At 64, Margot gets on a motorcycle for the first time and just drives off. 18,000 kilometers to the east. Two filmmakers accompanied the adventurous pensioner who didn’t even have a motorcycle license.

“The idea of ​​filming on the go – just in case – came up about two weeks before departure. At this point in time, however, a film was not yet in the planning stage; that only happened on the way.” Fortunately, we say! Because after we saw the trailer and some background information about the film “Over borders” have read, we are eagerly awaiting the result.

Margot meets the filmmaker after 7,000 kilometers. Johannes Meier and Paul Hartmann accompany the adventurous pensioner, who previously worked as a qualified social worker. The three have known each other for years from their joint voluntary theater work at the Eschwege Young Theater.

On tour without a motorcycle license

Particularly amazing: when Margot starts her journey in a small Hessian village, she doesn’t have a motorcycle license – you do “old gray rag” but allowed driving with motorized two-wheelers up to 125 cm³ displacement. So the choice fell on the Honda XR 125, because it should be all-terrain, the small machine. But now she has caught up with her motorcycle license and wants to leave for India, Thailand and Laos in late autumn 2019.

One of the greatest challenges was the difficult slope conditions with rain, mud and slush in the thin air at more than 4,000 meters above the Kyzyl-Art-Pass from Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan.

What was the worst moment on the way, what was the best?

On the way, the worst moment was the moment when I fell and realized that I was injured. The motorcycle crashed after me and hit my ankle with an iron edge. Despite the motorcycle boots, the ankle was almost split, the fibula and a cervical vertebra were dislocated.

The most beautiful moment was the sight of the overwhelming mountains in the Pamir along the Chinese border in Tajikistan, when I had mastered the hard mud driveway at the Kyzyl-Art-Pass at an altitude of approx. 4,300 m.

How often did you want to throw it down and take the next plane home?

I thought of giving up in Gera when the motorcycle kept going off for some inexplicable reason and no workshop could find the fault. I wanted to have the Honda brought back home and travel on without it …

What was before So what was your working life like??

I am a qualified social pedagogue and have worked in youth, senior citizens, girls’ and volunteer work, in recent years in particular in the field of promoting voluntary refugee aid. I was also the municipal women’s and gender equality officer. At the same time as this part-time work in the public service, I am still self-employed as a legal supervisor for various supervisory courts and as a team leader in the outdoor area of ​​a low rope course. I am a volunteer mayor in my village.

Impressive calculation: zero motorcycle license plus one pensioner equals 18,046 kilometers of motorcycle trip.

How did you come up with the idea of ​​making the trip?

In 2009 I traveled with a good friend on the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow (Russia) to Ulan Baatar (Mongolia). On the return flight over the Altai Mountains, I vowed to come back to Central Asia. I was fascinated by the landscape and impressed by the hospitality of the people.

How long did the thought ripen in you?

I have been planning this since 2009 “return” first with a mule. The entry with this animal is difficult due to the conditions (long quarantine times) and I would have had to drag it over roads used by trucks. So, following the advice of my son Phil, who is also a motorcycle enthusiast, I decided to buy the little Honda. The specific preparations (route, weather, border crossings, visa requirements, material list, etc.) took about a year and a half.

Did you save money for this or did you have enough what was available to you every month??

During the trip, I spent around 38 euros a day on gasoline, accommodation, food, repairs, etc. For visas, vaccinations and equipment, quite a bit of money was collected before the trip. But since I planned the trip well in advance, my available financial resources were sufficient for all expenses.

How did the contact with the film team come about??

I have known the two cuties from the film team for years from their joint voluntary theater work at the Eschwege Young Theater. I work there as a director and I am often on stage with the two of them in different plays. We are friends. The idea of ​​filming on the go – just in case – came up about two weeks before departure. At this point in time, however, a film was not yet planned; that only happened on the way.

Conclusion

Yes, the offer in the genre “Travel film” is growing rapidly. Most of the time we, the audience, sit in the armchair, feverish and sympathize, but keep our thanks “no time”, “no money” and “far too dangerous and exhausting” the safe distance to adventure. Margot shows us in the film “Over borders”, that none of these are reasons not to dare the adventure – if you want to. Because the film also takes viewers who do not want to travel almost 20,000 kilometers by motorcycle on a wonderful journey.
