Aprilia RSV mille

Mille…

… grazie, Aprilia. Sometimes the lack of need on the part of manufacturers helps you discover new products. Unmasked for MOTORRAD readers: the Aprilia RSV mille, born in 2004.

The scene is well known that Aprilia has been a hot topic in the super sports fire with RSV mille for years. However, the competition did not sleep and continued to develop diligently. In terms of performance, Honda set the standard with the VTR 1000 SP-2 and Ducati with the 998 S and R at around 135 hp. Aprilia’s top model, the Mille R, cannot keep up with 125 hp. And the normal Mille does not lag far behind a 998 and 999 in terms of top performance, but it does in terms of performance. So Aprilia has to step up. By 2004 at the latest it should be ready: A completely new RSV mille will be on display in the dealers’ showrooms.
Usually, the manufacturers hold back with the successor model for as long as possible. The risk that the old machine will otherwise no longer be sold is too great. The Aprilia test drivers were obviously not aware of this wisdom of the marketing strategists, as they drove calmly with the prototype at a public race training session in Rijeka. And that’s not all. During the lunch break, they simply parked the machine against the pit wall and left. So an attentive reader had time and a camera ready to photograph this very special Aprilia.
What he got in front of the lens is thrilling. The 2004 Mille obviously only has the basic layout in common with its predecessor. The 60-degree V2 will still work in a light metal bridge frame. Otherwise everything is different. The machine looks much narrower, lower and lighter. Aggressively crouched forward, the front adorned with a central inlet between the two headlights that greedily sucked in even while stationary, signaling the thousands of aggressiveness.
Turn signals integrated into the mirrors and the rear make the Mille appear much more valuable than before. Beautiful: the rear light integrated as a band in the hump. A look into the cockpit also reveals a new beginning. The Aprilia ascetic is limited to an analog tachometer with an integrated multifunction display. That’s how it has to be for a real super sports car.
In order to create space for the exhaust system, which is now equipped with two pots, the rear swing arm was curved. The upper strand of the chain therefore leads through a tunnel in the left swing arm. The finest Ohlins spring elements are used at the front and rear, which are fully adjustable at least on the prototype. The new frame, stiffer and yet lighter due to a special profile, has an inlet channel to the airbox in the steering head area. This can build up a ram-air effect at high speeds and thus provide a few additional horsepower.
The new V2 should produce a good 140 horses. And, according to the participant in the race training, they are good for a good push. The new Mille turns much higher than its predecessor and can certainly compete with Japanese 1000cc four-cylinder engines. With a full tank, the RSV should weigh less than 210 kilograms, making it the lightest V2 super sports car.
M.Of course, there is still a bit of speculation. In addition, the Aprilians still have a good year to finish developing their new baby. Some of the characteristics can change. One thing is already certain, however. Until then, they will be a little more cautious in public. Because the new one makes the old one look really old.
