A2-compatible middle class bike

At first it looked like Aprilia was about to sideline the 750 V2 engine. Then the new Aprilia Shiver 900 came out of the sinking – modernized and with a displacement upgrade.
The 90-degree V2 engine sounds dull and grumpy, and its stroke has increased by eleven to 67.4 millimeters. The new one stayed with top performance A.prilia Shiver 900 with 95 hp. As many horses as the Shiver 750 gathered ten years ago. On the other hand, the maximum torque of 90 Newton meters in the revised engine is already available at 6,500 rpm. Good for pressure from the corners!

A2-compatible middle class bike
The Shiver 900 is therefore also available as an A2-compatible motorcycle. In view of the new price of less than 9,000 euros, the machine in the middle class could win if the performance is right.
First the lame guide, then the fast one
First of all, the pack of journalists twitches after a guide who doesn’t seem to be in a hurry. Okay, then just cozy first. The Aprilia Shiver 900 accelerates as smoothly as butter in rain mode, which is limited to 70 hp. Full power is available in touring mode and the response remains soft. The sports program is a bit more jagged. It can stay that way now! On board is a slimmed-down version of the APRC assistance systems from the V4 burners, which includes a switchable ABS and three-stage traction control. Of course, can also be deactivated! As is typical for Aprilia, switching back and forth between the various programs and assistance levels also works while driving. The three-stage traction control intervenes fairly smoothly, but also relatively early. When the journalist troop is led through the mountains in the afternoon by a more jagged tour guide, we switch them off.
In order to be able to embed the electronics, the new Aprilia Shiver 900 received the Marelli 7SM engine control of the V4 models. The new ride-by-wire system also comes from the Tuono or the RSV4. Mechanically, the Shiver V2 engine received lighter pistons with new bolts and a friction-reducing coating. The crankshaft has also been revised and rebalanced.
Bearish torque from minimalist speeds
And what’s the point? Well, as an ultra-lively sport twin with rapid revving, this drive cannot boast. The V2 is more of a quiet companion and delivers great torque from minimalist speeds. If things are going to be very sporty, the Aprilia Shiver 900 can still be squeezed out wonderfully in second and third gear in the thicket of curves in South Tyrol. Only at the top just before the limiter does the engine run out of breath. The gear changes work cleanly with the accurate gearbox, the hydraulic clutch is perfectly controllable. Anchoring in the last groove requires a precise assessment of the remaining braking zone. Although the stoppers reliably reduce speed, they definitely require a firm grip.
At the head of the troop, the guide rushes ahead on a V4 Tuono, the Shiver pack bravely follows. On the winding track, the V2’s top performance is enough to keep you going. But the Aprilia Shiver 900 does not want to give in so greedily despite the new, lighter wheels. She moves significantly further arcs than the guide on his Tuono. The 900 needs a clear impulse to turn. In return, the naked bike is stable in an inclined position and does not stir with the rear when accelerating out. The chassis (new Kayaba fork, rebound and preload just as adjustable on the shock absorber) is fully up to the engine power.
However, the first Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier D 209 tires stand in the way of nimble handling and razor-sharp steering behavior. The rubbers appear stiff, which is noticeably reflected in the handling of the motorcycle. Initial tires in the mid-range segment often represent a compromise for manufacturers. Most of the time, they are primarily intended to give the motorcycle good straight-line stability and must be inexpensive. So put on a few more nimble tires and the Aprilia Shiver 900 becomes a real all-rounder for the fun bourgeoisie at a reasonable price!
