Aprilia RX 125
Aprilia RX / SX 125 (2018) in the driving report
Individual 125cc
The 125cc market is growing again. In Europe and especially in Germany. Aprilia knows that too and completes its eight-liter range with an Enduro and a Supermoto. The sporty RS and the undisguised Tuono are now joined by the Aprilia RX 125 as an enduro and the Aprilia SX 125 as a supermoto.
Aprilia is rightly proud of this wide range of entry-level products. As in Tuono and RS, the Aprilia RX 125 and Aprilia also come S.X 125 of the 124 cm³ four-stroke engine was used. However, Aprilia tightened the vote, clearly noticeable. If the single-cylinder manufactured by Zongshen in the small Tuono only really got going from 7,000 tours, the injection engine in the long-legged sisters pulls through very evenly and powerfully. Nevertheless: Both models require frequent shift work, but the six gears can be sorted well. There is also agreement on the rest of the construction. Bridge frame and swing arm made of steel, plastic engine protection, LED rear light, stylish plastics. The high-lying exhaust tumbles quietly on and off-road. The processing is decent for the called price. The wide handlebars with adjustment marks, the folding gear lever and removable pillion pegs show a love of detail. But if you are looking for sharp edges and unsightly welds, you will find them.
Differences between the RX and the SX
Identical hereditary factors in the chassis. 41 mm upside-down fork at the front, suspension strut with progressive deflection at the rear. 240 mm of travel at the front contrasts with 200 mm (Aprilia SX 125) and 220 mm (Aprilia RX 125) at the rear. The sporty, tough set-up paints a sudden picture of the ground, but fits the nature of the machines. Only on asphalt of the “patchwork” type does the journey resemble a jolting ride. When it comes to tires, the RX and SX go different ways depending on their nature.

The Supermoto SX has a fitting 17-inch device. The first Cheng Shin Tire tires initially spread skepticism in the paddock. But the CST slippers offer good grip, both dry and wet. Adequate enduro equipment on the Aprilia RX 125. 21 inches at the front, 18 inches at the rear. The studded tires also come from Xiamen. Their message: keep going where others turn around. But there is no advantage without a disadvantage: on the road, the CST studs only offer mediocre, loud performance. And when it is wet, caution is advised even with 15 HP. There are other differences in the brakes. The Aprilia SX 125 relies on perforated brake discs, 300 mm at the front and 240 at the rear. The Enduro anchors using a combination of 260 and 240 wave discs. During emergency braking, both motorcycles rely on ABS, but only at the front. According to Aprilia, braking attempts with additional ABS acting at the rear would not have brought any advantage. At least one can get over the fact that the system cannot be switched off. Braking drifts and shock-free braking on gravel are no problem.
Suitable for everyday use, very handy and stable
Another three-letter safety feature: RLM, spelled out Rear Lift-up Mitigation. The system is intended to prevent the rear wheel from lifting off. In practice, this did not always work, and if you grab hold of it in a flash, the stern can take off from time to time. Much more important than the take-off and landing abilities, however, is the ease of cornering of the light motorcycles. What they lack in performance, the entry-level bikes can compensate for in the twisty terrain. The narrower the streets, the better. With a full tank, each motorcycle weighs just 134 kg. Because of its 17-inch wheels, the Supermoto steers in even more jaggedly than its coarse sister. Their large spoked wheels do their job on unpaved terrain.
Aprilia
Long suspension travel and handy 17-inch wheels result in almost unlimited freedom of lean angle.
However, both motorcycles are suitable for everyday use, very handy and stable. Up to the top speed of a good 110 things. Depending on the gradient and tail wind. This can be read on the small LC display, which lights up in a pleasant orange when it is dark. In addition to speed, trip master and time, it also keeps the cooling water temperature ready. There is no rev counter or gear indicator, not even at the push of a button. In Italian, comfort is capitalized and the Aprilias are no exception. Perhaps the first hurdle is the seat height of 880 (Aprilia SX 125) or 905 mm (Aprilia RX 125). But that’s not all: after just an hour, the seat becomes a penalty box. But maybe that’s just a matter of getting used to. The two do not require any more familiarization. Because brisk driving fun quickly sets in with the unequal twins. Especially since, with prices of less than 4,000 euros, they are also a real price-performance tip in this segment.
