of the pots on the saddle with the heating that goes with it: pleasant in winter but slightly unbearable in summer.
Convenient
Sportmax Qualifier tires fit him well.
Consumption
The reserve indicator lights up readily from 150 km in sport mode, even from 130 km in very sporty driving or only 190 km in touring mode. There is usually enough left to do about fifty kilometers on reserve for a maximum range of 250 km. The fault lies in particular with the small tank of 15 liters. On a daily basis, the average consumption is around 6 liters per hundred, with the possibility of going down to 5.3 liters in rain mode and up to 9 liters in sport mode..
Conclusion
Aggressive look, pleasant displacement, expressive engine, the Shiver 750 SL is ideal for the motorcyclist looking for a motorcycle with a good face with a generous engine. Below the Tuono in terms of stiffness, it is more suited to coiled riding in "T" mode than to muscular riding in "S" mode where it may surprise the overly optimistic rider. The choice of the changeable motor character on the handlebars is a real plus in terms of safety and comfort of daily use: "rain" mode for days of difficult awakening and "sport" for days in great shape. A bit expensive at 8,159 € compared to roadsters like the Z or the Hornet, it will delight the 40-year-old biker who wants to be able to have fun without having to play the pilot.
