A look at the European standard that back protectors for motorcyclists must meet does not help either. Various test procedures are specified and limit values for impact protection are determined – which, however, corresponds to dry laboratory physics and only partially says something about the actual biomechanical reality.
There is no true or false on the test bench
According to the standard, a back protector of performance level one may allow an average of 18 kilonewtons of residual force to pass through – but a human bone can break even with a load of less than ten kilonewtons. After all, so say proponents of the standard, this is how the worst-case scenario is described and the performance of the back protection under extreme loads is assessed. During the test, an impact at almost 20 km / h is simulated – whereby the energy is not distributed over a large area over the entire surface of the protector, but hits the size of a fist.
The individual manufacturers approach this test scenario in very different ways. Dainese, who see themselves as the inventor of the back protector, have been using a hard shell construction for a long time. Their approach: The selective impact should be distributed over the largest possible area and harmful load peaks should be avoided. At the same time, the hard surface should offer effective protection against penetration. This is neither required nor tested in the standard. But Dainese draws on decades of experience in equipping professional racing drivers. There it was shown that penetration protection can be useful in order to minimize the severity of back injuries as well as possible. Some other manufacturers also use this shell or hard foam principle.

Back protector must act like a crumple zone
In contrast, there are providers who swear by the use of viscoelastic foams. The principle: The back protector has to act like a crumple zone and distribute the applied energy over a long period of time. With this type of construction, the force should increase very gently. The goal on the test bench: a force-time curve with as flat a hump as possible, no steep jagged edges.
They argue that from a biomechanical point of view it is precisely the jerky impact that breaks the bone. With a slower increase in force, on the other hand, you can rely on the natural elasticity of the bones – so the approach of the soft foam advocates. There is no true or false on the test bench, just bare figures and the gratifying fact that almost all providers adhere to the specified limit values. Some meanwhile even undercut the stricter requirements of performance level two by almost half and also score with a great fit and a comfortable seat.

To make it clear right away: Most textile or leather jackets do not come with a back protector from the factory. Even if the superficial finger test simulates protection. Usually there is only thin padding in the pockets. If you want real protection, you have to pay extra. The question remains: a retrofit protector that fits perfectly into the jacket, or a separate solution as in this test – back protectors to strap on or as a vest?
Those who wear a tight-fitting leather suit are usually better off with the built-in solution. Depending on the design, the extra protector could otherwise press uncomfortably. Strap-ons or vests are more recommended for textile suits. This ensures that the protectors are always firmly attached to the body. Ideally, there is even a version with integrated joint protectors.

When trying on, it’s not just the size that counts. The standard stipulates that the protector must cover a certain area of the back. But not universally, but individually. For this you have to know your own shoulder / waist distance, which is measured as shown in the picture. Each protector shows the size for which it is approved.
On the TuV test bench

Based on the back protector standard, all test candidates are tested by TuV Rheinland. A surcharge in the center, two more at possible weak points.
Our first address when it comes to testing protectors: the incorruptible drop test bench from TuV Rheinland in Cologne. In free fall, a five-kilo drop weight, which is modeled on a curb, rushes onto the protector from a height of one meter. The kinetic energy on impact is 50 joules, an anvil equipped with a measuring cell registers the residual force that is let through. The test procedure is regulated exactly according to the European standard. EN 1621-2 applies to back protectors; the original version dates from 2003. A new version has been in effect since this year and is used immediately for certification.
The latest generation of protectors will in future be recognizable by the year 2014, but those certified according to the previous standard (most of them being tested) may still be sold. However, some test samples have already been certified according to the preliminary versions of the current standard (recognizable by the “prEN” label). The well-known two performance levels with the respective limit values, which are calculated as the mean value from five individual strokes, remain valid. What is essentially new is that the protectors are now also tested in different climates (high humidity, high and low temperatures).

All 17 back protectors in this test are certified according to performance level two, the weaker level one is now almost no longer offered. And even the nine kilonewtons of residual force permitted in level two are now clearly undercut by a number of providers.
