Aprilia’s limited super sports car

Aprilia proved with RSV mille in 1998 that they could keep up with the strong competition from Japan in the sports segment. A year later, the manufacturer from Noale also brought a limited special edition of the successful model – the driving report from MOTORRAD 17/1999 and the most beautiful pictures of the Aprilia RSV mille SP from the slide archive.

At first, skepticism prevailed. Can a very good basic motorcycle like that, already blessed as an affordable mass product with extremely sporty talents A.prilia RSV mille experienced an increase in value and performance through noble and expensive modifications, which justifies a price of 60,000 marks?

A skepticism that does not go away at the first eye contact – the Aprilia RSV mille SP is standing a little bored on a podium next to the speaker’s lectern. Sure, an elegant, high-quality piece, this basic version for the Superbike World Championship. But it also bears the somewhat cool nimbus of the standard mille, which makes one and the other a bit inconspicuous.

Outwardly unspectacular, inwardly incomparably more potent

The Aprilia managers confidently assure exclusivity and value retention, because definitely no more than 150 Mille SP will be produced, and above all it has inner values that not only explain the price, but also the Aprilia RSV mille SP about others Let noble bikes stand out. Outwardly unspectacular, inwardly incomparably more potent, incomparably different.

There is the engine, for example, which is basically similar to that of the standard Mille, but has actually been thoroughly modified. All around there are changed intake routes, a newly programmed engine management system and a fresh exhaust system – with a mono silencer for the road (125 hp) or, as we did in the test on the GP circuit in Mugello, with a nice-sounding, stylish titanium double silencer plus included in the price Eprom for the racetrack (146 hp, V-twin record!). Commendable: like the series RSV, the Aprilia RSV mille SP also meets the EURO 1 emissions standard without a catalytic converter. The chassis also underwent significant changes, which in this form should even meet professional requirements. Several lightweight components – many carbon fiber shells, high-strength titanium screws on brake calipers and triple clamps – round off the classy package.

An effort that is worthwhile

So a lot of effort, but an effort that is worthwhile. Not only that the Aprilia RSV Mille SP with the open double pipe system achieves performance that does not make 146 HP appear completely unrealistic. It is spectacular how gentle, how elastic, how evenly and yet emphatically – in short: how controllable – the engine releases its pressure. It runs silky smooth compared to the series. No chain slap, never rough, only minimal vibrations, velvety load changes, a pleasure to accelerate through the excellent gear.

Just as impressive is how safely the chassis of the Aprilia RSV mille SP brings this performance to the road. Rip open the gas ever more cheeky in ever deeper lean angles, no problem. The Italians seem to have done their homework in terms of swing kinematics, because the mechanical grip on the rear tire – a Pirelli Dragon Evo Corsa that has been specially developed for the Aprilia and works well – is unparalleled with or without acceleration load.

Modified Brembo brakes on the Aprilia RSV mille SP are convincing

Certainly also a merit of the excellent, very tight Ohlins shock absorber, which, in conjunction with the fork from the same company, smooths the asphalt even in great inclines, when the fairing keel is touching. Steering properties and front wheel guidance are also convincing, concerns about the front tire with a 65 mm cross-section quickly give way to the sheer pleasure of driving. Handy in every possible situation – be it when turning slowly or when changing lean angles in quick alternating curves – extremely accurate, immune to road influences and load changes when leaning. Even the otherwise scolded Brembo brake, modified on the Aprilia RSV mille SP, is convincing, especially since the pneumatically assisted clutch effectively prevents rear wheel punches. The chassis reacts extremely precisely to every drive command and provides impeccable feedback on the driving status. Conducting the Aprilia is so easy, so spectacularly unspectacular.

Well, when braking hard, the Aprilia RSV mille SP already indicates a lurching, when accelerating hard over bumps it twitches very slightly with the steering-damped handlebar. And does it matter? It doesn’t matter at all. Bringing this chassis into real trouble is left to the Goddards of this world or to capital driving errors. And now? Skepticism? No more trace of it. Perhaps skepticism as to whether my account will ever allow me to invest 60 Mille in such a dream.

Engine and chassis

Aprilia asked for just under 60,000 euros for the limited special model.

The Aprilia RSV mille SP’s engine, carefully assembled by a master craftsman, differs from its standard counterpart in many ways. A shorter stroke (63.4 instead of 67.5 millimeters) allows higher speeds, the bore grows accordingly, so the SP shows the most extreme bore-stroke ratio among the liter V-twin cylinders. The crankshaft drive, which must have a new crankshaft, is carefully balanced. Extreme slipper pistons oscillate in the cylinders with a very low compression height, forged from a particularly resistant, silicon-containing aluminum alloy. The cylinder walls, in turn, have an electrolyte layer for the purpose of optimized heat dissipation and minimized friction. In addition, the cylinder and water jacket are not only cast together at the bottom but also at the top in a so-called “closed deck” construction, which increases the rigidity and reduces the cylinder’s vibrations.

Sand-cast, completely redesigned cylinder heads with milled combustion chambers, the profile of which was developed in lengthy series of tests and calculations at Cosworth in England, show a valve angle that has been reduced for loss-free filling and the switch from double to single ignition using a central spark plug. Its seat – a sensitive heat nest in every four-valve combustion chamber – is washed around by the cooling water. In the Aprilia RSV mille SP’s new engine, too, an additional balancer shaft rotates between the camshafts of the rear cylinder head.

Suspension of the Aprilia RSV mille SP

The chassis of the Aprilia RSV mille SP offers all the prerequisites to cope with the performance of a superbike and the hard driving style at World Championship level. The frame is another 20 percent more torsion-resistant than its standard counterpart (record according to Aprilia), and the swing arm has also been reinforced. Compared to the series, the SP was about five kilograms lighter and a little more front-heavy, the masses are even closer to the vehicle’s center of gravity.

A wide range of adjustment options – vertical motor position plus / minus four millimeters, swing arm pivot height plus / minus four millimeters, steering head angle plus / minus one degree, caster correspondingly shorter or longer – allow the Aprilia RSV mille SP to be adapted to the character of the route and the pilot’s driving style Spring rate and damping tight Ohlins components – fork with hard-coated dip tubes, shock absorber and steering damper – ensure that the wheels are safely guided on the asphalt. The progression of the strut redirection has been slightly reduced. The Brembo brake system benefits from a minimally reduced mechanical transmission on the hand lever and revised rubber seals on the brake pistons.
